Rumor Tokyo Disneyland Splash Mountain Retheme Discussion

Disney wants Splash erased from the earth.

TWDC will be paying OLC a LOT of MONEY to bribe them to erase Splash.

I am confident Tokyo will look at Tiana as an example of how NOT to replace it and come up with something really GREAT.
This is still modern WDI designing the retheme. I'm sure OLC will force them to design something better than TBA (the bar is on the floor), but it won't be an improvement over their Splash Mountain. I'm sure OLC knows this, which is why they've been holding off for so long.

Oh no OLC is 100% aware of the backlash that'd erupt from them bending the knee to the west and removing something that isn't even considered a problem in Japan. Song of the South's controversial history doesn't matter to a country that's so far removed from those issues.

I still struggle to see a world where OLC is forced to spend a ton of capex on a re-theme of a ride that is regularly drawing major crowds.

I still feel like this isn't something that happens till new Space Mountain is almost done, and honestly feels like it'd almost be part of an entire new Critter Country re-do ala their Tomorrowland one.

Wonder what the odds are that they're considering filling in their river and creating an entire Duffy area of the park. Considering those characters have zero presence in Land. Or if they're preferring to keep it that way for some reason.

The potential Splash retheme made the news in Japan: https://news.line.me/detail/oa-rp98938/i2goenenadxv

Will Splash Mountain be eliminated? Speculation grows. Racism issues are the background, but TDL management says "nothing has been decided"

There is speculation online that the popular attraction "Splash Mountain" at Tokyo Disneyland (TDL) may disappear soon.

It was also reported that the operating company was considering how to respond, as the location is based on a movie that has been criticized for racism. This time, the "rumor" has been rekindled by the closure of a shop in the same area, but what will happen in the future?

The film "Song of the South" is criticized for creating misunderstandings about black history

Splash Mountain is an attraction where you take an adventurous ride on a log boat and slide down a 16-meter waterfall. It opened in 1992, nine years after the park's opening, and is still one of the most popular attractions.

The park recreates the world of the 1946 film " Song of the South ," but in the United States, it has been criticized for creating misunderstandings about black history. A petition was even launched calling for changes to the settings of the two American theme parks that had opened earlier. In response to this, Walt Disney announced in June 2020 that it would change the setting of Splash Mountain

to "The Princess and the Frog," an animated film released in 2009 with a black woman as the main character . At the time, Oriental Land, which operates TDL , was reported to have responded to an interview with the Asahi Shimbun and other media outlets that it was "considering how to respond at Tokyo Disneyland." After that, a theme park in Florida opened "Tiana's Bayou Adventure" in June 2024, which recreates the world of "The Princess and the Frog." It has also been reported that the same attraction will open in a theme park in California within the same year. Meanwhile, on October 22nd in Japan, it was announced on the official TDL website that the "Hoot & Hurrah Hideout", a goods shop in the Critter Country area of TDL, which is based on the theme of "Song of the South", would close on November 30th. This led to comments of "sadness" and rumors of the demise of Splash Mountain once again began to spread.

A new attraction themed on a movie with a black protagonist?

"This is the right timing," "We should be prepared," "This could be an attraction for Tiana..."
Some in Japan have said that making an attraction with a black character as the main character is going too far, as it could lead to political correctness, or so-called "political correctness."

At TDL, the background music "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah," an insert song from the movie "Song of the South," stopped playing in the Disney Resort Line stations in August 2022. This time, the shops in the Critter Country area have disappeared, and there was even speculation that Oriental Land was creating an environment to eliminate the attraction. However, since Space Mountain, another of TDL's three major mountains, will close and reopen in 2027, it was rumored that Splash Mountain would be preserved until then. In response to an interview with J-CAST News on October 24, the public relations department of Oriental Land, the company that operates TDL, replied in an email that "nothing has been decided yet" regarding what will happen to Splash Mountain. Regarding the closure of the shops in the Critter Country area this time, they said, "We have not responded to any questions about the reason," and regarding future developments in the area, they said, "We have not responded to any questions regarding the consideration of revising or abolishing facilities."

A lot can change in 4 months. :)
Let's wait until April before writing off this rumor for an immediate change. April tends to be the month when OLC announces their next attractions and they've announced to shareholders their making big announcements this year about the future of the resort, both in April and Autumn

It’s not happening. OLC doesn’t want it, and WDI is tired wasting time on something they now realize isn’t going to happen. The official reason given is that there isn’t a budget for it (which is part of the truth).

I've heard OLC laughed when they were shown the finished product in Florida, since I assume Tokyo would have gotten a near copy of their retheme.

Tokyo has always wanted a non-Tiana retheme for theirs if their hand was forced to change it.

When Tokyo Splash meets the Big WESTCOT in the sky it'll be something that isn't a Tiana clone.

Me thinks before 2035. I doubt it's a huge priority for them. They wanna get the new Space Mountain and revamped Tomorrowland out and about first.

I know Splash is an all iconic ride, and it's reverred by those in TDL but hey, so was Space Mountain. They're always looking forward over there so I wouldn't be shocked if it happened. And I don't mean this as "Brer Fox and Brer Rabbit must be purged from this Earth" but more "sometimes a ride gets deemed outdated technically".

Yeah, we've got Wreck-it Ralph in 2026 and Space in 2027. Tokyo DisneySea's 25th anniversary and new shows likely in 2026. But sooner or later, that side of the park is next to be updated now Fantasyland and Tomorrowland have been

Yeah, they've got their plate full for what they need to do now. I'll be shocked if Splash gets any announcement prior to 2030.

“When” it happens, it will be because the building is compromised and needs to be completely torn down. Maybe 2065? Until then, OLC has no interest in changing it, and Disney has (finally) realized it’s a futile effort. By 2035, Iger will be long gone. Nobody will be pushing for it 10 years after they stopped. If they touch another classic along the lines of Space Mountain, it will either be Jungle Cruise or Haunted Mansion. Something that’s actually getting up there in age. Not one of the most modern and technically advanced rides at the park.

I’m just over here mad nobody saved ours. But it’s nice to know one still exists on the other side of the world. Hopefully I make it out to Japan one day.

I feel it'll either be updated/rethemed once Tomorrowland is resolved and their focus is on that part of the park. I know they wanna touch up the Bears down the line.

With Disney ending some of their DEI programs I think this may slip even further into the long grass. After Tomorrowland revamp I could see fantasyland being next maybe with Toontown

You're speaking awfully confidently all of a sudden. Did you hear something?

I highly recommend it. Great maintenance, no constant breakdowns, and a just a fun time overall. Not to mention park tickets are insanely cheap due to the conversion rate.
