Universal to Invest $1.5 Billion in Orlando Resort

Good, Disney finally has a competitor. Disney can finally wake up and try and compete with that. But it will have to be after New Fantasyland officially opens. Hopefully Carsland, Avatarland, and DHS expansion.

1. HP dropped into their laps!? They had to bite, scratch, and claw with JK Rowling to build WWoHP.

2. I don't think for a second that Uni is trying to beat Disney at anything. Granted they are both theme/amusement parks but personally I think that's where the similarities end. Uni is in the theme park business and Disney is in the memories business.

3. I say god for Uni for doing what they are and have been doing. They have a product now (Harry Potter) that they know is marketable on numerous levels and they are taking full advantage of it.

And you really shouldn't judge WWoHP without having been to it. The moment you walk under the arches any thought of Disney is gone from your brain. Sadly, when you walk back out it hits you how much worse off the rest of the park is.

Well the way people are acting on here, it seems like WWoHP came out of nowhere and everyone is scared of it. I think Disney knows well that once people get bored with the rest of Universal, they end up at the gates with much more offerings.

And that is kind of my point, two complete different vibes between Disney and Uni. Whether it for an extended stay or just swinging by for the afternoon (when I lived close by), CMs have always made me feel special while at Universal, I got a "churn 'em and burn 'em vibe" getting me in and out of the rides and attractions. Universal is just a theme park while Disney is a whole lot more for a whole lotta people. And I agree, I'm glad Universal knows what to do with their new product but I don't think it's something to be afraid of.

Finally, I'm not judging WWoHP, I want to see it! I know it'll be amazing and I am excited about my next trip to Orlando... I just wished it wasn't at Universal because I can't stand the park as a whole. And I know once I'm back out of WWoHP I'll be like "Oh, right, this place..."

Good for them.

Sorry, not to sound smarmy (and I have been holding my tongue about this for a while) BUT: how long has Universal been in Orlando and they're just now sinking money hand over fist into the parks? I am glad they are, and everything looks good but WDW has been kicking their butts for years until Harry Potter dropped into their laps.

You answered your own question lol Universal didn't draw in as many visitors as WDW does and as Universal was doing ok the company didn't invest much in to it but when Harry Potter opened, Universal's market share rose dramatically while WDW's declined. This made Universal realize that they had something special so in order to capitalize on this they are doing everything they can to make the parks as good as possible in order to attract repeat custom and draw in new guests and steal more market share from Disney. Unless Disney unveils something dramatic soon Universal will certainly over take them.

This is Disney's problem. As much as I love WDW, it is becoming very stale and needs a dramatic change and update. Universal is changing and adding new stuff all the time and this is attracting custom whereas Disney isn't doing this as much.

That may be true, I just don't think we need to go looking for the lifeboats just yet. There are still people, like me, that will go to Universal once, seeing WWoHP and then taking my happy little butt back down the road to my second home. I do think some of the parks at WDW need some additions, but that is purely from a posterity aspect.

I feel you're missing out. Should at least give it a go.

There's lots of cool places in this world I haven't been. My vacation days are a finite resource, and my time at WDW is always shorter than I'd like. If I had an extra day in Orlando it'd be spent at WDW.

Where Universal Orlando Resort was about five years ago is exactly where Walt Disney World was headed. While I think the legal organization of the ownership structure of Universal City Development Partners played so role, I think most also acknowledge that there was a serious amount of complacency amongst the Resort's owners. They were comfortable in their position and so they saw no reason to invest, to try. The result was slumped attendance, poor guest spending and a Resort that was visibly becoming stale and neglected. That is exactly what has been happening at Walt Disney World. Attendance has been held at just over flat by discounts and free dining, but guest spending remains abysmal.

I'm unsure if you were aware but Disney had the inside track to Harry Potter (just imagine WWOHP at DHS and DCA!) but let it go because of "creative differences" with J.K. Rowling. Basically, Disney wanted to do WWOHP "on the cheap" while Rowling wanted to retain creative control which effectively would have given her control over the budget. TWDC's decision to pass on WWOHP might have single-handedly saved Universal Orlando.

Fair enough but as they say, don't knock it until you've tried it.

I know. And it has kind of put Universal on the map. Growing up in Central Florida, Universal usually wasn't a "hey let's go there!" at least, for me and my family and friends. And I think it would have been great in one of the Disney parks, especially DHS, even if I feel it doesn't fit... If I could have my way, WWoHP would be it's own thing at not at Universal so then I don't have to pay the price of admission for one place haha anyway, I still think that people need to not worry so much about it and enjoy Disney. Corporate structures change, and there will always be a WDW. Seriously, if New Fantasyland is the signs of what to expect for the future parks, then I am not worried at all...especially when the WWoHP novelty wears off.

I'd have to disagree, as beautiful as it is, I am very underwhelmed for reasons I have posted several times so I'm not going to repeat myself :p

Each to his own opinions I guess. I grew up going to MK on a regular basis and Fantasyland always was the underwhelming part of the park for me. Now, in my mid-twenties, I find myself really liking the New Fantasyland and can't wait to visit just for that!

'cannot imagine a situation where I'd ever set foot in a Universal park.' <- Here

I can't imagine a situation where I'd ever set foot in Australia either, but it's my dream vacation. I never knocked Universal. It very well could be the best park in the world, and I could not care less. As I said, when I'm in Orlando, I do not have enough days to do WDW they way I'd like. If I had an extra day it would be spent at WDW. The trip before last I didn't even make it to all the WDW parks.

If I were to strike it rich, and not have to worry about work, maybe then I'd check out Universal (But I'd go to Australia first ;))
