No...i made other CHOICES to not. I chose a different path. Our jobs and careers are ALL choices..no one controls our destiny but We the people. No one else is responsible for failure or not..Its ALL on us. so, no i chose to do 20 years in the Air Force..then Firefighting.
All life is a choice when it comes to success or failure.
Thank you for your service but I think the scotch is getting to you, because you are getting a bit off track.

Your Air Force career and firefighting careers are both honorable, but why do you need to demean those in the service industry (waiters, maids, etc)?

You seem to think that people wake up one day and say "HEY! I WANT TO BE A MAID WHEN I GROW UP! I WANT TO MAKE BEDS, CLEAN CRAP OFF OF TOILETS, AND HEY! I WANT TO WORK AT DENNY'S SLINGING GRAND SLAMS AND MOONS OVER MY HAMMYS AND SUPER BIRDS AND MILK SHAKES TO UNGRATEFUL FOOLS 8 HOURS A DAY!"

That is not what happens. People are not always born with opportunities at every turn. I am one of those people, and true, I was able to claw my way out of a childhood of total poverty and make a nice career for myself, but others are not necessarily able to connect the puzzle pieces, for whatever reasons.

So all the people on here saying "These people choose to be maids!" are way off track. They take the jobs that they can get.

Why is it such a reprehensible concept to throw the person cleaning up after you a couple of dollars every day???? Two bucks a day???? You're spending thousands. Why does it hurt your soul to help someone less fortunate than you?

Sheesh.

Buddy is repulsed and upset. Buddy is not having a happy night. He thinks we should tip..Buddy tips. Buddy is a special person. Buddy is saying words like "grotesque" Buddy is a person that isn't happy unless we all share equally in misery.
Buddy is a very happy person. Buddy is a good time, all the time. You know nothing about Buddy just like you know nothing about empathy.

Because its a choice. A choice to do or not. And to not is no more righteous or less than to tip. I don't care what you do with your money...why care what i do with mine. We are free people living in a Republic. I wish you well..Im glad you are successful in whatever you do. I would never judge you no matter what you tip or not..your life is your business. You shouldn't have to look to the outside for verification as to what you are doing is ok. So don't judge those who don't tip a maid for crying out loud.
By the way. Ardbeg Uigeadail Great scotch

Enjoy the scotch. I'm jealous.

Well kids, this has been fun (not). Every time I come on to a "tipping" thread, I end up dragging myself down a rabbit hole, and this one was no exception.

Anyway, have a good night.

Whoa whoa whoa. you don’t understand why people brag about not tipping? You are doing EXACTLY the same thing acting holier than thou that you tip. There is a ying to every yang on these threads. You guys think your only the only one right even though majority of the civilized world no longer tips and in fact, pays their employees a proper wage.

Want to know why I don’t tip percentage wise? It’s because it takes no more skill to bring me a steak than a piece of chicken. Why don’t I see any of you pushing for the tips to go the kitchen staff where your steak requires additional attention compared to that chicken. You all are a bunch of hypocrites. They make worse money than most of these mouse keepers. Yet I hear nothing about those people. The people you don’t see. So yeah, I’m a nasty person. But so are y’all.

Also, who cares if I am paying several thousand dollars for a vacation. Part of that several thousand dollars is the hotel bill. The bill that ensures I have a clean room. Don’t try that crap of trying to quilt trip me. It’s honestly sad that you are even trying. Your reasoning on why I should tip is the most backward thinking ever. Tipping should never be expected period. It’s a gesture of thanks for beyond normal experience. Not a guarantee.
What is a "Quilt Trip" ?

Just so you know, nobody cares if you eat pizza or anything, the reason tipping is different is because yes this is the land of the free, but it's also a place where tipping is practiced, and when you ignore it you are directly hurting someone. Is it a major loss. No but it still stings, I waited tables at a large times square restaurant years ago. You bust your butt and then sometimes you get left literally whatever change was in a person's pocket after they spent 200 dollars on lunch. They were almost always visiting from abroad, so they could play the didn't know any better card. But I won't argue with you further it's an American practice, and when you dont tip the mousekeeper or the waiter, just know it hurts that person. It doesn't matter why they are doing the job, if they are doing it and do it well, tip them, that tip when combined with others is putting food on thei families plates, or helping them buy piano lessons for their kids or a few more credits at college. Just consider that next time, to ignore it is selfish and dont get upset that someone is calling you that because there is no other way to put it. I'm done with this topic.

So to summarize:

1. No one has suggested that tipping is required.
Umm, not sure where your getting this at, but apparently every single one of you in defense of tipping have said you are a worthless individual if you do not tip. So basically your saying to be a human is to tip. Pretty sure that means its required to you people. Especially the post above mine. You guys cannot even keep your beliefs straight.....

Goodness what if they don't read Spanish?!?!? We have left both cash on nightstand folded, and also sometimes in envelope title MOUSEKEEPING. Never ever came back and found it left behind. :angelic:
I have left money by itself on the cabinet in front of the TV, and it wasn't touched.

Leave a note saying "Thank you!" under it, however, and it's gone!

It's an expectation vs reality here. If the norm is to tip $1-2 per day then the mousekeeping help expects a dollar or four, each room. If they don't get it, there is disappointment. If they get more, they're happily surprised. It's a relationship and as all relationships we have expectations and either exceeding those expectations or limiting them. Would I want someone I disappointed working in my room with all of my stuff? Probably not. It's not that anything bad would happen, these people are the most professional of all cleaning staff I have found anywhere. It just creates a little bad blood. That's all. Not into the bad juju.

Copied from WDW current job openings

Housekeeping Hosts and Hostesses receive a starting rate of $10. 50/hour.

Responsibilities: As a member of the Housekeeping team, responsibilities include, but are not limited to, overall cleaning of guest rooms, including stripping and making beds, vacuuming, dusting, and replenishing items such as linens, amenities and various supplies.

I would hardly call this a back breaking job and
Cast members at WDW which housekeeping are--- They are given all sorts of discounts (unavailable to the general public) on dining, park tickets, mechanize, resorts and Disney cruises.

Whether or not you tip is a personal choice and does not warrant name calling if you tip or not

This isn't if you want to ride with a helmet or not. Ever try to pretend if your mother was working the job? Just give it a try. It is hilarious that you think that the mousekeepers are walking around saying, well, I got stiffed again, but at least I save on that 5k cruise! You need a reality check pal. And yeah scrubbing floors, sinks and toilets for 8 to 10 hours, right thats not hard, and god forbid a hair be left behind you are going to hear about it from your manager. Again, don't tip if you don't want to but your rational is disgusting.
