Universal Epic Universe (South Expansion Complex) - Now Open!

Must say that I find it very weird there seems to be an account on X dedicated entirely to criticising Epic Universe.

Welcome to the internet Sir_Cliff. I see it's your first day here so a few helpful reminders:

• Google is a search engine, not the internet itself.
• If you get an email stating you won a free pair of Nikes courtesy of Microsoft and Bill Gates, that's probably a lie.
• People on Reddit are not your friends.
• If you see a popup in your browsers saying your computer has a virus and you should download software from a link in that popup to clean your computer, do not click the link. You don't have a virus but you will if you click it.

There will be other things you learn as you explore but with these handy tips, you should be well on your way to blazing your own path across the information super highway!

I think that was covered when he mentioned it was built to Universal standards. And Uni had the opportunity to inspect the coaster before opening and regularly. And after the death, Uni said the coaster operated correctly according to their standards.

If the family or government go after Mack, Mack has an airtight "It wasn't me - Universal said so" case.

Nah - uni has requirements, but its still a mack coaster. Operator vs manufacturer

Went back to Epic last week, man the park is not aging super well :/

Even in the time since I last went (not long ago) chipped paint, water spots, cracking sidewalks in multiple places :(

Afraid to see what happens in the next few years if its having these issues within 5 months and not properly maintained.
Were you there at night? I also noticed quite a bit of the in-ground lighting was broken on my visit in early October.

I've only really noticed this stuff in Celestial Park, but yeah it already looks 10 years old. I get the impression they cheaped out on materials for Celestial Park.

Okay yeah it's actually not hyperbole... it's really bad. Literally every few feet throughout ALL of Celestial Park, the concrete is busted and hastily patched with a non-matching color. It's actually concerning.

A good comparison I can think of is the Disney Springs makeover, which is nearing 10 years old but still looks brand new. How the heck does Celestial Park already look so beat up??

I don’t understand how this happens so quickly in a climate that doesn’t have a freeze/thaw cycle. They got ripped off by a subcontractor who cut corners or something? It doesn’t really make sense.

This is bad. It seems both Universal and Disney are getting bad work done by their subcontractors.

I question the knowledge of todays subcontractors compared to the old days.

In my opinion, while the subcontractors were the ones doing the bad work, I blame both Universal and Disney for not constantly overseeing and inspecting and correcting the work as it’s being done.

I didn't remember seeing pavement issues when I went to Epic on September 18th, September 19th, September 21st, and September 23rd.

The issues I had to deal with was ride related. I waited a long time for Mario Kart while it broke down when I was in line and Battle of Ministry of Magic had an issue while I was on the ride.

I also had Mario Kart with with the power up band. I wasn't able to scan the power up band on the ride vehicle.

I didn't take pictures of it myself because thats not really something I do, but there are pictures on twitter further up showing off some of the problems. It's definitely mostly around Celestial park as well..

For a brand new park, this does look really bad but funny how its not being talked about at all compared to another park themed middle section of a Florida park that was just built that also struggles with upkeep (but not like this)

Not sure if anyone else noticed, there used to be multiple moving fountains in the center during the night show and only one moves now, the rest have been turned off for 3-4 months now.

there's definitely got to be a little more oversight to these issues. I wonder if its a mix of these companies rushing each other to get stuff done, budget not being there, or if they are sharing contractors maybe the contractors have stopped caring because they already have the next 10 jobs lined up at the competition so just get this done and you can move onto the next???

Whatever it is, this should not be the trend. Epcot's center isn't horrible to me (I know other opinions vary) but the inground lighting disaster is particularly shocking to me because they've had the inground lighting thing before and its held up for YEARS longer than this.

Like a previous commenter said, many other parts of WDW AND Universal still are holding up GREAT after years of use but these two spots are quickly deteriorating. I'm hoping that BOTH companies are giving these contractors a stern talking to about happened as well as updating oversight to actually make sure this is actually getting done right.

I prefer theme park lands to have an intentional patina to them (like Disneyland's Adventureland or Big Thunder Mountain) where there is distress and rust and cracks and crumbles to the concrete. That makes the real-world aging less noticeable.

Celestial Park seems like a perfect land for an intentional patina, so maybe they can come in with concrete stains and do scenic-paint patina touchups to the lamp bases (I noticed in some POV videos they were looking beat-up right after the park opened) to make distress part of the look.

Specifically, with concrete, these parks spend money pouring these nice, expansive concrete walkways and then almost immediately come in and saw rectangles into them and dig them up to tinker with water lines, etc. These parks know they'll do this...so why not incorporate that into the aesthetic? In the steampunk-ish look of Celestial Park, these rectangle patches could be intentionally given a different color and finish (a raked/grooved look, say) and made to look like a panel or metal plate. They could even add embossed brass or painted stenciled text ("HYDRO FLOW CHAMBER") to add mystery and intrigue and deepen the theming.

I'm thinking of the Japanese philosophy of Kintsugi, most famously the use of powdered gold in the lacquer used to mend pottery, but overall a philosophy of celebrating flaws and incorporating breakage as part of the aesthetic. I think there's an opportunity in Celestial Park to approach these issues in a creatively enlightened way.
