Tipping the hotel staff?

Whoa! Didn't mean to start a clan war!
I appreciate all the input. I also make up envelopes and leave them. I must have missed the blue envelopes but may have overlooked them since I bring my own. DH and I have had this discussion many times and it is great to see what other people do as well. This helps alot!

It was actually a small blue card that was folded in half and standing on the table in the rooms. But another poster stated that they have not had those in a while. Using your well marked envelopes should be fine.

At POFQ...we didn't have the blue card this year. I do recall it from previous trips.

As far as the question...I also do 2 per day, and I do it daily. I don't discriminate by resort (deluxe/moderate/value). Not that it helped the quality of the Mousekeeping all that much (not something I'll get into)...

On the cruise ship, I tipped FAR more than that (over $125 for 7 nights)...but, ask anyone who's done the cruise, your Room Stewards will really spoil you.

WDW could learn something from that. There's no reason why this can't be replicated at the parks. None.
FYI, on our last cruise we asked about salaries for the wait staff and room attendant. They do not get paid. The only money they make is what is tipped to them. So if anyone cheaps out then those people do not get paid for the work that they did for you. Tip your service people please.

Then that means they still got a paycheck from Disney, but they worked on what would be typically called a piece rate. The more people they have to take care of on a cruise the more money they make, but they still get paid by Disney. Disney just happens to be going a more direct route to get them the paycheck.

We just got back and there were no blue envelopes at the Wilderness Lodge. We used the note pad in the room and left a note that we were leaving the tip for our mousekeeper with a thank you. It must have worked because they took the tip every day and gave us more washcloths than we could ever use (I counted 14 one day in the bathroom and there were only two of us in the room). I used to work in a hotel and know the housekeepers have a dirty job so I always try to make sure they know how much we appreciate all their hard work.

Can I ask how much of a tip you left? I think it is important since you have experience in the hotel industry.

We tipped five dollars a day (with two people in the room) since that is probably just below what they earn in an hour and we thought they might like an extra hour or so's pay. If I remember correctly from when I worked in the industry, the previous posters were probably close to average when they said a dollar per person. We made sure to leave a tip each day because it is very common in hotels to have a different housekeeper every day. I hesitate a little to say this but from what I heard from old coworkers you do receive better service (better cleaning, more frequent towel and linen changes, etc.) when you tip better and more frequently. And they do talk to each other so word will get around about how good a tipper you are.

Getting more when you tip well doesn't just apply to housekeeping. It kind of works everywhere. :)

I tip housekeeping very well because I think they really deserve it.

I tip daily. If you tip $100 at the end, whoever cleans your room that day get the $100 and anyone else who worked in your room gets nothing. If you want to tip the person who cleans the room, you need to tip daily. (Which is not to say I'm passing judgement on those who don't do it this way!)
