Trip Report Tired, hot & grumpy- A tale of 2 princesses- COMPLETED!!

Hi everyone. We just returned late Saturday night from an 8 day stay at WDW. Our travel dates were 9/23-10/1. This trip included myself, husband Nick, our two girls- Sage (age 5 1/2) and Aria (just turned 1), and my parents. This was Sage's 2nd trip, her first was right before her 4th birthday. Link to that trip report if you're interested :)

On our last trip, we stayed at Pop Century and fell in love with the resort. The cleanliness, the friendliness of the staff, the big Disney statues, the Hippie Dippie Pool, the kiddie pool, it just felt like home to us. We originally booked this stay at Pop but when free dining was released, we had to switch over to All Star Sports. I was nervous about the switch, we all loved Pop so much, but we knew it wasn't really all that different. Our family of 4 requested a connecting room with my parents. We also requested first floor, thinking that would be easier getting in and out with the double stroller.

Travel Day
We flew out of Providence at 7:20am.

We were bummed there were no morning direct flights via Southwest so our flight did have one stop. There was no plane change so we had to stay on the plane for about 30 minutes while people got off and on. It made the whole flying process a little longer but overall it wasn't bad. This was Sage's 2nd flight, Aria's first. Both girls did great! Sage played, colored and worked a little on her homework. Aria played with her toys & books and was passed back and forth between my mom and I, and eventually, fell asleep. So that was nice!.

Even though there was a bit of a line for the Magical Express, the bus came quickly and we were loaded on. We made great time getting to Sports. We landed at MCO around 11:25 and were checking in at Sports at 12:45. No bad at all!
We were able to get both of our requests, connecting rooms on the first floor, and were assigned to tennis building 5. About 10 days prior to our trip, I ordered some things online from Walmart and Target and shipped them to All Star Sports- baby food, diapers, formula, wipes, breakfast items, etc. A few days before leaving, I got confirmation emails from both places that my items had been delivered. I asked about our packages when we checked in. I was told that within the past several months, Disney hotels have been so overwhelmed with the amount of package deliveries, that they no longer have the space to store them within each hotel. Instead, they have rented a facility off site and all packages are sent there. When you check in, it is then that your packages are attempted to be found. I was told this process could take up to 4 days! I explained that since my packages were confirmed delivered, I only packed enough baby items for that day. And we absolutely needed our items ASAP. They said they would do their best to have my packages to me by midnight.
For the next few hours, we checked out our room and the grounds, ate lunch at the food court, unpacked, and then went for a swim in the pool. Sage loved the kiddie pool at Pop so we started at the Sports kiddie pool.

A few things- we noticed a strong sewer smell in the pool area. It was really terrible and made us not want to even spend time there. The water was warm. Like, too warm. It was 90 degrees and super humid every day of our trip. I don't know how hot they keep the pools but it was not refreshing at all. I actually had to get out after a while because it was making me more hot. We spent a little time in the kiddie pool and then went over to the main pool to see if the water was any better. It was a bit better, but not much.

I'm not trying to sound like a scrooge, but after being so bummed to not be at Pop, all these little problems with Sports were not making us happy.
At about 7 that night we were getting the girls ready for bed and we still not have any of our packages. I was stressing out because I was hoping to have the diaper bag all packed for the next day before going to bed. But I didn't have the diapers and food we needed. I put the girls to bed (having my parents next door was so nice, I could go over in their room instead of sitting in the dark/quiet) and Nick went back down to the front desk to check on our packages. Between 7 and midnight, they were able to locate about 75% of our stuff. The only downside was that every time they found a box, they would call our room (waking the girls) or knock on our door (waking the girls). Needless to say, we all slept pretty terrible that first night.

We had a busy day planned for Saturday, a Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique appointment for Sage and some Fantasyland fun! More coming soon :)

Ok so first, the obvious.
We will never stay at All Star Sports again. Too many issues and poor customer service. I honestly can't imagine staying at a moderate after experiencing the bus at Caribbean Beach and unless we win the lottery, deluxes are probably out :) So that leave Pop Century! I will gladly stay there anytime!
Second, we will never go in the hot weather again. So May-October, we will not be in Disney! Maybe we sound like wimps but we don't care! When we came back, so many people were like, was it really that bad? I love the hot weather! Good for you guys! For us, never again.
I honestly don't know when we'll be back. We're thinking 4 or 5 years from now. We're hoping a big gap in between trips will help Sage anticipate it more and be more excited next time. We also want Aria to be tall enough to go on things with us. Obviously at this age, she didn't realize she was getting left behind so much. But at 2 or 3, she might be upset if she has to sit things out everyone else is going on.
We live in Massachusetts so we always have a vacation the 3rd week in April that coincides with Patriots Day. As long as Easter isn't the weekend before or after, its usually green on crowd calendars. So that might be a good time to go. The only down side is that flights in and out of New England that week are double & triple the normal price. We have a Southwest card though so Nick suggested we just save our points. And maybe that's our thing. We save our points every 3 or 4 years to use specifically during this time. Another potential time is in November. Our school system has a week in between Veteren's Day and Thanksgiving where the kids have 3 or 4 half days to accommodate parent teacher conferences. My neighbor is actually going to Disney next month during this time to lessen the amount of time her kids will miss school. So that's a possibility too.
Having free dining was a huge bonus for us and we really loved it. It was such a big money saver. I know the haters are gonna hate- the quality of food has gone down, the wait times have gone way up, its hard to get into certain restaurants. But for us, using the QS plan, we really loved it. We had some great meals too! Be Our Guest, Yak & Yeti Local Food Cafe, Columbia Harbor House- all so good!

Nick said he felt really bad for me during the trip that so many things went wrong. I am the big Disney lover of the family. Nick actually proposed to me in Disney in front of Cinderella's Castle so Disney is just in my heart. There's just something about walking down Main St, its like you're transported to a place where nothing else matters, you're in the Disney bubble, living the magic, living in a time and place where nothing can go wrong. So when we had to deal with so many bumps and grumps, I'll admit, it wasn't my dream vacation. I don't think a Disney vacation could ever be a total bust though and there are definitely things we will treasure forever. Our family just loves Animal Kingdom, and that day was definitely one of our best. Aria squealing with glee whenever she saw a bus or the Mickey statue at Sports is something I'll remember forever. The girls faces and excitement meeting the characters was awesome. Someday they will outgrow that phase. Sage's love of the Barnstormer. Watching Wishes from the top of the train station. Everyone's love of Mickey waffles :) So overall, not our best Disney vacation but definitely some great memories we'll treasure forever.
Thanks so much for following along!

I totally understand what you mean about not going back this time of year. I told my husband that I have no interest in going back September or October. The crowds can be crazy plus the heat and humidity can really take a toll on you. I don't mind the heat as much as the humidity. I can get through it here at home when it gets like that but all of the walking in WDW plus not much shade only makes it worse. It's not really fun. I would love to go back the first week of March. It was the most perfect, magical trip and I really do think the weather made it so. There was no humidity!!! I've enjoyed reading your trip report :)

Yes! Thank you! It really was the humidity. And it's one thing to walk around yourself but pushing a double stroller, carrying multiple bags, sometimes a child, it's exhausting and like you said, just not fun. Especially 8+ hours a day. And it wasn't like it was a gradual climb to the 90 degree heat and humidity. It was literally sun up to sun down. There was no break! Our first trip with Sage was perfect, (the week after Thanksgiving) mostly 70's, maybe a day here & there that peaked in the low 80's. We'd definitely do that again, we just have to consider school as the girls get older.

Thanks for reading!!

I have to give you props for getting through it and also thinking about your next trip. My mom and grandparents took me to WDW for the only and only time when I was 2 and they said never again. It was during the summer, Mom called it "hot as blazes", and according to family lore, I refused to be pushed in the stroller and Mom was the only one I would let carry me LOL. They never wanted to go back so I had to wait until I was an adult  An adult who needs to take afternoon naps because the afternoon heat/humidity wipes me out. I can only imagine the nightmare I was as a toddler!!!! Your children were angels compared to me lol.

Haha your poor parents!! You know, if this was our first ever trip, and if we weren't a Disney family there's a good chance we'd be saying never again :) Kind of like those families who go for the first time, don't plan anything, and then complain they couldn't ride any of the good rides. We've had many awesome trips though so I know a lot of this was just bad luck. I am a firm believer that Disney is for everyone, no matter if you're a baby or a senior citizen. I would still do a trip like this again with 2 little kids. Other than the weather, the only thing I would do differently is actually plan less. I wish I would have just planned the park we were going to, picked our 3 FPs, and then winged it the rest of the way. Less expectations and less disappointment if things weren't accomplished.

I loved reading your trip report I could relate in so many ways! Your girls are adorable! We were there from September 27th - October 4th with our twins who are almost 3 and it was way too hot for us and we also agree we will not go back at that time again. We have been several times the second week of October and never had heat like that so I was very unprepared for the heat. We had a great time just as you did but also agree we could have done a lot more if it wasn't so hot. I was sorry to hear your stay at Sports was not good, we were at Pop and I have to agree that unless we can afford deluxe some day we would only stay there! My biggest fear was one of the kids being sick and not knowing what to do, I am so glad you were able to confirm it was not an ear infection it must have been such a relief to know it was not.

Aw thanks so much for reading! I wonder if we ever crossed paths :) I'm so jealous you were at Pop! Haha! Have you done a trip report?
I would definitely recommend Centra Care to anyone needing urgent care at Disney. The van picked us about 30 minutes from when we called and everyone there was really nice. We are still dreading the bill but obviously you can't put a price on your child's health.

Hoping to try and write my first trip report, finding the time has been the problem!

It is time consuming! Although I probably go into more detail than others. I could only do it during the week while Sage was in school and Aria was napping :) I will definitely keep an eye out for yours!

Your girls are absolutely precious! I loved seeing all of your pictures of them. :) I also want to compliment you on all of the outfits, including your own! I'm huge on wearing a Disney shirt every day of my trips so I was loving seeing all of the different outfits you had! I think it's especially crazy when people don't dress their kids in Disney attire for the whole trip! I think my favorite might have been the BBB day when all 3 of you matched! :) Thanks for sharing!!

Aw thank you so much! Yes, I spent a lot of time planning the girls outfits :) Before we left, we organized our outfits by day, then I put the girls outfits in ziploc bags with the day of the week written on it. It made getting ready each day much easier. Sage always likes to choose her outfit based on what we are doing (like wearing her Inside Out shirt when we met Joy & Sadness, wearing her Merida skirt when she met Merida). My outfits weren't quite as well planned (isn't that always the case though?) I usually try to wear new Disney shirts each trip but this trip had a few repeats :) I always wear Disney shirts everyday, and obviously I was planning outfits for the girls, so in the months leading up to the trip, my parents looked in different goodwill stores and picked up a bunch for themselves. I was actually pretty impressed with their collection!
Thanks for reading and for your kind words! :)
