Tip of the Marvel Iceberg

True, but there is something that bugs me about some random character from another genre and "line of thought" being shoved into a Disneyland. A park that's exactly that. A place for Walt's idea for a park to flourish, and for ideas new and old to be seen.

Marvel is not their idea to showcase.

Meh. We shall see. It could look amazing, be themed to the hilt, and I'll be eating crow.:lookaroun

Walt's park is DL. And one might include MK and EPCOT ... and you won't see Marvel in any of them.

Shanghai is a new venture for a multi-billion media conglomerate that is looking to grow its 'brands' in the biggest untapped market on the planet. But again, this is all blather about nothing at this point.

We just don't know ... I'm not sure Disney does either.

But there are plenty of Disney 'classic' characters that could be used in attractions ... be they from Jungle Book or 101 Dalmatians or Aladdin or Mulan or Lion King etc ... they're known. ... Then you have characters like the Muppets too.

Personally, they all are better-known than 99% of Marvel characters (fanbois aside). Just because they haven't been in recent films, doesn't make them 'old news'.
I am not all that sure how well some of these characters are being kept in the public consciousness. During my brief stint at the local Disney Store, it surprised me how unaware people were of items such as characters from The Jungle Book or 101 Dalmations. When pitching the DVD pre-sales, including the two mentioned titles, interest only caught on if I specifically mentioned them as "Walt Disney's animated classic [x]"

But this would require the risk of trying to reacquaint the public with these characters and it is far easier to use ones they already know. I do not believe Disney bought Marvel for the 5,000 characters; they bought them for the big players, the ones that have permeated popular culture.

Except Iger said Disney's gonna promote some of the lesser known teams. For instance, I can easily predict a Playhouse Disney series based around Power Pack.

I'd hope they wait a few years, especially until after the release of a successful Disney/Marvel film.

I don't think Marvel fits into any Disney park at the moment, its just not established enough as a Disney property. Give it at least few years, until they start to become synonymous. Then maybe it could tie in to the Disney theme park family and its tradition

A great point. But it won't take a major motion picture. I anticipate Disney will push a minor character on the Disney Channel or even create all new characters under the Marvel brand. And kids will want to meet those characters in the parks. They won't view the characters in the same context as adults. Much like trying to compare 60's rock to the current crop of Disney pop stars. It's completely apples and oranges. Whatever we think of it on this board is of little consequence. All that matters, at least early on, is what the kids think. And I fully expect Disney to have some VERY popular Marvel super heros and sooner rather than later.

IMO. :D

I don't get how Marvel Characters are automatically ruled out of a DL style park! Mickey got his Toontowns, why can't Spiderman get his own miniland?

I just know that Disney would do such a better job (theme-wise) than Islands of Adventure. I loved Super Hero Island due to my loving comic books, but beyond the AMAZING Spiderman ride and the Hulk Coaster - it all just looked so cheap. Storm Force and Doom's Fearfall were a real let down. The whole area was just flat cutouts of the characters stuck on shoddy looking buildings. Disney has the ability to blow us away!

Besides - massive number of what we now consider "Disney characters" already had substantial success before Disney bought the rights. And ignore those that were more folk/fairytale archetypes. Wouldn't we all think of Pooh, Tigger, Alice, Peter Pan, Mary Poppins and so many others "Disney"? And Star Wars is a part of the Disney theme park world - with a place in most Disneyland style parks (Hollywood Studios being the exception) where it seems to fit in perfectly.

With the exception of Star Wars, many of these weren't major franchises prior to being picked up by Disney. In order to appease the fans of the theme parks, Marvel will first have to get a Disney make-over.

Additionally, Pixar has become synonymous with Disney over the past two decades. In fact, most causal fans don't know the difference between what is Pixar and what is just Disney. Marvel on the other hand has existed as a free standing enterprise, and just isn't natural in a Disney park yet.

Marvel needs time, most likely years, even decades, in order for the public to associate them with Disney

Very interesting concept. The creation of new superheroes by a joint Disney/Marvel venture would certainly be more welcome to Disney Park fans, as opposed to forcibly throwing the Hulk or Spiderman into the parks.

Valid point. It would certainly help.

Spiderman 4?:lookaroun:hurl:
I would think they have two ways of going with all of this. One is the Universal model where you are "in" a comic book and it is all cartoony. This is also the line of thought taken with a lot of the Pixar presence in the park. Or they could follow the films and create real environments that make one question whether or not there are superheroes amongst us. I would much prefer the latter, as it creates a more convincing experience.
That would be preferable in a park like DHS, yes.
Put my comments on the record:

One (1) - "I'll Believe it when I see it"

And:

Three (3) - "Of course non-Disney things should be in a Kingdom Park too"

Two (2) - "They won't cause' of IOA."

Four (4) - "I agree."

Oh, and of course...

One (1) - "So is Your Face"

and two obscure references for the road.

Put that together, and you get the gist of my post.

That only works in DL because the attractions ARE themed to the hilt, and work perfectly thematically.

I honestly can't see them doing that in our MK. Or EPCOT. *shudder*

Honestly SS has been pretty spot on recently.

That depends on his sources.

Oh, and funny how no one here has mentioned that Steven Speilberg has re-upped his contract with Universal for theme park consulting through 2017.

So, much like Spidey not leaving IOA for WDW, neither is one of the greatest film makers of all time (not that he does much for UNI Creative anyways).

That IS news.

Indeed it is. I'm shocked no one mentioned here as well.

You don't wanna be like our old pal Conundrum and mindlessly bash DCA without so much as ever setting foot in it.

I thought the same thing when I heard the Muppets were coming to DHS (errr, MGM). They pulled it off wonderfully.

The theming for Superhero Island just looks cheap compared to the rest of the part. Kind of like IOA's version of Dinoland. Hulk is nice, and Spiderman is a great ride, after that it's all off the shelf rides. And like you said, plywood cut outs. For shame.

3rd Gate 3rd Gate!!!!!

Um, no.

Um, no.
I am not denying that it could be a really cool thing. I'm just anxious to see how they would do it, and with that level of quality.
