Tokyo Disneyland Resort Expansion

It was written by someone who clearly doesn't understand the industry. The "Fantasy Springs isn't realistic" and "The book report rides contradict the 'active' rides of the rest of the park" were just plain stupid arguments.
Forbes articles regarding theme parks are some of the worst ever. It's a combination of leeching on to the recent criticism on Disney (except offering terrible meaningless explanations unlike the actual thoughtful ones of Poseiden Entertainment or the forums), doing some terrible armchair Imagineering, sourcing "popular fan posts" with 2 likes, and giving false information.

If Disneyland Anaheim never existed and instead MK, Paris or Tokyo Disneyland* was the original castle park, would it still be so easy to rank TDS higher than those 3?

You raise an important angle…….worthy of consideration

I’m sure I have some level of bias based on what you bring up but the question is how much bias is at play here

Right. Yeah I guess my question was - is TDS truly objectively better than the MK, Paris or Tokyo Disneyland, three castle parks that contain most of the whimsical, signature Disney parks attractions, themed coasters and things like the Rivers of America or are they easily dismissed because Disneyland exists.

Trying to be fair here
Magic Kingdom and Tokyo Disneyland have nowhere near the grand scale and detail of TDS. Aesthetically not one land out of those two parks is even in the same conversation as ANY single land at TDS. Paris, however, can compete with TDS’s grounds, details and architecture

And again trying to be fair
when it comes to rides I can see how others would value the Disneylands rosters above Dis Sea, just not me personally.

Sure but grand scale is only one part of the equation. Disneyland doesn’t have that either and many have DL ahead of TDS. I think the castle parks in general are greater than the sum of their parts. Just something about them that works between the layout, whimsy and attraction rosters.

To your point: if TDS was plopped at WDW, which it almost could be... I think the vast majority of guests that live in the bubble that WDW is the only Disney experience, would still probably call Magic Kingdom the best park. Though TDS would be a clear and very close second.

If it was in California instead of DCA, I think that there would still be a clear preference for DL. Perhaps more actual consensus amongst the 'nerds'. Though the gloating about how much better DLR is would take on a new level.

Magic Kingdom is dragged down in our more theme park nerd lens, because we are holding it up to the standards of other similar parks. But MK is a fantastic park, without that context. It's kind of the only one at WDW built properly. But also under-built, because it is so popular.

I think the Tokyo locals still think of their TDL as the slightly better of the two. Though TDL bothers me with the slurried textured ground. There's a reason they are basically slowly transforming TDS into a castle park redux.

Right. Well said. I didn’t consider it from that angle. If it’s true that Tokyo locals prefer TDL that pretty much proves my theory about TDS just kind of being the de facto second best gate amongst us “nerds” because it’s just the next best non castle park that’s not Disneyland. With that said, it seems that it very well may be the second best Disney park worldwide. I’m just explaining why a lot of people might come to that conclusion so easily. I’m just not so sure it’s such a slam dunk no brainer.

TDR local since 2020. I would take a day at TDL over TDS any day of the week.

And I would (probably) take a day at Magic Kingdom over a day at TDL.

I mean, it shakes out really definitively in attendance patterns. TDL still tends to run a few million ahead in the pre-pandemic years. So I'll be quite curious to see how much Fantasy Springs closes the gap after the first couple years of its excitement.

We may start to have a very different perspective around these parts with MK. Particularly if it starts actually seeing proper investment, as seems to be happening. I think further helped by being mostly park originals, as the projects seem to be from my awareness.

And maybe that just says more about our age and the kind of parks we grew up with but it just seems to me that a beautiful castle park with its variety, whimsy and typical attraction roster has everything it needs to make it more desirable than a park like TDS, no matter how great it may be.

I would 100% take TDL over Magic Kingdom any day of the week. At least OLC knows how to operate and maintain a park,

Me, too

Tokyo customer service, cleanliness, maintenance, operation schedules and cast enthusiasm compared to WDW’s parks has to be seen to appreciate.

Even the Cast Members aren't afraid of showing enthusiasm and excitement at times compared to WDW. Especially for various seasonal events and parades (such as the former Disney's Easter Wonderland Parade and Quacky Celebration Donald The Legend).

After a busy day at Tokyo Disney Sea, it now really feels like a really complete park with Fantasy Springs. This was my fourth visit to the park (once in 2013 and twice last year). The only thing really lacking now is the entertainment which could easily be rectified by bringing back the Little Mermaid show & Song of Mirage, and sprucing up Big Band Beat. Oh, and a proper water ride like a river rapids would have been wonderful in the heat! I also missed Sinbad this trip in its refurb.

Interesting tidbits with Hangar stage and Adventureland stage. It seems that TDR is prepping either a brand new show for both Theaters or the return of Party Gras and Song of Mirage.

Whispers are saying TDS will be getting a brand new Broadway Music theatre show in time for 2026. Still depends on the situation. Dockside stage and mermaid lagoon theater still no update sadly.
