Tipping

I know there have been several threads on this, and I have posted in a few of them, but I need my memory refreshed on something. When you pull up to the resort and someone takes your bags, is that the same guy that takes them up to your room for you? I guess what I'm asking is if I'm supposed to tip him right there at the car, or, if he is the same guy, tip him at the room? I had been thinking I'd tip him at the car before going inside, but the thought occured to me that he might be the same one who takes the stuff up to my room, in which case, I might look like a schmuck handing him money there at the car.

Of course, now that I think of it, that might be where I have to tip him anyway, because I plan to arrive a few hours before check in time and do that thing where I get my resort ID and then go on my merry way and come back when the room is ready. And I doubt he'll be there waiting for his tip when I come back.

And it's a buck or two per bag, right? Is a little carry on bag the same "tip value" as a big suitcase?

Our DME driver actually made the statement that if you appreciated the fact that he delivered you safely to your hotel, he expected to be tipped. Made me wonder, what if he wrecked the bus? Did that let me off the hook for a tip?

Do the DME drivers work for Disney or Mears? For some reason I thought the DCL and DME busses were run by Mears.

Go to bell services and give them your room number. They keep a record of who is dispatched where. If for some reason they do not have this information, you may not be able to get the tip to the correct person. If that is the case, I wouldnt worry much about it since its the way the system is set up. You can help that.

I was thinking about my question again recently because I couldn't remember what your answer was. So, a belated thank you, as well as another follow up question: speaking of the guy who loads my stuff onto the cart, am I expected to tip him as well? Or just mousekeeping and the guy who takes the bags to my room?

And one more question: do you tip mousekeeping on check out day? I would think not, since once you check out, you could care less whether they clean your room or not, since you won't be coming back there that evening. So, since I check in Monday the 23rd and check out Monday the 30th, I plan to leave a tip for mousekeeping Tuesday through Sunday. Does that sound right?

we just left a tip for mousekeeping on the last day, it was always the same people every day anyway (we saw them many times) and you could tell since the room was always the same way (towels left on the sink, soap on top and only 1 day did we have a towel creature (not sure what it was)

Maybe the only reason you only got a towel creature on one day was because the housekeeper thought that you were a cheepskate that wasn't tipping her.

Towel Animals are not directly related to tipping............

Everything is related to tipping in that if the person thinks they are being tipped properly, then they will go to greater lengths to provide exemplary service. If they think you aren't tipping them, then they may not go to such lengths, including not going out of their way to make towel animals. At least that's what I would think. If the housekeeper makes a towel animal on the first day (before you have had the chance to tip) but then comes in the second day, third day, fourth day, etc, and sees no tip, I would think that she would then be less inclined to do little "extras" like that if she is not receiving the customary gratuities.

Ya, that brings up another good question. If the guy who brings my bags to the room is not the same guy who greets me as I pull in (and loads the bags onto the cart), then how do I tip him if I check in early and my room is not ready? From the way it sounds, I leave the luggage, check in, get my resort ID, then go play somewhere until it is time for my room to be ready, then I go to my room and my luggage is there waiting for me. How am I supposed to tip the guy who did that?

I work at one of the resorts, and if you checked in and your room was not ready, we store it for you. But, we can't deliver the luggage to your room unless someone is in the room. So you would have to be in your room to receive your bags, unless it is Magical Express luggage. We can just send that up.

Also, it will be two different people that handle the luggage at the resort. The valet will take the luggage from your car/valet the car and store your luggage or keep it on a luggage rack to be delivered. The bellman is the person who delivers it to your room. They don't share tips, so both would expect to be tipped separately. Hope that helps!

So just to make sure I understand correctly: Check in time is at 3 PM. I expect to arrive probably anywhere from 9 AM - 11 AM. Check in, receive my key to the world card, leave my bags, and then go explore the resort, go to DTD, or do whatever. Then, when my room is ready, the guy accompanies me to my room, with my bags, and then I tip him on the way out. Is that right?

Actually that is really not true. Tipping does not guarentee anything, especially towel animals, and leaving a tip in expectation of getting one is just foolish. Tipping is a courtesy, plain and simple.

You could do it two ways. Once you find out that your room is ready, and they give you the room number, you can go to bell services and they will take you and your luggage to the room; or you could go to your room and call bell services from there. They will deliver the luggage to you in the room. Whichever you prefer.

No, nothing is guaranteed, you're right. And what I said may not be OFFICIALLY true. However, it just seems to me that it is logical to assume that since tipping is "a courtesy" as you say, then if the housekeepers don't feel that they are being left this courtesy then they will be less inclined to do extra courtesies for you.

We could have left nothing since:

* there were sunflower seeds upon check-in on the bathroom floor and they stayed there the whole trip

*our towels were just left on the sink; upon check in they had left an opened, used bottle of shampoo on the floor mat with an unopened bottle.

*the sheets were too small for the bed in our room

*the handle of our sink came off and mousekeeping just stuck it on, it wasn't screwed back on so we called the front desk and it still didn't get fixed until the next day.

Not sure what mousekeeping is suppose to do daily, but the floor was never vacuumed our whole trip. Just a good thing our DS isn't mobile yet or he could have gotten the seeds (which we would have made sure to pick up if he was, but since he isn't we left them to see if they would be cleaned up by mousekeeping) and anything else that got on the floor.

So considering all that, leaving a tip on our part was generous I think.

Sounds like it. LOL And I wasn't trying to criticize you for the way you tipped, so I hope I didn't leave you with that impression.
