(Note: When I posted this originally I didn't see that the article was old. However the information still is quite applicable as this situation still is happening. Also of interest, this article states that performers were given the right to take costume pieces home yet the majority of people still leave their stuff at thier workplace. I guess they are not so concerned anymore.)
OK, as a "friend" of a character I read this and was thinking WHAT? I have worked in this department for over 2 years and have never heard of anyone sharing underwear.
What they are talking about is the fact that some roles require the use of special items such as tights or jock straps or other garments. However it is company policy (which they tell you on the first day of training) that all persons should be wearing the appropriate undergarments under all costume pieces. That means that everyone is required to wear their own underwear under the pieces.
Costuming does send all garments to the wash after use. So it is not their fault.
And it is not like we sit in the locker room with each other saying, "Hey, Bill, I am done with these boxers, you can have them for tommorrow."
Also each person is required to wear "basics" which are grey tees and black shorts under their costumes when applicable. Some people do use the basics as their underwear (which I find disgusting) and they are the very minority.
So this article is completely blowing things out of proportion. It is a very rare occurance for anyone to get a disease from the garments they wear. But I have to reiderate that the company requires all castmembers to wear their own underwear. It is just those few individuals that don't want to follow the rules that bring stuff like this to the forefront.
