Trying the west coast

We have a DLR trip coming in may, and a WDW trip coming in October. I am trying to not have a preset bias. I want to be able to compare and contrast the differences, not say one is better than the other. So I will post my revelations later in the year. Unless you are all tired of the subject.

My wife and I loooove Disneyland. Much smaller and more intimate. Carsland at California Adventure is one of the best attractions/lands that Disney has done in a long time. I also loved that we would book a cheap hotel right across the street and walk to DIsneyland. We saved a lot that way (minus the airfare, of course). We also loved seeing the classics we were used to in a new light- Disneyland's Pirates far exceeds the version in WDW and the Haunted Mansion has a different feel too. Oh, be sure to do Indiana Jones because even though it has the same ride system as Dinosaur at AK, it's not even close to the same ride. Oh, you will love it!!!!!!

Heading for the great escape.
Weve been for the last 3 years. Really enjoyed it. the only negative was Paradise pier, average hotel with less than average staff. the local hotel across the road was far more welcoming. The crowds this year were much higher and in the compact park can have an over bearing effect. ToT isnt as good but by and large all othe attractions are better. California Sreamin, is an underrated pleasure and even the carny rides are fun, though the wait for the Big wheel can be deceptively long.

Agree that the food in the parks is on the large better counter service level. DTD is very poor in this respect, HoB is the only place we thought was OK. Better to eat nearby perhaps if in a neighbour hotel.

I went to Disneyland last year and as you can see by my avatar I am a WDW veteran. I went to Disneyland last year very excited and knew it would be great in its own right but I still had a WDW bias attached to me. That being said, after spending a day at Disneyland you realize it is the best individual park of all of them. All of the sudden the things I thought would bother me (less open space, smaller park, just two parks in total) didn't bother me at all. It was unique, it was very personable and very quaint. Plus the history of the park trumps WDW. You can feel it in there. You know how you get that feeling in WDW of a lot of magic happening there? I can guarantee you will get the same feeling at Disneyland. It is the original. You'll feel something there and it might even be better. This coming from a guy who had a WDW bias entering the parks.

Oh, you'll have a blast. Toontown is better, Fantasyland is better, Pirates is better. Indy is unmatched. Matterhorn is unique. WDW has a better Tower of Terror and Splash Mountain I would say. But there are more attractions in Disneyland. It is like asking what is better, steak or lobster? It is impossible to choose. You can't go wrong with either vacation destination.

As a family, we went to DL several times until my husband passed away in 1998. In 2000 I took my daughter to WDW for the first time (I had been there before). It became our together vacation several times a year, sometimes more than that, because it is a place that offers so much for a mother and pre-teen or teen daughter to do together. Then the next time we went back to DL and she saw the castle she couldn't get over how small it was lol. I love DL and WDW in their own way. To the OP, you will love DL for so many of the reason's mentioned above. It is smaller but cozier, Pirates is better, Matterhorn ride is there, (every time I go Indiana Jones is closed for some reason so I have never done it), no buses or even a car is needed if you stay close, and Walt was there. I have a fondness for the park as I was 3 the first time I went, in 1956. But I love WDW for all it has to offer such as 4 parks, water parks, DTD is better, more hotel options, and the memories I have made there with my daughter, it is closer to home as I live in Michigan, and it is the park I frequent most often.

Biggest difference you will notice is the size of the castle! There are a staggering amount of attractions though .. you'll definitely love it

Would love to go, but the flights from DC to Ca are just outrageous! I can't afford it! The actual ticket prices and off site stay are reasonable though, sadly.:jawdrop:
