Two weeks with two teen boys: Bayoutinkbelle's TR with photos and video!

I spent two weeks at Pop (June 28-July 11) with my 15-year-old son, D.J., and his friend Curtis, 14. My son and I have visited WDW repeatedly, but this was Curtis' first visit. We did non-WDW first - two days at Universal, one at Seaworld and one at Discovery Cove - before plunging into Disney parks. I've included photos here, but I have more here. Here's a report on our trip:

June 28

Curtis' excitement level was going up the farther we drove off the turnpike down Western Way, but he exploded when he saw this:

Arrived at Pop and used the online check-in. I just gave my name and the CM went into the back and retrieved my info packet. Everything was ready for us, so he just went over our keys info and showed us where our building was and we were on our way. Since it was already evening, we decided to grab some dinner at the food court. I had the fettuccine alfredo with chicken, which was really good :slurp:. The boys had pizza, the first of many they ate from Pop's food court. We headed to our room, unpacked and then went to sleep so we could start early in the morning.

June 29-July 2

On these days, we did non-WDW stuff. On June 29-30, we visited Universal. I'm a passholder and Uni was having passholder specials through the 30th. I got killer deals on tickets for the boys, and for Blue Man Group tickets. Check out this video of Curtis riding Dr. Doom's Fearfall for the first time

The crowds at Universal were non-existent, which was a shocker for me. Really. On our first day, we walked into Richter's at noon for lunch and cruised right up to the counter - no waiting. It was like that during our entire lunch. Waits for lines were no more than 30 minutes, and most of the time were 10 minutes or less.

We attended a late BMG show on Thursday that had rows of empty seats. It was hard not to notice how the economy was hurting Uni's attendance.

Both nights, we ate dinners back at WDW - Boma on the 29th and Whispering Canyon (first time) on 30th. Both were excellent and definitely will revisit (in fact, already have an October ressie at Boma). I laughed when Curtis suggested to our server that the chefs at Boma use a certain type of milk in their macaroni-and-cheese. He's an expert on that, apparently. :D Really enjoyed the Canyon Skillet at Whispering Canyon, and it was perfect for the boys. Our server was a riot. We got to do the Hokey-Pokey, but didn't need to ask for ketchup. After dinner, we enjoyed the boat ride over to Fort Wilderness and then to Contemporary. We hit it at sunset, so it was beautiful.

On July 1, we went to Seaworld "free" since that's what I chose when I bought our Discovery Cove tickets ("free" as in I paid more than enough to get into Discovery Cove). Seaworld was a little more crowded, but certainly not bad. Curtis and I were itching to try Manta, which did not disappoint. An absolutely fantastic coaster! One of the best queues ever, which made our 30-40-minute wait seem like nothing at all. The adjoining aquarium was very nice, too, especially the display for the rays.

And, on July 2, we spent the day at Discovery Cove. A very nice relaxing day, especially since the boys spent most of their time floating on the lazy river. I joined them at times, but I also spent some time roaming around the park to shoot photos and relishing some quiet time near the back of the park, just relaxing on a beach lounger. That night, we saw BMG. Darn fantastic day!

July 3

We split today between Epcot and Magic Kingdom. First, we went to Epcot and, after picking up the boys' tickets at Will Call, we headed to Spaceship Earth. It's a tradition, always the first thing to do inside the park. The park was not that crowded. We had a lunch ressie at Le Cellier, which was great as always. We spent time letting lunch settle inside The Seas, then caught the monorail over to Magic Kingdom. I forced the boys on Small World, and then laughed at them while they said I was torturing them. They were much more interested in riding Big Thunder, which is my son's favorite. We did that next. After many more rides in the Adventureland/Frontierland areas, we walked toward Liberty Tree for dinner. We came across two CMs who were making a giant Mickey with their mops and water. It drew a crowd and the CMs got lots of applause when they finished.

IMG_9998.jpg

After dinner, we headed for Splash with our FPs, but it was down for the rest of the night. We caught the Celebrate America! fireworks (video shot by D.J., which explains the shakiness :)) show from outside Big Thunder. Then we slowly made our way out of the park and back to the hotel.

July 4

Epcot all day. Crowds weren't too heavy earlier in the day, but it quickly changed as the day wore on. We had a great time. We spent time in Innoventions, which the boys really liked, and in The Land and The Seas. We walked up on the diver in the lock-out chamber, which was cool.

IMG_01892.jpg

Then we headed back to World Showcase and strolled around before staking out a spot for the fireworks. We ended up sitting outside Norway, which was a good spot. Later, Curtis and I walked all the way over to America and picked up three burgers, fries, dessert and drinks while D.J. held our spots. A nice picnic while waiting for the show, which was amazing. Everyone was enjoying themselves and being friendly, even on the very crowded walk out of the park.

We decided to catch the monorail over to Magic Kingdom and then get the bus back to Pop (don't know why, we just did). That went OK, and it wasn't until the next morning when I got a voicemail from a friend that I learned about the tragic accident. You could hear people talking about it all around the parks, but it was all pretty quiet and solemn.

July 5

We slept in a little and headed over to DHS mid-morning. First thing I noticed was no crowds at all. Still, Toy Story Mania ride was very popular. We grabbed FPs and then headed to Sci-fi for lunch. Burger, fries and a shake - the perfect meal! Curtis was amazed that I knew so much of the old movies. Many visits to Sci-fi combined with being a MST3K fan! After lunch, we hit the Great Movie Ride and then waited for awhile outside Toy Story to see Luxo Jr. - no luck.

IMG_0781.jpg

Later, we walked over to Sunset Boulevard. I was stunned to see only a 10-minute wait for ToT. We rode twice, then went over and rode RnR, which had a longer wait. Then it was ice cream time while we enjoyed the street performers.

IMG_0754.jpg

We took in the Muppets, Star Tours and ToT again before finally riding Toy Story. I loved it! It was my first ride on the attraction. After that, we headed over to the Contemporary for dinner at Chef Mickey's. Our ressie was for 9:45 p.m., so I'm not sure if it was because of the late hour or because I was tired, but I didn't really enjoy it. Our server wasn't the most attentive, so that contributed to it. We did get to witness a really cool event - a guy proposed to his girlfriend and she said yes. Everyone applauded, and the characters came out to congratulate them and pose for photos. Really sweet. Still, just outside was a sober reminder of what had happened the previous day - monorail yellow was parked inside the Contemporary. We walked over to MK and caught the bus back to Pop for a well-deserved night of rest.

Back to Epcot, where I experienced my very first evac from a ride! It was mid-afternoon and Curtis and I had been on M:S green. That was Curtis' test to see if he could handle orange, and he said that he chose to go. So we were on the ride, just about to land on Mars - when everything winks out. Ride over. The CMs handed everyone FPs as we walked out. So, we headed over to Soarin', which had a 75-minute wait and no FPs available. We decided to wait in line and we waited probably about 40-45 minutes. The boys had a good time with the new interactive games in the queue. I stood back so that they didn't slap me in their enthusiasm. After that, we headed to AK for EMH. We only rode EE and Dinosaur before heading back to grab dinner at the food court. Then we spent some time in the computer pool, which was right outside our building.

July 7

Back at AK. This time, I drove because we had 8:10 a.m. ressies at Donald's Safari Breakfast. The buffet is great, and the character interaction is good too. After breakfast and the safari, we went to Conservation Station, where we spent at least an hour. Vets were doing a procedure on a Key Largo wood rat, an endangered species. Characters were out, including Jiminy Cricket. After walking the animal trails, we hopped on Kali. Before the ride even began, we got soaked by a quick rainshower. So the ride was all good. We did the safari again, but the rain returned and we called it an early day.

Back to MK. Not long after we arrived, the boys headed over to Tom Sawyer Island, while I bounced around and rode Pirates and HM multiple times. I was adopted by a family on Pirates, very nice people and I wish I remembered their names. They noticed that I was alone and practically grabbed me into their line (they had enough family to take up three rows on the boat). The boys returned from the island at their appointed time and we squeezed Jungle Cruise in before going to dinner at Tony's. Our server was amazing. She was great with the kids and super fast. We all had spaghetti (of course!). I took our Le Cellier server's advice and ordered the ice cream bomb for dessert. Delicious, and Curtis kept talking about it for the rest of our trip.

IMG_1454.jpg

After dinner, I grabbed a spot on the hub for Wishes and the second Spectro show. The boys took off for 30 minutes while I waited, then we watched the shows. Great time!

Back to DHS. Rode Star Tours once, and then rounded back to ride again. Got into the queue only to run into a CM saying that we must "evacuate" the building. No idea what was going on, but if the ride just went down, is evacuate the best word to use? I'm thinking there's a fire when I hear that. Anyhoo, we decided to visit the Disney animation area because I've never been there before (bad me!). I really enjoyed it, strolling and looking at all the stuff on the new "Frog" film and all the characters. And seeing a poster that says they're working on a version of Rapunzel (really? I look forward to it, if true). Had to deal with more rain (actually a lot on this trip, but that's OK). Went back to Star Tours and the line was wrapped all through the extended queue, which I'd never seen before. Still, we didn't wait anymore than 30 minutes. Later, after playing with the rope outside the Indy stunt show, we headed to H&V for our Fantasmic dinner package meal. The food was good and we took our time eating because we were there so early (3:45 p.m.). By the time we finished, we just strolled over to Sunset and sat down to do some people watching and wait to enter the amphitheater. It was done differently from the last time I used this package. This time, we entered through the main entrance and met a CM at the amphitheater who took our ticket. In the past, we'd entered through a gate near Oscar's and - because we were early - were told we could sit anywhere. But, no biggie. We had great seats. The place was absolutely packed, but that was helped in no small part by at least five tour groups (most from Brazil, but I did see one from Argentina).

IMG_1902.jpg

IMG_1912.jpg

After the show, we left DHS via boat and went over to Epcot in search of something to eat because it was EMH there. If I had one complaint about EMHs, it would be that places close too early. Couldn't find anyplace to eat in World Showcase and this was an hour before closing. Finally, we stopped in at the Electric Umbrella for some burgers.

July 10

Back to MK and the boys took off for Tom Sawyer Island. They loved it; I'm not that thrilled by it. So I wandered over to Pirates to ride and wait for Captain Jack Sparrow to make his appearance. While waiting, I saw Peter Pan and Wendy stroll by. Jack was not bad, but he wasn't Johnny Depp either.

IMG_1984.jpg

After the boys returned and we rode more rides, we headed over to Epcot via monorail. We were at Epcot and almost to SSE when it started pouring, so we took our time on the ride and the Siemens area. It appeared that it would keep pouring, so we ran across to Innoventions and then through the character area (in through the out door, sorry), over to Club Cool. D.J. wanted to get some Beverly to take home so he could torture his cousins and a very nice CM told him that he shouldn't do it, but she would let it slide. He filled up an empty soda bottle that he had and - amazingly - the stuff stayed fresh (that's debatable, I know) until we returned home. Meanwhile, the rain finally let up so we could walk around to Germany and our ressies at Biergarten. We got caught by the Earth barge and other barges coming through at the drawbridge, which was cool to see.

IMG_2037.jpg

Once the bridge was down and gates were open, people yelled "charge!" and walked across. Does this happen every time the gates are opened because I've only seen it one other time and it happened then, too. Funny stuff. I enjoyed the buffet, as did my meat-loving son, but Curtis wasn't too impressed. He's a finicky eater. We shared a table with a couple celebrating their 26th anniversary and a family from Scotland (I believe that's right). After dinner, we strolled through a light rain and took some time at China to look at the water in the lily pads (gorgeous) and at the warriors exhibit.

IMG_2076.jpg

Then we headed over to Mexico and found a bench along the lake to sit and wait for Illuminations. D.J. decided to get a burrito and I wondered where the heck he was putting it since we just ate dinner. Just before the show, we could see lightening and hoped that the show would be OK. I was in a corner with my tripod, ready to take more pictures. A family stood behind us (spoke what sounded like Chinese) and I could tell the mother was scolding the little boy who stood close beside me (mothers can tell these things :D). I told her that he was fine where he was, and we all enjoyed the show.

IMG_21162.jpg

After the show was over, we headed back to Pop, where I strolled the grounds a little and snapped more photos. I was starting to get nostalgic since the next day was our last.

July 11

Started at AK with lunch at Flame Tree. Where is my cornbread muffin??!! Still irks me. We fought off all manner of birds while eating, but it was more funny than irritating. We strolled the animal trails and rode EE before leaving for MK. The weather really took a turn for the worse after awhile, so we headed back to Pop to pack up and get ready for the trip home. Ate dinner at the food court and the boys swam in the pool for the last time. I also was battling a sore throat by this time, so I went to bed early. The next day, we went to Downtown Disney for a little quick shopping before hitting the road. My sore throat turned into a two-and-a-half week battle that ended in bronchitis. What price vacation, eh?

That's it. Hope you enjoyed reading and the audio-visual aids. I'm gearing up for the adults-only trip in October, so until then ...

Really great trip report. Love the pics.

I have to agree with you on how undercrowded Uni and IOA have been, my boyfriend and I were there a week and a half ago and walked right on everything up until around lunch time... after that, the longest wait was only about 30 min!

Thanks much for the kind words, everyone! I'm all better now, but it wasn't fun. I'm looking forward to going back in October. Had fun with the boys, but now it's time for the grown-up trip! :D
