Trying the west coast

I have only been to DL once, in 1999; we loved it. We are planning a trip to DL for August 2015. I am interested in your observations. Are you staying at a Disney hotel?

BTW, I am a WDW regular. First trip to DLR. Im treating it as a totally different place than WDW.
You will be quite surprised at how many rides are actually in Disneyland. Fantasyland is packed full of some great classic rides. They have Mr Toad's Wild Ride still, Alice, Storybook Canals, Casey's Train, Pinnochio daring journey, etc. And they still have Snow White's Scary Adventure instead of a meet n greet.

My wife and I have been thinking about doing this for years. We are WDW veterans, but have never been to DL. I appreciate everyone's comments. I'm definately going to try to get the family out there to see for myself very soon.

I got three plane tickets to Santa Anna for 198 bucks. We had some credit from last year, unfortunately I haven't bought the return tickets yet. They will be exponentially more I'm afraid. Otherwise the plane flight is not that much more than an Orlando flight.

Same here... we leave in a month!

1st time to the west coast in general for myself, so that's something to look forward to.

I guess as a Disney fan I don't even have to go into it with any sort of un-biased opinion.

1.) As a fan of history, it is the Mecca for Disney fans. Walt watched this place grew, knew it would keep on growing and evolving long after he left, and was his darling project.
2.) From what I have gathered, along with reviews from other people, seems that many of WDW attractions are copies of DLR. I'll be losing AK which has some upside and downside to me as well as DHS. I'd likely miss DHS way more than AK but I can deal with ST, DSM, HTOT at DLR.

What I'll miss the most, EPCOT. Not even for the attractions, since Cars land has the same ride vehicle system from TT and obviously Soarin' but the overall feel of the place. I just know EPCOT like the back of my hand, I know exactly where musical transitions take place, the very retro feel that still exists, roaming the countries and goofing off with the wife in the shops. I'll miss that the most but it's a chance to walk the same Main Street as Walt and I'm a lover of history and of Walt in general so with everything in life there's an upside and a downside in life.

I lucked out... 315 RT PP from Boston to LAX. Direct out, red eye coming home. We're headed out during New England's Feb. school break so after numerous searches on expedia it was 40 more PP to fly to MCO than LAX due to the bastards jacking up prices for the school break.

I usually pay 190-215 RT PP direct from Bos to MCO.

That's awesome! The return home tix for us are looking to be in the 300 plus range as of now. Hoping for a promotional sale like southwest did last year. 99 dollars anywhere. When are you buying park tix?

From a theming standpoint and an actual thrill standpoint I actually found Radiator Springs Racers to be a clear superior ride over Test Track.

You are lucky to be going to Disneyland, and lucky to be enjoying it for the first time. I will say this, if you stay off site like we did, it can be a real bear to get into the parking lot in the morning. Lots of traffic and it is much different than WDW where it is more spread out. Other than that, I never had a complaint about DL.

I read this online over and over, so we are actually booked across the street from the entrance. We have a rental car to drive around LA on our "off" days but we will need to drive to the parks... which is nice.

While EPCOT is a big 'gap' - unless you are the foodie type.. you won't miss it at all in DLR. There is just so many other things to keep your mind occupied.

For one.. you will enjoy the castle park all day and all night... unlike MK... and the attraction density is so high you'll never be without something to ride or see.

DTD being just a stroll away will supplement anyone who has the need to seek out food/shopping.

What you will lack in DLR is the grandular EPCOT brought to the table.. but Disney has been slowly throwing that away over the last 20 years so maybe you won't miss that either :)

We love EPCOT. We always go there first, usually straight to cool zone to walk on the sticky floor. But, it's usually hanging out in the world showcase that we like the best. We usually see illuminations 3-4 times during a week long stay.

great reading all your posts on this topic. I have been bugging my hubby to plan a DL trip for August 2014. We visit WDW once or twice a year and for 2014 I really wanted to try the west coast in addition to our regular FL trip. True it's also an excuse to visit the inlaws and still guarantee myself some fun. Anyway he's totally against it because he says it won't be as much fun as WDW. I know it's smaller but it's still Disney!

Sometimes in WDW, between the months of April to november, and usually around 1:30 in the afternoon, I think to myself "Dang this is a lot of walking, and it's 150 degrees..." Not that I'm complaining, I would never do that on a disney trip. But maybe, just maybe, bigger isn't always better?

Good, good. You don't want to miss the sites of Southern California. There certainly is a mystique about that place long after you've come home and gotten back to work, I can say that for sure. You think about it, you miss it. Nothing is quite like it. Obviously you don't want to miss Disney at all, you want to soak that up. But you want to see Hollywood, take some studio tours (I loved Warner Bros.) and I would hit Universal Studios for sure. Worth it. Then there's the beaches, the L.A. culture to soak up and stuff like that. Definitely smart that you have a rental.
