Tom Staggs at WDW

I would think that ground breaking on a project that got a lot of media attention like "Avatarland" (or Pandora - whatever) would come with similar amounts of media attention. I just can't see that if he was there to do the first "shovel" it wouldn't have been something that was big news.
A ground breaking isnt too exciting when they have nothing to show the media what they are breaking ground to build. No concept art. Not even a sketch.

Another reason why my instinct tells me that's not what he was there to do. They like to make a big "hurrah" out of things like that, especially in cases where it's not just them but them partnering with a "non-Disney" person. LOL

I just got an e-mail about a major announcement being discussed and wondering if I had an info on it. I know nothing.

Combining this info...

Posters in this thread claiming balloon sightings and CMM being closed off today.

...makes me think that there was definitely something Avatar-related going on, but that it most likely wasn't a ground-breaking. One would certainly expect Disney to announce design details or some concept art before starting construction (for anything not DVC, anyway). The delay in getting out any details/artwork probably indicates that they hadn't decided on a final plan yet.

That makes me think that what went on at AK was probably a final pitch and approval to Staggs and company. Close down CMM for security and privacy, send up the balloons to show height, show him where things would go, get the greenlight and final approval. That's just my guess.

Just a random person trolling you for info or a source of yours who has heard rumblings separate from this board wondering if you had head any details from other sources?

I have no insider knowledge, nor am I an expert in marketing/publicity, but maybe they didn't make a big to do about it for strategic purposes. Right now WDW seems to really be pushing the Fanatasyland expansion with new photos/videos/info being released every couple days. It might make sense to hold off on publicity for Avatar until after the FLE dies down a bit. If they push too much into the media at one time, excitement over WDW may sky rocket, but it may also soon after take a big plunge when they have nothing else to announce.

Ground breaking ceremonies are media events. Tom Staggs wouldn't fly all the way to Orlando to do a shovel-dig that wasn't a photo-op. And sometimes they don't even happen. Disney usually only does these when they want to flaunt to media and fans their impressive connection to some other company or individual. When Iger, Tom Staggs, James Cameron, and all the local media are in DAK, then we can assume it's a ground breaking.

It was actually my aunt saying there was a lot of chatter on the touringplans app. It sounds like it's not anything we're not already discussing.

What was all this nonsense about a "ground breaking." Is this the last thing you can latch on to or something? Also good job to all the "insiders" on never alerting us of stuff before it actually happens. I trust however that construction on Avatar has began.

Where??!! I want to see the official ground breaking announcement!

The entire point I made previous is that they no longer make announcements through the old media. Hello? Anyone home?

A ground breaking isnt too exciting when they have nothing to show the media what they are breaking ground to build. No concept art. Not even a sketch.

That is what D23 conventions are for. Make some reservations.

I always wondered why it wasn't announced at the expo
Considering the actual announcement had so little substance to it, I believe the story that it simply "wasn't ready". If I remember correctly, the length of the presentation was shortened by 30 minutes relatively late in the game.

What's impressive is that we don't know any more than we did 10 months ago, and now there is still speculation that the project isn't going to happen. I understand they wanted to get out in front of the story, but so far all it's done is agitate a fan base for 10 months.

Do you think they announced it that day because fans were mad about the lack of announcements at D23?

There was nothing substantial announced at the D23 Expo in 2011, then on Tuesday September 20th, they announced the Avatar/Cameron/Disney partnership on the Disney Parks Blog
And of the three minor announcements by George K for DL(return of extinct attractions like America the beautiful & Tahitian terrace, tea with your choice of a princess, and the new PFF) only one has started, one year later.
