Ok, I'm going to Disney next year for my honeymoon. I'm from Louisiana. I'm petrified of flying, so that's out of the question. Does anyone take an AmTrak to Disney? And if so, do you have to rent a car when you get there, or how does that work? Thanks for the help anybody

why not just drive from LA -- it's only a 1 day drive -- and then you won't have to rent a car.

Well, we're going in January and we're driving then. But we're leaving for the honeymoon the morning after the wedding, so we'll be tired, want to spend time with each other without having to drive 12 hours. We wanted something different and easier.

Since you're starting a new life together with your hubby, maybe that would be a good time to attempt a flight and get past the fear of flying.

Or, you could just drink the glass of milk.

I commend your obscure A-Team reference. :)

Here is the line I assume you would be on:

You would have to play around with it a bit- sometimes it can take even longer than driving. I know we looked into it once, just for fun, on one of our trips from Chicago to Phoenix. It looked like a huge PITA so we flew instead.

You have plenty of time to figure it out- here are the rental car places nearest the Amtrak station.

Take the train, then take a cab to Disney. One thing about Amtrak is they only have one train a day each way. Due to Katrina Amtrak will not be running any trains west of San Antonio to Orlando till sometime in 2006 ( tracks are torn up). Check the Amtrak web site for futher updates. Also congrads on the upcoming wedding!

I travel by train lots with my family. I hate to fly, too! It's not necessarily cheaper if you get a sleep compartment, but it is still relaxing and fun. The trains are a bit worn, especially that line. Not horrible, but don't expect Canadian or European quality. Anyway, I would only have one warning for you: the one time we planned a trip to Disney on Amtrak was when we lived in Houston. So it was the same Amtrak line you will take. In fact, we were going to pick it up in NOLA to save on some time (lots of stops in TX). We never did make the train, because they called just as we were leaving to drive to NOLA to tell us that the train was 14 hours behind schedule. Now I can be flexible, but that was missing an entire day of vacation! Also, it was going to put us in on a different night than our reservation. So we just decided to drive the whole way and they refunded our money. I have found out since that this particular line gets that far behind schedule often. So just be sure that you either have a back up plan (driving), or the flexibility in your plans to shift a day of vacation. Congratulations on the impending nuptials!

My wife and I love to take the train, its a great way to see the country. We've ridden arround the country a few times However, having said that, the Train that runs between LA and Orlando is the Sunset Limited and is one of, if not THE worst train in the country for On-Time performance. It is not uncommon for the train to get up to 40 hours behind schedule and it is sometimes even just aborts because it is so far behind schedule. We were on the Empire Builder last year with a gentleman who said he was on the Sunset Limited and was just put off at a station in the middle of Texas as the train had been aborted due to being so far behind. It's not Amtrak's fault, its the fault of the carriers that Amtrak leases rail rights from. Amtrak runs on Union Pacific from LA to NO and on CSX rail from NO to Orlando. Both railroads, and Union Pacific is the worst, have a really bad habbit of sticking the Sunset Limited in a siding while they run all their freight past it. Even when they get the track in the NO area repaired there will probably be a backlog of freight traffic that they will want to get moved and not help Amtrak's schedule.

best luck,

Kevin and Mona :xmas:

Well..............

If it was up to me, I would fly, I was very scared on my first plane tripe, but I was only 8, so it really depends on how you feel, and how much trouble your willing to go through by riding a train. Thats what I think Anyway.

I would much rather drive myself than ride a train. Takes about the same amount of time - but with a train you're paying a lot more and you have to rent a car to get to Disney!

It's an 11 hour drive for us, and we do it all the time. Gives me and my husband a chance to catch up on each other's lives. And we LOVE having our own vehicle at Disney.

If you don't mind finding out about a taxi/shuttle service to your hotel (and I'm assuming your staying on WDW property), then I really don't see a need to rent a car at all.

Thanks for your input everyone. I really appreciate it. Erika, thanks for those links, and congrats on becoming a mommy! I meant rent a car to get from the train station to Disney, and if we wanted to go somewhere one day other than Disney. (My fiance LOVES Olive Garden. Last time we went there three times I think lol)

Driving isn't that bad, it's just I know we'll both be so tired after the wedding and all. I don't know, I guess we'll still have to discuss things.

Oh and we planned on staying somewhere really nice, like AKL or something. Which hotels, if any, have honeymoon suites? We're going in January with my fiance's parents and we're staying at Pop Century, and I want our honeymoon to be top of the line lol. Thanks again

My friends wife had a fear of flying. She flew for the first time on their honeymoon to Disneyworld. But she said that her fears were lost once she got to Disney. It helped her out.

I'll put in another vote for flying. I've heard from other people with airplane anxiety (our own tigsmom, for one) that a couple tranquilizers beforehand can really take the edge off. If you can psyche yourself into it, it sounds like the best option for your situation.
