Toy Story Land expansion announced for Disney's Hollywood Studios

I'd love to know the thought process behind not building a third or even fourth attraction in this area. It absolutely can't be cost, small flat rides cost absolute peanuts for a company like Disney.

This is also the reason I cannot fathom out of all the toys available at their disposal why Slinky Dog was chosen for roller coaster. If there was another theme on the rollercoaster, the Slinky Dog Spin ride would have seemed another obvious, small-form factor addition that could be easily slotted in. As it is, the two existing concepts that are out in other parks (Toy Soldiers Parachute Drop and RC Racer) present visible height intrusion problems.

You're right about the height, but I was looking over images of the other TSLs and the RC Racer looks the most like an actual, giant toy. Of course what the land REALLY needs are enclosed, heavily themed attractions - a dark ride, or how about some sort of AA show along the lines of Country Bears featuring all the toys? Now that I think about it, that would have been perfect.

Something like a Toy Box Revue would be an amazing addition. Could you imagine, if the band for the show looked like a wind up toy band backing up our stars like Wheezy? There is so much potential with a toy theme that it really is a shame that lands are now generally just 2 or three attractions.
After several visits to Disneyland, I've really started thinking about and appreciating small-form/small-footprint attractions and their importance. Even though WDW has the "luxury of space", I wish we could get back to a time where a land was littered with a half-dozen or more attractions. It seems the push is generally for large attractions now, and I worry that imagineers do not have the desire (or perhaps more correctly, the constraints put on them by legal and other departments) to create a small intimate attraction anymore, like the old dark rides.

Similar, but I believe it is a completely new sculpt.

Yes, the sculpt is different, the ears are definitely different and the coaster undercarriage is different. So besides that fact that the both look like a slinky dog, they are nothing alike. It definitely wasn't a re-use of an existing ride vehicle.

I think the Slinky Dog coaster trains' movement could be improved. For example, the head, ears, arms, tail, etc. could move. It could actually expand and contract.

However, I don't see how it could look much different or much better than it does.

I think the flat-ride vehicle looks better! (Richer colors, more contour.) Sheesh, this looks like street carnival garbage. Wow.

So they are saying The Toy Story Land will open summer of 2018. Using Pandora as a reference point, can anyone estimate when they might do a soft opening? Does Disney do soft openings to test things out?

I really wouldn't go by Avatar since I believe it only soft opened one day ahead of the official opening. Unlike Avatar, TSL should be complete well ahead of summer 2018, so I would expect earlier soft openings along with other previews.

Apart from the saucer ride based on the aliens and the slinky dog coaster, are there any other attractions confirmed or rumoured for this area?

Thanks for the hope. My wife and I will be there at the end of April and the beginning of May so maybe we will get to see some of it.
