Hello everyone,

I have recently gotten contacts, and I'm having sort of trouble with taking them out, and putting them in. It freaks me out to do. Any tips, techniques would HIGHLY be appreciated. Thanks!

I loved my contacts, but I had to give them up.
The secret is to keep them moist. Make sure your hands are very clean. Moisten the lens with whatever solution you are using. Lean over and open the eye wide with your free hand. Gently place the lens into the eye. If its moist it will catch and then its in place. To take them out reverse...wash hands. If your eyes are dry put in some drops. Prop the eye wide open and with the side of your thumb and pointer finger pinch the lens very gently and it should pop out. It just takes practice. After awhile I could practically do it in my sleep. Good Luck.

With enough practice, you'll be able to take them out with no sweat: The trick is to make sure you're lightlty gripping the plastic and not pulling on the cornea underneath. It can be weird to get used to, but once you do it enough, you'll be able to tell the difference easily.

I used to use an 8 inch round mirror. Lay it flat on the table. The mirror helps because you can see where the contact is in relation to your eye. It helps keep it going straight to the center of your eyeball, and not to your eyelid.

I can give you more details if you want.

I forgot about that. That is how I was told to start...put the mirror on the table, lean over & look at what you are doing. It got to the point I could put them in when I was riding in a car, no mirror needed.
It really just takes practice (just like anything else new).

Sir Hiss...

To this day I still can't get them in

(I have extremely long lashes *bats eyes* and everytime I go to put it in...the lens catches on the lash...and it's like a KNEEJERK reaction and my eye will just NOT stay open!)

*le sigh*

Try placing the side of your pointer finger under the lash line when you hold your eye open.

To this day I still freak out when someone comes near my eyes, but I have no trouble taking a lash or a piece of dirt out. It HAS to be me, not someone else near my eyes.

Something else to be aware of...check your solutions frequently, they can become contaminated very easily and that can cause infections.

When I would put my LEFT lens in, I would use the index finger of my LEFT hand to hold my lower eyelid open, and use the index finger of my RIGHT hand to hold my upper lid open.

It can be done. You just have to mentally allow your eyes to relax, instead of "tightening up" when your fingers are near them. Once my eyes relaxed, and as tigsmom said, I didn't need the mirror anymore.

I would NOT recommend attempting to your contacts in standing in front of the bathroom sink. My wife used to do that, when she wore contacts, and that was scary - losing the contact down the sink, and how can you put a piece of plastic in your eye in a vertical position?

I wear cosmetic lenses..and it took me about 2 months to get used to putting them in..but now i can do it without even thinking about it.

I also suffer from long eyelashes, and let me tell ya...i have perfected my technique of holding my eye lids open with one hand (using the old scissor motion) and inserting the lens with the other.

..oddly..ive never heard of the whole "look down" technique..i do it straight on standing up facing forward

Dan, if that works for me (that technique) I owe you a round!

you wont be able to do it unless you relax
take deep breaths and try this: I usually put the lens to the side, or the bottom of my eye and let it slide itself upwards. Im not sure that made sense

That is what I meant, but make sure the finger is below the lashline so they are out of the way.

As for the whole looking down technique, thats how I was taught...place the mirror on a tabletop, lean over and watch what you are doing. I can also insert them standing up, but always found that tilting my head down was easier.

And where did all of you guys get those long lashes?
