I hope this is the right place to post this. I had asked about the surf lessons at Typhoon Lagoon and since we've come back from it, I decided to post a report. I booked the lessons back in February when we booked the Disney trip. I had 2 16 year old girls that wanted to learn how to surf and I thought it might be fun!
The cost was $150.00 per student. At first I thought it was typical Disney expensive, but after going I take it back. The classes are small, only 10 to 12 students. For the price of admission you get 2 experienced surf instructors from Craig Carroll's Cocoa Beach Surfing School, who is contracted to give the classes, all the necessary equipment, and Typhoon Lagoon all to yourself for almost 3 hours.
Fast Forward to 6-23-11:
You need to have a car, or take a cab, because Disney transportation isn't running at 5:45 am when you need to be at the entrance to the park. You've already provided a credit card number to hold the reservation. Now is when you pay for the lessons, and are escorted into the park. We got to the wave pool, and everything was laid out. There were two instructors who explained the equipment and safety. 90% of all surfing injuries are as a result of the board striking the surfer during a wipeout. "Soft Boards" are used to prevent injuries. They use 8' 9' and 10' surfboards. Surprisingly, the longer boards are easier to control by those just learning.
The instructors demonstrate the proper way to lay on the board, paddle, and jump up to a standing position.
Then each student took turns on the beach:
Colleen and Katie, our students for today's class!
