Typhoon Lagoon Surf Lessons!

I hope this is the right place to post this. I had asked about the surf lessons at Typhoon Lagoon and since we've come back from it, I decided to post a report. I booked the lessons back in February when we booked the Disney trip. I had 2 16 year old girls that wanted to learn how to surf and I thought it might be fun!
The cost was $150.00 per student. At first I thought it was typical Disney expensive, but after going I take it back. The classes are small, only 10 to 12 students. For the price of admission you get 2 experienced surf instructors from Craig Carroll's Cocoa Beach Surfing School, who is contracted to give the classes, all the necessary equipment, and Typhoon Lagoon all to yourself for almost 3 hours.

Fast Forward to 6-23-11:
You need to have a car, or take a cab, because Disney transportation isn't running at 5:45 am when you need to be at the entrance to the park. You've already provided a credit card number to hold the reservation. Now is when you pay for the lessons, and are escorted into the park. We got to the wave pool, and everything was laid out. There were two instructors who explained the equipment and safety. 90% of all surfing injuries are as a result of the board striking the surfer during a wipeout. "Soft Boards" are used to prevent injuries. They use 8' 9' and 10' surfboards. Surprisingly, the longer boards are easier to control by those just learning.

The instructors demonstrate the proper way to lay on the board, paddle, and jump up to a standing position.

Then each student took turns on the beach:

Incidentally, you don't need a ticket to get in, either the students or the watchers/photographers. ;)

The wave pool begins as a canyon with high walls that concentrate the water towards the mouth of the pool. Then it shallows out and is fan shaped till it hits the beach. Others may have the exact dimensions, but I would estimate the canyon to be maybe 200' long(?) before it exits. That is the primary surf area. There is a rope crossing the canyon with hanging flags at the exit of the canyon. This is where the surfers are supposed to terminate their ride because the pool is shallowing out quickly.

If I recall correctly, the pool is 9' deep right at the wall where the wave water is released. About 30' from the wall it's down to 6'. It begins to shallow slowly till the mouth of the channel/wall opens up to the main area of the wave pool. Then it begins to shallow out quickly. For safety there is a Disney Lifeguard on the chair above the wave pool, and one in the water where the wave empties out into the main pool area.
First one instructor is floating in the pool between the wave generator, and where the wave begins to build and rise. He pushes the surfer into the wave just as it begins to build. After everyone gets a couple of trips, and the second instructor monitors from the top of the bulkhead, she gets into the water so that the surfers can go two at a time.

There is a stairway that runs from the top of the bulkhead to about the area where the waves begin to break. The students toss their boards into the water, then swim to the board and hop on.

At first they practiced maneuvering the boards.

They had to paddle their boards to the beach once for practice. Oh yeah, The trip back was by foot power!

Awesome! This is right on time, I just booked this for my husband as a surprise! I'm glad you think the cost is justified!

Are there any Photopass photographers there taking pictures during the lesson?

Surf's UP!

The wave machine generates three waves at a time. The first is approx. 8' high, the second two approx. 4' and 2' high. There is about 90 seconds between waves.
The instructors push the surfers into the waves as they go by. This is to maximize the number of rides, since it's possible that the wave could go by without you. You get a little bit down range and you're too far to paddle back to the starting point. Also, if you miss a wave and need to come back, you screw up the timing for the person who is supposed to be behind you. Each set of waves has two surfers at a time heading downstream. Once the instructor pushes you off, you're on your own.
They start you off on one of the two smaller waves until they see you can stand up. Then they let you go on the big one. The only down side to the system that I saw was that once both instructors were in the water, they couldn't see what you were doing wrong and correct the problem. When they pushed you off, their view was obstructed by the wave.
It was a quick process. Everybody seemed to do really well, and fun was had by all!

When it was over, photo op with the instructors, and a nice certificate.

Everyone had to leave when the park opened at 9:00 and were escorted out by lifeguards, albeit in a very nice, unobtrusive, Disneylike way. :D
You had to do a turnaround at the gate with a ticket/pass if you wanted to come back in for the day.

Hope I didn't forget anything. Please feel free to ask if you have any questions, or I missed something and I'll do my best to answer.
Lots of fun and highly recommended!

No, unfortunately the photos and movies are the do -it-yourself kind!
