Trip of Bravery: September 2010

Just got back from the World last night (late) and can't wait to start on my trip report! Can't officially start since our photos are not uploaded yet, but will hopefully be by tomorrow so I can start posting pictures!

Some things you will find in this trip report:
Wizarding World of Harry Potter, and oh yeah, the rest of that park it is in, what's the name?
Our personal reviews of Crowne Plaza Universal (not that anyone will want to stay anywhere other than Disney), and Animal Kingdom Lodge.
LOTS of food and our personal reviews of 9 Disney restaurants.
Lots of birthday and just engaged celebrations!
Lots and lots of bravery on everyone's part!

Not that anyone really cares about our personal reviews of things, but maybe it will help decisions be made for someone else!

I REALLY want to get started on this trip report, and will ASAP. I think it will help with the return to reality I am facing at the moment :ROFLOL:There will not be another Disney trip until December 2011 (15 months!!!) because I will be using all my vacation time on my wedding/honeymoon in May and won't be able to swing and extra Disney trip, as my fiance has nixed a Disney honeymoon :(. So I need this trip report to have something to look forward to other than wedding dress shopping!

Wow I am soooo late on this! I'm so sorry. Wedding planning is (almost) as involved as Disney vacation planning! :ROFLOL:Ok so here we go!

Day 1: Departure day!

Being the mean mommy that I am, I took off work this day, but made my little man go to school. Boo, I know. As I was told multiple times. But, with the promise that the car would be loaded to go, and he would be picked up a little early at 2pm, he went (although reluctantly). I had of course been up since the crack of dawn, making sure all packing was finalized and lugging our bags to the living room so they would be ready to load. I then drove the 20ish miles south to the town Steph lives, so we could take care of some necessities, like mani/pedis, and breakfast for champions.

DSC02404.jpg

Yum. We then got our mani/pedis, which just so happened to be the WORST mani AND pedi I have ever gotten in my life. So, I will not be returning to this place.

After a quick run to the Wal (Mart of course), it was time to head back the 20ish miles to my house to load up and head out! We picked up Brett at 2pm sharp and got on the road to the closest International airport, Lambert, which is in St. Louis. Which is also 2+ hours away. We live in the boonies I tell you! With it being a Friday afternoon, we wanted to have PLENTY of time to get to the airport for our 6:55pm flight. We even took an alternate route around the city just in case. And someone didn't make it very far haha.

DSC02405.jpg

We had to make a quick potty stop at this welcome center that I have NEVER seen, I guess since I usually just drive through the city.

DSC02407.jpg

Got to the terminal in PLENTY of time, and checked our luggage at the curbside check in, and went to find a parking lot. Of course, the airport's economy lot was "full" the guy told me, but "we'll be happy to refer you to the intermediate lot, which is the same distance away, albeit way more expensive." Um, no thanks. He didn't "exactly" say that, but I could read between the lines. So off to find an off airport property economy lot. Which, mind you, I have never had to do, as I have always had rides to the airport. It blows my mind how much they charge to PARK your car. With noone in it. Finally found one on the other side of the freeway, in the lot behind a Hampton Inn. $7/day. Woo! But then have to start the process of: finding a spot, unloading the car, rechecking the car, getting your luggage to the front (a guy on a golf cart did pick us up though), waiting for a shuttle, getting on the shuttle, waiting for more people so the shuttle is full, getting to the airport, getting off the shuttle, blah blah blah. Plus, they dropped off at the main terminal first, and we were the east terminal (the Southwest terminal). By the time we got through security (which is NOT bad, as Southwest is the only carrier in this terminal except one day a week I think) it was around 6:45! It's a good thing we left at 2 instead of the originally planned 3pm! Over 4 hours it took us to make a normally 2 hour trip. Our flight was delayed until about 7:30, so we had time to grab some food.

She will hate me for this one...

DSC02409.jpg

Oh, seeing this picture reminds me. Steph had ordered all 3 of us matching "I'm Going To Walt Disney World" t-shirts from the Disney Store, so we wore them on departure day. NOONE could tell where we were going, I'm sure lol.

Flight was uneventful, and it was late when we got to Orlando. We took the "pretend monorail" to the main terminal.

DSC02412.jpg

And waited for our bags.

DSC02413.jpg

Now that I think about it, it took a while for our bags this time. At the time I was just thinking "please don't let my bag be burned and melted again." Luckily, none of our bags had been set on fire haha.

Then we meandered to the rental car places. National desk was closed (of course), but the kiosks were open. I had reserved a car before we left, securing a VERY good discount of $45 for a full-size car. With the damage waiver and taxes, it came to around $80 for the one day, which I thought was decent. When I checked into the kiosk, the total came to over $130, and I lost my mind. It took FOREVER to track down a worker, who argued with me (although I had the rental receipt in my vacation book) that the $130 was correct, but he would get an Alamo guy to look at it. He, too, argued with me, until I AGAIN whipped out my "book" and showed him the agreement. He tried to say that was without taxes, but I showed him where the taxes had been already added and asked what kind of tax is $50?! At one point I threatened to call a cab, as it HAD to be cheaper than what they were charging me. He then backed down stating "I will take care of it for you, and charge you only the $80 price you say" like he was doing me a flippin favor or something! Ugh. I was SO mad. But I said thank you, and made my way out to pick out our car. Or, rather, Brett picked out our car. A Chevy HHR which I REALLY liked driving!

I had borrowed my mom's Garmin before we left, just for this reason of getting us FROM the airport TO the Crowne Plaza Universal, so late at night. This proved to be pointless, as 1) it took half the drive to figure out where we were and load, and 2) after it did, Steph STILL got us lost twice, looking at it. Her directionaly priveleges were quickly revoked. I gave them back later in the trip, and they were again revoked. We FINALLY made it, and I went to check in.

Being as we were staying in a 14ish story hotel, I had called a few weeks in advance and requested the highest floor possible so we could see stuff. When I checked in, she said "5th floor." I explained that we had requested a high floor, and she shrugged her shoulders at me, and said "5th floor." OOOOOOOOK. Nice girl apparently. I was so tired I didn't even argue, and we dragged all of our bags to our 5th floor room. When we get there, it was a king bed. There were 2 3/4 people (since he is now almost to my shoulders he counts as 3/4 instead of 1/2). I went BACK down and explained we were given a king bed for 3 people. She pulled up my reservation, and said "well that's what they have you booked as, a king bed." OOOOOOOOK, well that isn't right, as my reservation is for 3 people. "Well, ma'am, I don't know what to tell you, as we booked you for a king." Smoke is about to roll out of my ears. It is UNACCEPTABLE and it SHOULD NOT have been booked that way, and I don't know what to tell you except FIX IT! We were given a 2 queen room. On the 6th floor haha.

It is now AFTER midnight. We showered, and got in bed. As soon as we get to sleep, there is a knock at the door. I ignored it the first time, but they knocked again, louder. I answered it, and it was a guy with a birthday cake. I forgot I told them it was Brett's birthday. Nice gesture, but 1am? Seriously? Ugh. Oh well, we had a few bites, and went back to bed.

OK so one month later and I will attempt to continue/finish my trip report. It's been a rough/busy month! :ROFLOL:

Day 2: Islands of Adventure, AKA "Harry Potter World"

We got up SUUUUUPER early this morning so we could all get ready and be first in line! Well, it worked! We even got a smidge bit lost (seems like a theme doesn't it?) and still made it. Steph has been a Harry Potter fan from the beginning. I am a "new" fan and have just recently been reading the books and have watched all the movies so far. (She has read them multiple times and sees the movies at the midnight showings, so I definately am not as big a fan as she is). But as soon as we saw stuff on the Wizarding World, we knew we had to go! And since our schedule would only allow for a few hours here, we knew we had to go early! We stood in line with our coffees for over an hour, but were the first ones in the gate!

Our first glimpse of Hogwarts!

DSC00032.jpg

We, along with the other 100's of people in line, headed straight for Hogsmeade.

DSC00099.jpg

We jumped in line for the Forbidden Journey, which I have to say is WAY cool and immersive. I found myself not caring I was standing in a line.

DSC00060.jpg

DSC00061.jpg

DSC00058.jpg

I felt like I had literally been dropped into a movie! One thing I disliked was the whole locker thing. 1) it made me feel like I was at Six Flags and 2) there were so many people crammed in that room you couldn't get to them. Very cheesy.

So we rode the ride, I was a good girl and put away my camera. Here is where the bravery starts. I am a chicken. I'll admit it. Dinosaur scares the you-know-what out of me. I was fully expecting to be terrified of this ride, but made a vow to watch every second so I could say I did. Except for the dragon, I can honestly say I never closed my eyes. Screamed, yes. But kept my eyes open. For any of you who have not gotten to experience this ride, it is fantastic. It combines all the excitement of a movie, a ride, and props and smushes it all together in one amazing, chaotic experience. You get off saying "what the heck just happened?! That was awesome!"

We wanted to ride again, but I had never been to IOA, so I wanted to do everything! So off we went.

My besties in front of Hogwarts

DSC00076.jpg

The pumpkin juice was AWESOME. I didn't care for the butterbeer at all. But the pumpkin juice reminded me of Thanksgiving!

DSC00083.jpg

DSC00093.jpg

DSC00100.jpg

We also rode the Hippogriff ride, which was lame for me, but after the sensory overload of FJ, Brett thought it was great.

We headed through Dr. Seuss land, where I was in search of my 2 "must have" souvenirs: thing 1 and thing 2 t-shirts for me and Brett! We rode the Cat in the Hat ride, and I bought them on my way out.

DSC02442.jpg

We then headed toward the comic book place, and rode Spiderman, which was pretty cool.

DSC02452.jpg

Brett was too short for the Hulk, so we moved on to Toon Lagoon, where I had this brilliant idea that I wanted to ride Ripsaw Falls.

DSC02460.jpg

Wow. I have never been so wet in my ENTIRE life. At least, not with clothes on. Not a single millimeter of me was dry. I didn't even get that wet in the shower that morning I don't think. Luckily I had my camera in the back part of my purse which was against my body or it would have been ruined.

Now, being so afraid of Dinosaur, I was terrified to get on Jurassic Park. But being the trip of bravery, we did, and it is NOT scary AT ALL. I would compare it to Living with the Land haha.

DSC02461.jpg

Before departing, we had to get little Harry a wand.

DSC02464.jpg

And ride the Suess train, which I was determined to ride.

DSC02443.jpg

I love rides that go through restaurants :)

We wanted to explore Hogsmeade more, but the line to get in the GIFT SHOP was an hour and a half. I am clausterphobic. And a crowded Hogsmeade is not condusive to that. So, being hot, wet, and hungry, we decided to leave and head to Disney property!!!

Can't wait to read more! And as I am from St. Louis, I just wanted to say that last time I had to park my car and leave it at the airport almost the exact same thing happened to me. The guy was trying to make me go into the more expensive lot, almost forcefully...pretty ridiculous!

So, I once again realize I have waited ENTIRELY too long to do this, but I have been soooo busy with work and wedding, it slipped my priority list! :brick:I know, right. So I understand if noone wants to read this now, but it's ok. I need to finish it for myself! So where I left off, we were hot, wet, and tired of Universal spirit and in need of some Disney magic! We hopped in the little car, and headed for our home away from home for the week, Animal Kingdom Lodge!

DSC02466.jpg

DSC02467.jpg

I was so excited to stay here, ever since I saw Samantha stay there in Great Hotels. I visited briefly in 2005, just to check it out, and was so in awe by the lobby I thought "I must stay here!" We walked in the front door, and the smells and sounds were fabulous. I could hear drums coming from downstairs and it just made the experience all that more authentic. Also, the CMs here are wonderful. Very friendly, very knowledgeable, much better than the Wilderness Lodge (sorry WL CMs!) The one thing I did not like is that I felt that the lobby was a little "cramped" with the furniture in the little pods. I constantly felt like I was walking right through the middle of someone's conversation or living room or something and couldn't stay out of the way.

DSC02468.jpg

Anyhoo, we checked in at the desk, retrieved a "It's My Birthday" button for Brett, a "Just Engaged" button for myself, paid for our dining plan, and had our tickets transferred to our KTTW cards. Easy-peasy. We hauled our massive amount of luggage up to our room.

DSC02470.jpg

Our room was great. It was a studio savanna view room and was a good size and all. The resort was overall great, however, I felt like I never could get my bearings, which bothered me. I was constantly turning the wrong way, going across a bridge I wasn't supposed to be, looking out the window thinking "that's not our savanna" and generally getting lost. And I have a pretty much fantastical sense of direction. Also, our floor smelled. It was a combination of smoke and mustiness or funky feet or something. I know all Disney resorts are smoke free, but it smelled like stale smoke the whole time we were there. They even shampooed the carpets one day, and then it just smelled like wet smokey funky musty feet. I don't know. It took away from the ambiance for me. Also, it was a LOOOOONG walk to anywhere. Which was aggravating. I make it sound like it was awful, which it was not, but I think I prefer WL over AKL overall.

I will apologize in advance for all of the animal pictures. I thought it was totally fascinating to be able to see them outside my room. I felt like I was living in a zoo.

I can't exactly remember what we did next, although it must not have been much, since I have no note or pictures of it. At this time it was around 2-ish, and it was warm, and there were no animals. I think I sat on the balcony waiting for a while, and when they didn't come, decided to head over to the Dolphin to drop off the car. We got to the Dolphin, realized we needed to top off the tank, and turned around to go to the station there by the boardwalk. We used a total of $3.08 of gas! I felt ridiculous even filling it up. I felt like we had driven all over creation. Oh well. Maybe with gas prices the way they are, I should look into one of those....

I kind of just drove up under the port coche or whatever those things are called you drive through at hotels, and didn't know what to do. I got out, looking lost, and people just walked by me. Finally I said "EXCUSE ME, what do I do with this thing?" And the guy looked at me like I had another head. He took the car from me, and I haven't been arrested for grand theft, so I'm assuming he returned it to the correct place.

We sort of wandered through the Dolphin, which I had never been, and it was underwhelming. It was kind of tacky looking...

DSC02475.jpg

I know I can get a discount here, being a nurse and all, but I think I would rather stay at a value than here. It had no magic.

DSC02476.jpg

We walked to the Yacht Club, to wander through to the Beach Club, for our ADR @ Cape May. We were officially starved and exhausted by then, but we needed to pep up for the evening ahead. We checked in early for our 5pm ADR, so we took a set on the benches to the side of the restaurant, and I'm pretty sure I took a snooze.

DSC02479.jpg

Paparazzi style through the ferns!

Apparently I wasn't the only one that snoozed...

I say first trip of many, which isn't exactly true. I didn't want to overdo it, because we had more eating to do! So we hopped a bus to the Magic Kingdom to our first dessert party!

I had decided a couple of weeks before the trip to surprise them with ressies to the dessert party. I couldn't keep it a secret for 15 minutes. I was just too darn excited. Anyhoo, as soon as we got to the MK, my mom called and said there was a message on their home phone from my bank saying I needed to call this number to verify some "suspicious purchases" Ok, I understand they are looking out for my identity and what not, but I have a couple problems with this. 1) Why would they call my home number (well my parents, but it was mine too when I opened my account umpteen years ago) if there are purchases being made from Florida. If it was my home phone, and the purchases were legitimate, I am not there to retrieve said messages. 2) Did they not notice the 3 roundtrip tickets to Orlando I purchased with the same account? The gas from the gas station on the way to St. Louis? The purchase from the bagel place in St. Louis airport? So on and so forth? COME ON BANK!!! So, I stopped in the front before you go under the train station to call this automated number. It was at this very moment my phone decides to act up. It says "push 1 to agree, push 2 to disagree, push 3 to repeat" and I push 3 to have it repeat the purchases they are questioning, as I didn't understand the robot on the other end of the line. Instead of repeating, it says "thank you!" and clicks off. Well, at this point, I try to call again, it says it has already been resolved, and I go on not worrying about it. I already had my loaded gift card for purchasing, and my DDP is on my KTTW so we're good.

We make a beeline for

DSC02492.jpg

As we had missed it in November due to the refurb. I personally loved it. But of course I do. It's Disney. We even got FP's for later. I think it was starting to get time to check in for the party, we probably rode the TTA, as it is our old standby, and then went to get in line. The line is stupid. Why make you check in 40 minutes early, if you are just going to stand there and not do anything? But the dessert party was delicious. I think I ate my weight in chocolate covered strawberries. I have very few pictures, as I was trying to enjoy the experience, and also not fall asleep. The view of Wishes from here was awesome. Overall, it was a great experience, albeit a pricey one, but it's Disney so of course it is. (It was the same price as a decent TS for all three of us). I will definately do it again though.

DSC02494.jpg

DSC02495.jpg

I don't think we did much after the fireworks, we were exhausted. So we headed back to the AKL, which is AWESOME at night!

Day 3: Our last flight to Endor, and the day we waited in line for Rock N Roller Coaster.

I also have few pictures of this day! What on earth! I do remember I was wearing a tshirt dress (you will know why in a minute). We started out this day at Hollywood Studios, and decided against the mass exodus toward you-know-where, as it is fun, and the queue is neat, but it is not great enough to get trampled over. So, after mulling it over a little, Brett decided to try RnRC. I had never even given it as an option before, as the kid screams bloody murder at the thought of ToT and Splash. But, this being the trip of bravery and all, we went. We got right to that area that looks over the side toward ToT, right before you enter the doors, and stopped. After a while of standing, we sat.

DSC02501.jpg

This is why I remember the dress. It was a tshirt dress, so it was thin. I apparently sat on a crack in the concrete. A crack filled with water. Ew. I felt like I had peed myself. Oh well. So we were sitting, and sitting, and sitting. There was apparently an emergency, so they made everyone get out of line and come back later. That's nice. Now the kid will really be scared. We grabbed some FP's and vowed to come back. I know we did this:

DSC02502.jpg

And this:

DSC02507.jpg

Bittersweet it was. I remember riding Star Tours when I was 6, and thinking I was really "big time" and all. I'm excited for the new rides, but it will always have a special place in my heart. **sniff sniff**

Ok, enough sap. We also did this!

DSC02508.jpg

I hadn't done Muppet Vision in a couple of trips! We then used these:

DSC02509.jpg

I literally cannot find ANY ToT pictures! What's up with that?! I know we rode it, because we were going to child swap, and Steph rode first. After she got off, Brett had decided he could do it. So we all got back in the standby line (which wasn't that long) and we got ON the elevator, when he started freaking out crying and she took him downstairs so I could ride. I swear I've seen more of that elevator than any other ride. There's a -1 on the bravery scale. ALTHOUGH we did get him farther on it than we ever have! So maybe we can count a +1/2!!!

I know we went back to this little beauty for a while to clean up and rest.

DSC02517.jpg

We ate at the Mara, and went swimming. Which I know I took pictures of, but where the heck are they?! I think the ones must still be on my Fuji. These just may be the ones from my Sony. I'll post them when I find them.

On the way out, we found this!

DSC02516.jpg

That is.....The Royal Asante Suite! It was on our floor, on the same side of the lobby as our room, so we passed it every time we walked to the lobby! I was fascinated with this room every time we passed it! Once we walked by and the door was cracked for mousekeeping and I tried to peek in. Another evening on the way to the pool, a family was walking out, like on their way to dinner. I wanted to ask for a tour. But I chickened. How do I get a tour of this suite?! (Without have to stalk the guests that are staying there?)

When I planned this birthday surprise trip back in like January, Steph and I made a list of ADRs we wanted, and knew Brett would enjoy (keep in mind he is not your typical chicken nuggets and pizza kid, we like steak, sushi, and the like). So we made a list of all of our regulars, and a few "un-regulars" for us. One of those un-regulars was Liberty Tree Tavern, as Steph had never been there. So we booked it for this night, followed by time at the MK. When we gave Brett the list in his book for his birthday, one of the first things out of his mouth was "ooo mommy! Are we gonna get to eat at that place that spins around with Chip and Dale again?! It's my favorite!" Dang it, I though Sci-Fi was your favorite! Oh well. It is now 3 weeks before our trip. But I tried. And succeeded! So off to Garden Grill we go!

DSC02527.jpg

Steph and Brett go off in search of a hidden Mickey in the wallpaper, and I agree to wait at the table to order drinks. (They are the big hidden Mickey stalkers, I feel like some of them are a bit of a stretch, like this particular wallpaper Mickey, which looks like an elephant). I'm sitting there fooling around with my camera, and see something out of the corner of my eye and look up to find....

DSC02519.jpg

What the heck Dale??? Brett will NOT believe me if I don't have a pic of this! Dale is his favorite and I KNOW that! He just sat down and started coloring on Brett's menu! We kept it, of course. He and I had a nice chat, and I asked him to please return later, because my son LOVES him, and he took off. It was hilarious.

We got our food, which was good as always.

DSC02521.jpg

You can see the mustaches Dale drew on the fairies if you look closely...
