Treasure Planet

I must be weird. I thought Treasure Planet was a great movie.

It bombed, causing Disney stock to drop -- according to AOL news.

Someone give me a clue here. Why didn't anyone go to see it?

Well, hmm...here's my guess...no interest. (not being wise with that remark)

I want to see it, it looks like it is visually stunning (but so did Atlantis and Dinosaur and I didn't really care for either of those)

But, think, from the trailers...what is the movie lacking??? 1. Music... 2. Female characters 3. a storyline you could follow. 4.Comedy

(Granted, it was only a trailer...but when I saw the trailers, it was only a bunch of quick shots of stunning art work...no real storyline that you could follow...or even make out)

Now, think back at some of the other Disney successes...
Lion King (the biggest money maker)...The trailer set a mood, gave a storyline with the "Circle of Life" song...The Circle of Life song had a nice mood to it in itself, great artwork, comedic characters...and a "love" side to it.
Monsters Inc. (ok, so it was riding on Pixar's name)...but...still had funny commercials and lovable characters (even from the trailers)
Aladdin...see Lion King
Lilo & Stitch...lovable characters...funny trailers...decent artwork (with the space chase) and they even through the hawaiian rollercoaster ride song in one of them.

Now...think about the "bombs"
Dinosaur...Hmm...an egg...(but great art)...
Atlantis...no love story...great art...no music

It all depends on how the movie was marketed...and Disney once again thought that the name of the film (TREASURE PLANET) (would attract the boys)...and the great art would drag the parents...but it failed.
PLUS!!! Think about when it opened...you have Harry Potter...(every kid wants to see Harry Potter...even if it's for a second or third time) James Bond...(Every Parent and teen went to see this)

But, to be honest...it may have just been bad marketing...it could be a fantastic movie...but I just notice lately that DISNEY (Pixar films excluded) has been getting away from "musicals" which is what made their movies great...

What was their last FANTASTIC movie (Lilo & Stitch was good...but not a true "Disney Classic" in my eyes)... TARZAN...GREAT MOVIE...and what did it have...UNBELIEVABLY GOOD SONGS. (as did Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty & the Beast, Lion King, etc.)

I dunno, just my opinion...

For the very reasons that Vince*AKA* Merhearted has allready posted. I loved the movie and I thought it was AWESOME,but they were way off from their base. They targetted SCI fi lovers, yet ScI FI lovers primarily don`t turn to Disney for their SCI FI entertainment. and Most of your Disney fans don`t like the fact that they have strayed from the Disney formula, you know a pretty princess and handsome prince and Wonderful music and ballads with astonishing animation. Again I say I loved it,but I am not the average Disney fan.

Well.. I went and saw the movie on monday.. and it was stunning.. still it lacked those certain things the old Disney movies had. But.. it was a good movie! The robot...(is Ben his name?!) got very annoying through the movie .. and he kinda ruined it. One thing my brother noticed (he is an animator) was that when they went back in time to when the boy was a baby.. he very much resembeled the baby tarzan.... Oh well :) it was a good movie.. you all should go and see it.:D

I think you're on the right track with your four points -- and your other comments.

The movie has a good story line -- they just didn't make it obvious in the trailers. I think they mistakenly assumed that most people have read Treasure Island and would know the basic plot.

I also don't think it was "balanced" in a way that today's audiences expect. Ie. As you said, they expect female characters and humor as well as suspense and action. Slow parts and fast parts.

And the music, too. It was good but not as good as Titan AE, which I really liked a lot.

I liked this way better than Atlantis. I will definitely get the DVD. TP's Long John Silver, as others have already posted on the movie forum, is one of the best animated characters of all time. And that was probably another shortcoming. Long John Silver had more depth and personality than Jim (the main character) did. I don't think they made us understand why Jim wanted the treasure so much. He didn't struggle and grow like Simba or the Beast.

Interesting points. I took my boys to see it last week (wife had to work, but she gave permission for us to go). My 14 year old really enjoyed it, but then I think that's the age Disney was trying to target.

I can't help but wonder if Disney made a mistake trying to crossover the high-tech sci-fi, with the "traditional designs" of sailing. I mean, another universe or not, they have the technology to use solar sails to harness energy, but store food in barrels? And do I need to mention the whole we-don't-need-life-support-equipment issue?

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the film a great deal. But if you ask any 8 year old what happens when you step outside of your space vehicle without a space suit, most will probably say you will die. Today's young people have been too well educated, and if you're going to ignore some of the basics, like Disney did, you better have some type of an explanation.

And I think my boys want to take my wife to see it, so she won't miss out (and it's an excuse for them to see it again :animwink: ).

Another good point!! It didn't bother me or my kids because I thoght the effects were neat and I was willing to buy into the concept. (Much more believable than the bizarre world in Atlantis.) But I can see where it would get in the way for some people.

I think the treasure hiding "area" and booby trapped ship and the time door were stretching things a little. And some of the bizarre characters didn't work well for me.

But I really liked the ships and would love to sail through space on them... I could even buy into the "space whales."
