No more underwear-sharing at Disney

June 8, 2001

BY MIKE SCHNEIDER

ORLANDO, Fla.--After almost two months at the negotiating table, the workers who play characters such as Mickey Mouse and Cinderella at Walt Disney World have won an important concession: clean undergarments.

Under a tentative contract between Disney and the Teamsters union, the workers will be assigned individual undergarments, which they can take home each night to clean themselves instead of relying on Disney launderers.

"Things have been passed around," said Gary Steverson, a stilt walker at Animal Kingdom. "I know I don't want to share my tights, and I don't want to share my underwear."

Many of the characters have to wear Disney-issued jockstraps, tights or bike shorts underneath their costumes because regular underwear bunches up and is noticeable. Each night, they turn in the undergarments with the rest of their costume before going home. They then pick up a different set the next day.

Disney officials had told the workers they use hot water to clean the undergarments, but they apparently weren't doing so, said Steverson, a shop steward with the Teamsters, which represents workers who portray Disney characters.

Some workers complained about receiving undergarments that were stained or smelly. Steverson said there have been three cases of costumed workers at the Magic Kingdom getting pubic lice or scabies during the past two years.

Disney spokeswoman Rena Callahan refused to comment on the new contract provisions.

I saw that in the paper today and if it weren't so comical, it would be downright disgusting. Who would've thunk it?! Disney and uncleanliness mentioned in the same sentence? WOW! History has been made! ;)

YUCK!!! I read this article today in our local paper also. I can't believe that cast members had to share undergarments. I know times are a little tough but that is too exteme. Can you imagine being in those costumes in August? I give the cast members a great deal of credit for what they do and asking them to wear undergarments that someone else wore is just asking way too much.

Hey guys, please remember that WDW has been around for 30 years, with very few internal incidents that have gone out of control. This is a tribute to the philosophies and standards drawn up by Walt Disney himself.

But nothing is perfect, even Walt Disney (as much as we all wish he were:D ), so we shouldn't go off the deep end when something like this happens. We should, in a way, be glad it took this long to occur. I mean, the article said three cases of lice in two years. I've been to amusment parks where a good portion of their work force don't get fair breaks, low wages, and poor working conditions. They don't even have true unions! So we should be glad that the Teamsters Union caught this hiccup before it turned into an all-out epidemic. The other question that needs to be raised is who was the person infested with the lice in the first place? Shouldn't he have to pay a price?

All I'm saying is, if you guys really love WDW and Disney, than you should be able to put up with this. I think it's disgusting, yes, but I'm willing to forget about it and move on, in the knowledge that Disney is taking action to correct the problem. I hope you guys are too.

maniac, i love my wife, too. but if she was sharing her underwear with all her friends and everybody in her family, i don't think i could just put it out of mind.

how would you like it if your employer made you share your underwear with all your co-workers?

as wdw guests, we don't have to put up with it. it's the cast members who play head characters who do. i think it's revealing that the union had to NEGOTIATE with disney for TWO MONTHS to gain this concession.

knowing this doesn't diminish my enthusiasm for disney. and it's not going to make me cancel my next vacation there. but i don't think it's "going overboard" to recognize the irony that a company that prides itself on cleanliness made its employees share underwear.

what it does do is make me appreciate the people who play the head characters a little more. i mean, you have got to be the ultimate disney fanatic to do that job, which entails wearing a heavy costume in stifling heat while getting jostled by thousands of children. and doing so with enthusiasm.

I read that these Disney issue "undergarments" were to be worn over the cast member's own undergarments but that many cast members did not want to do that since they get bunched up or uncomfortable which makes sense.

Maybe I am wrong, but I think that what they are referring to as "underwear" are actually shorts and t-shirts. That is what I saw them wearing with the inventory tags and numbers. Black shorts and white t-shirts. If someone wore the shorts as boxers... yuck! I understand they wanted to make sure they are totally clean and therefore would be a lot better if each one cleans their own. I would have done that myself without even asking for permission! Just scan an extra pair and take the old one home. ;)

How do you guys get the picture to appear under your names?

Go into USERCP (top right of screen), then goto Edit Options, then all the way down to the bottom, and you will see the options for AVATARS. This puts the picture to the left hand side. :)
