Top 5 Movies for 2016 (They did it)

Okay. Anyway, I voiced an opinion of a movie based on its trailers and promotional materials, all of which are designed to arouse audience interest, and in my case, they didn't. And our resident silly man tried to pick a fight with me over it, and then you joined in, pulling Muppet references out of the blue. I think you might need to examine your own behavior before you judge someone else's. Submitted with respect.

I just think it's funny how someone who's always going on about how important WDAS is to the company and how he really wants to see them succeed is so quick to throw an upcoming WDAS film under the bus.

I don't find what I've seen of Moana via its promotional materials appealing, but I hope it's successful whether I like it or not.

I was trying to make a good-natured "ribbing", which I apologize for if it was found offensive. I sincerely meant the respect part and the nice things I said about my normally respecting your opinions and frequently agreeing with them. The defensive attack on me (someone who said next to nothing to you) is really uncalled for.

Well, I appreciate the nice things and the apology, and I apologize for the attack on you. :)

Honestly, I can't recall a single Disney animated film since 2009 that had great advertising. I'd normally agree on trailers-selling-movies but with WDAS I'm willing to show a bit more flexibility.

Tangled, Frozen, BH6 and WiR all had trailers that looked extremely lame. Were I not a fan with kids, I wouldn't have seen any of them. But at this point (and with it's contributors) I'll expect it to be good until proven otherwise.

On the contrary: so many movies with great trailers show it all in the trailer and have nothing to back it with. Star Wars notwithstanding (but they mostly tease)

I'm not kidding when I say that this trailer sold me on Moana. I was already pretty pumped when I heard that they were actually getting a Polynesian teenager to play Moana, that there wasn't going to be a love story, that Lin Manuel Miranda was writing the music, and Alan Tudyk was in the movie (though he's lending his voice to practically every Disney feature now), but this has got to be one of the cutest things I've seen.

What's the plot? Something along the lines of "Girl has to travel to save her family, teams up with a demi god voiced by the Rock." Pretty sure she has some sort of water controlling power.

I thought the trailers for Wreck It Ralph were actually pretty good, but I tend to agree when it comes to Disney;s trailers.

Semi-related, but I remember that The Good Dinosaur and Zootopia had trailers drops right around the same time (Zootopia's was technically the "teaser" IIRC) and there was a lot of debate in one of the Spirit threads about them and a number of folks were much higher on TGD than Zootopia. It's interesting how things work out though compared to first impression (that said, I loved the Zootopia teaser)

Okay bringing this back on track ... we're a month + closer to the end of the year, Disney now has 3 movies over a billion for 2016. And the box office to beat is to take the #5 spot is Batman v. Superman at just over 873 Million.

Doctor Strange is first up on 11/04, and as the first previews and comments are rolling in it seems to be having a lot of better buzz than I was expecting. I still don't see it as a contender for top 5; maybe top 10.

Moana, as a "holiday" release on 11/23, gets a decent bump like past holders of that date. Despite a few issues that were quickly corrected marketing-wise the general sentiment of people seems VERY high. Maybe approaching Frozen levels, which was unexpected. Moana could be lined up to to take a top 5 spot and/or crack a billion dollars.

Rogue One, with a highly profitable date of 12/16, is almost certain (baring any extreme issues) to land the #1 spot. By how much is the question.

The only remaining real threat to Disney finishing with a solid 5 for 5 this year is Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them; which is in an almost a similar narrative/marketing position as Rogue One. The Harry Potter franchise is a heavy hitter. Yet the hype for it seems partly lacking compared to Rogue One and the IMAX "Global Fan Event" that was far more advertised than the similarly timed Doctor Strange IMAX event but both seemed to have garnered about the same level of enthusiasm (at least here in the US). Fantastic Beasts looks like a great movie, and thus far the HP based movies do extremely well world wide. Maybe the exposure level just hasn't fully ramped up for it yet.

Moana has an edge in the cast and crew. A lot of people will see this because the Rock is in it. Others will see this because of the songs written by Lin Manuel Miranda, who is on fire right now.

And that's not even counting that since WDAS has had such a great track record the past few years, many will give this a shot on that strength alone.

I wish I could be excited about some of these, but I think I'm really suffering from 'sequelitis'. While I like Benedict Cumberbatch, I am so tired of watching him play the smartest guy in the room (Sherlock, Khan, Alan Turing, Doctor Strange). Still ticked off about Tulsa Swinton being cast as the Ancient One as well. I'll still be in the theater opening weekend, so I really hope it's better than what I'm expecting. In terms of the box office, it'll probably be towards the lower end of the Marvel box office, but still respectable.

I'm having some doubts about Fantastic Beasts as well, because, well, the plot of Cursed Child was not Rowling's best (I'm aware that she did not write the script, but she was given credit for the story). The recent news that it will be 5 movies rather than 3 troubles me a little as well. It seems that despite the advertising, people don't know that a HP prequel is being released. I love Harry Potter, but I don't feel excited to see the movie (but like Strange, I will be there opening weekend). I can see it being in the Top 10, but maybe not the Top 5.

As for Rogue One, I have no doubt that this will be one of the highest grossing movies of the year, judging TFA's box office performance. However, unless people do their research, I don't believe that the majority will know that it takes place before A New Hope (I've had to correct a few people that Daisy Ridley is not the star or Rogue One). My guess is that it will be 1 or 2 at the box office.

Moana (the one I'm looking forward to the most) will probably fall somewhere between 5-7, depending on how the others do.

In any case, Batman v. Superman will not be in the top 5.

I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt on this one. After all, I was initially skeptical of the choice to change Big Hero 6 from all Japanese (because how rare is it to have a film produced in the US with a large ensemble cast of all Japanese people and it's NOT a period piece?) to a more diverse cast, and that wound up working very well.

When there was drama about The Mandarin being played by Ben Kingsley, I could at least understand it a bit more, since the character in the comics was a bit of a stereotype (and then the movie came out and all of the drama didn't really matter anymore). In this case, it looked like Disney just didn't want to tick off China and their box office, since The Ancient One was originally a Tibetan man.

Idk, there's been a lot of whitewashing lately, and it's really starting to bug me, when it could have all been so easily avoided.
(for the record, my skin is pretty white; I just don't like to see others be denied opportunities in movies and tv)

Considering that Doctor Strange will be aided by a diverse crew, I'm not really sure this can really be called "whitewashing". It's problematic, but it does seem that they are trying to make up for it elsewhere.

It is unfortunate how much influence the Chinese government wields on American filmmaking. For instance, Kate McKinnon's character in Ghostbusters was apparently supposed to be LGBT (because if you're gonna have the MRAs mad at you, you may as well go whole hog), but Sony insisted they drop that so it would play in China. They did, and... it still wasn't released in China, because apparently that whole ghost business runs afoul of China's rules regarding the supernatural, which you really think they should have seen coming to begin with, but no one ever accused movie executives of being smart.

Oh I can assure you, all of Tumblr is convinced she played the character as gay. While it wasn't obvious, I think McKinnon at least hinted at it in the movie.

The supernatural nature and potential LGBT-ness of Ghostbusters where both small factors in it not being released in China. They did come into play but Sony knew long before the film had a very slim chance of getting one of the extremely few import exemptions for that market. (Generally less than 30 per year, thus far only 2 of the top 20 movies this year didn't release in China, Deadpool and Suicide Squad.) Especially against the giant stack of other moves this year with a lot of market history that were willing to ... "financially" pursue those spots. Sony had already put their money behind Angry Birds as their moneymaker of the year and while the movie didn't tank per se it didn't pan out like they hoped. Sony had no reason to try to push for Ghostbusters in a market with minimal brand recognition, so they didn't bother to pursue it past the initial exemption request.

(Personally I think Ghostbusters would have probably played decently in China and would have improved their box office by 45-ish million.)
