Updated TSMM On the Way?

That's what I've heard from two 'semi' reliable sources. And since another online site has mentioned it in passing as well, I'll toss it out too.

The story says TSMM will be 'updated and changed' to reflect the opening of Toy Story 3.

It's certainly possible. And Christmas and Halloween versions have been in the pipeline.

The only caveat here is Disney often touts technology that can easily be changed (see Star Tours). And it never is.

Yet on the flip side ToT has had a lot of changes. I think ST wasn't updated was due to Lucas/Eisner feuds and problems. But I understand where you are coming from here.

Lets hope we see some updates...

Yea, I remember reading something about that a while back.

I hope it's true because a lot of these new characters look terribly interesting (peas in a pod! rofl)

probably the easiest attraction to change/upgrade....they should be! i'd love to see crazy mashups of characters with this game.

It wouldn't seem to be too difficult to add the new characters to the attraction. But, if they're upgrading the overall technology, that could be a different story....

Toy Story definitely has ways to introduce new life into an attraction. Adding new games and attractions will be easy. There probably would be no downtime for a refurb to introduce the new items.

Any proposed dates for said overlays? I'm heading down there in June pretty close to the TS3 opening. Any chance they'll have them in by then?

I think I read something like that around these parts not long ago. TSMM is an easily updatable ride, so I can definitely see that happening.

Holy cow. What difference would it make? The content of the simplistic games contained within the ride has little real connection to the films. Would someone actually enjoy a virtual ring toss game more if there was some new reference to the third film contained therein?

It depends. Hopefully an overlay would contain new games that reflect the personalities of the new characters, just as the current games more or less reflect the characters from the first two movies.

I think the excitement surrounding this is moreso the fact that the ride can be changed for seasonal overlays and that TDO may actually be doing something to a ride to make different experiences. Will the games be the same? More than likely, but the fact that they are willing put new overlays in to keep it fresh is a welcome idea and another small step into making WDW better.

If DL was getting these overlays and WDW wasn't everyone would probably freak out. So take it for what it is... slight changes to an already entertaining ride to KEEP it attractive to guests. Instead of allowing it to decay into what some other rides have.

Jim Hill mentioned Lotso the Bear and Stretch the Octopus to host games, and they would premier with the Tokyo version of the ride.

You didn't hear it from me: But don't be surprised if Midway Mania is closed for a few days in April.

It's not for anything creative like adding Toy Story 3 most likely, but still. Keep an ear out for news.

I still don't get it. The games involve throwing things at targets, which get popped, or knocked down, or get a ring on them. We're talking about games that would seem unsophisticated if they appeared on a ten-year old cell phone. You're telling me that they reflect the personalities of the characters in the films? They have all the personality of a paper cup. I guess what I'm getting at is, even if they completely changed out all the games, it's still just going to be target practice.

Yeah, but look, I understand why some people wish that WDW could get the Haunted Mansion overlay for Christmas. That turns the Disneyland version into a very different ride, with different characters, different settings, and so on. But it hardly seems worth it to make a new version of a TSM game such that I'm throwing bean bags at ghosts or something like that for Halloween. I mean, if you're already tired of pulling that string and knocking junk down -- and as you may have guessed, I was, even after the first ride -- differently themed versions of the same thing aren't going to make a difference.
