Are you for or against Valentine´s Day?

I am biased on this for the moment because I don´t have a special someone, but also relieved that I don´t have to shop for a gift that shows my love for anyone.

I don´t like going out on that night because every place is crowded and it´s just another hallmark holiday. Every day could be Valentine´s day! Oh well...

So what do you think? How do you celebrate it? Are you a shopper for all kind of balloons, stuffed animals, chocolates, flowers, etc?

I´m adding a poll, not a very good one, I know... and I voted for "depends" because it´s a reason for my friends and I to see each other (not on that specific day), but we don´t exchange gifts anymore.

Happy Valentine´s Day! :lookaroun

 :animwink:

Yeah,...I'm with you on this one.

It's pretty much my style to go nuts with stuff like this. Spending lots of money on all the "trimmings" so to speak....and get all "sentimental" with this stuff.

I'm such a hopelees romantic about these things. But I find myself in the same boat you are in.

Who knows,...maybe next year???

You left out the "Valentines Day sucks" option. lol

Seeing that option wasn't available I voted that it depends on my mood.

(Some of you know this story already)

5 years ago I went out with my friend April and some other people for "Black Saturday" (Valentine's Day).

I hated guys (sorry) and was pretty much done with them, having just rescued myself from a very bad situation. To top it off, that particular situation had begun 3 Valentine's Days earlier. Cupid was my sworn enemy  I had become very bitter and very withdrawn and afraid and very unlike myself.

And in comes April's cousin with a dozen long-stemmed red roses.

We've now been married 2 1/2 years and I still can't believe my good luck.

So Valentine's Day is a birthday of sorts for me. Just when I was all psyched and ready to become an independant woman- LOL- I guess that shows that sometimes things don't happen the way you plan them.

If you're single I know sometimes Valentine's Day can be a pain in the *ss. Go out with your friends and have a good time. You don't need to be in love to be happy. And a good friend is ALWAYS better than a bad romance!

Oh really? It´s not my style though... hehe :animwink:

I don´t like buying useless expensive things to show my love for someone. I, in fact, don´t like those. The only things I like to get are jewels (who hates them?), clothes and accesories and flowers. The rest of the stuff like stuffed animals and balloons and stuff like that, I think that are just a waste of money. Cards are always nice to get, but if someone wants to spend money on me, he better give it to me in cash and I will make a better use of it and probably in something for both of us! :D

I´m not a grinch on this too, but it´s just how I see it. :animwink:

Well I am of course bitter because I never have anyone to celebrate Valentines day with. But I really dislike it because it's so material. You don't show love with presents.

And what in the hell is the point of having a day to show how much you love and care for someone. That should be every day IMO.

Yeah- balloons and stuffed animals are ok but once I reached a certain age I just didn't want that stuff anymore. John has learned that it's easiest just to take me to the mall

For Valentine's day though we don't do gifts. He has roses sent to me at work (kind of commemorative, lol) and that's it.

How do you feel about Christmas and birthdays? Same thing, or different?

I knew someone would say that. lol

And I do feel the same. I mean my mom has always spoiled me rotten but I've never been one to ask for things.

I buy a card, but valentines day is just a load of ________ if you ask me.

Birthdays and christmas are very different though.

I agree! My thoughts exactly. :)

Flowers will always be good, but I hate how the price of them raise for the month of February... poor guys sending them! :D

LOL I'm like you Josh- I just don't like asking for things. It drives John crazy because he loves to give things to people- anybody- not just me. He's just that way.

He is also not one to chase after girls, and Valentine's Day gave him an excuse to take a chance that he might not have otherwise taken. He never took that chance with anyone else and I am grateful that he did this one time.

Edit- Also- I know that "every day should be Valentines Day" but the reality its, it's not. People are busy with work, school, kids, etc and it is easy to forget about the small things. Same thing with Mother's Day and Father's Day. Hallmark holidays, yes- but still reminders to tell those we love how we feel about them, as well as an excuse to shove everything else out of the way iof even just for a day.

The onus is very much on the man though.

He is expected to buy flowers and take her out for a meal.

Sod that, tell her you'll split the bill 50-50.

Well, first of all, I should say that we celebrate Valentine's Day on June 12th. Don't ask me why, I have no idea, it just is. Actually, it's probably because our couple's patron is St. Anthony, and his month is June so...

Anyways, when I didn't have Julia, I used to send a card to my best (girl) friend and I'd buy or make a little something for whoever I had a thing for. Nowadays, I try to get Julia something that means something to our relationship. For example, Lady & the Tramp became our movie, so on our first Valentine's I got her both Lady and Tramp plushes, the big ones. She hates teddys and stuff, but because it had a special meaning, she loved them! :D
It's been like this for 3 years now. WHat can I say, I'm a sucker for romance, and I like giving gifts so it makes a perfect match to me.

I use to think it's just a Hallmark holiday, but I'm a little more possitive about it this year. At this point I'm going to use it as a time to spreed some kindness into the world insteed of seeing it as a way to sell cards, flowers, and candy. Now that I think about it, it sounds like I've turned into Polyanna! Who knew.

Until this year, i've always been V-day-less, so I was against the it. This year, i have a v-day boy, and still think it's stufpid. He has to be out of town that weekend for his sister's dance team. I think we agreed on flowers. We instead are celebrating 6 months. (Febuary 6th) Seems less stupid. LOL
