I haven't seen this mentioned here but the carousel twitter account mentioned that there are plans to get rid of the speedway. Any substance to that? @marni1971
The speedway really needs to go if no other reason than to make a better transition from FL to TL. Also the fact that you can hear and smell the speedway from well inside FL doesn't help either. I'd love to see the BATB ride from Tokyo or something of the like to take over that spot.

Look at that **** and tube! Wow censorship of construction techniques from the early 1900's. LOL
And the interior of the box is insulated with asbestos (the white stuff)! Prior to the advent of metal fuse boxes they used wooden fuse boxes and asbestos was used as insulation to "fireproof" the boxes.

It's no wonder why John (the father) sent James (the son) to change the fuses when they blew. Every time those old wooden fuse boxes were opened and closed a fine asbestos dust was blown into the air. Poor James most likely died of mesothelioma at an early age.

Personally I like speedway but wish they would update it.
I would like a speedway of some sort. A more compact and futuristic multi level speedway would be great. The problem is that the current version takes up way to much space. They could get rid of that and make a small addition to FL as well as a cool new more futuristic track with elevation changes and electric cars.

You know, I don't know much about saving space, but I do think there would be merit to the idea of renovating it into a truly "tomorrowland" type of car experience ... with sleek electric cars and a cool new track. I could be open to ideas on that.

I agree... the Hong Kong speedway at least has a more furutistic vibe to gel with the surroundings... at the very least they should do something like this...upgrade to electric cars, add set pieces and decor to the track to make it more of a journey, not just a car on a road....

Even though my friends and I aren't planning on going on the Speedway on our trip next year, I really enjoyed it as a kid. I think most kids do- they can't drive in real life, but at Disney they can put the pedal to the metal (and try to hit the car that their sibling is driving ahead of them). It really needs to be updated though, and hidden from Fantasyland next door (idk why they can't put up some rose bushes from Alice in Wonderland to block the view).

If it is to be taken away though, a classic style Alice in Wonderland maze would look nice (one that stays far away from the Tim Burton versions).

forget the maze, give me the dark ride!! unless the maze is "in addition to" the dark ride... Disneyland recently revamped version is really great! A model for how all the classic dark rides can be updated.

As much as I love Beauty and the Beast, I'd prefer an Alice in Wonderland mini-land. Teacups, maze, dark ride. Perfect area.

Don't you mean a maze and dark-ride that can be re-themed at will to the Guardians of the Galaxy or [insert next-big-thing Marvel IP here]?

In fact, why go that far? Just re-theme the speedway to Guardians...

(Sorry, I couldn't help myself.)
(And, no, I would never, ever, think that is a good idea, in case Disney reads this and misunderstands sarcasm.)

I understand your opinion on the trees, but I think originally they served more as a buffer between the castle and MSUSA. So when you entered the park the castle seemed more off in the distance. As if you were on the outskirts of a kingdom.

The new hub is, as you said very reminiscent of the landscaped areas surrounding a real castle and I like that aspect. Just wish they could have accomplished both.
Indeed.

Thematically it's very much needed in my opinion since it was specifically designed that way.

I understand why the trees can't be as big as they used to be, but why on earth they can't be similar to those in Disneyland is beyond me.

Here's a mockup I did a while back:

It would help tremendously.

the second picture, missing the trees makes the castle feel closer, but not in a good way...it also makes it appear smaller... While great for fireworks at the end of the night, it looks too open...
Well, everyone should be encouraged by the fact that as soon as the public tires of the Castle projections the trees will be back. Until then, don't hold your breath no matter how much one thinks it "looks better". I don't care about the projections, but, I still think it looks better without them then with them. Trees I can see when I look out my window at home, Castles are rather limited in my neighborhood.

New Carousel of Progress signage is up and it has a new logo design with iconography of a what looks like a stylized overhead view of the carousel complete with wedged rooms and arrows showing the carousel in motion. Nice design!

Not sure if I like the mylar-like background; makes sign difficult to read. IMO either a darker mylar surface or a darker color on the typeface is needed.

There is one thing of interest. The CoP icon has SIX wedges. Does this hint at an expansion with a new theater room and show scene?

"You enter your 240-seat theater section in the first of its six positions, while guests in five other sections enjoy other parts of the presentation." http://www.yesterland.com/progress.html

The sign went up last month. And very nice it is.

It should have six wedges to represent the six seating rooms. This logo is actually based on the 1985 version.
