One of my absolute favorite guys to watch and listen to. :(

(CNN) -- Tim Russert, who became one of America's leading political journalists as the host of NBC's "Meet the Press," died Friday, according to the network. He was 58.

The network said Russert suffered a heart attack while at work and could not be revived. He had just returned from a family vacation in Italy to celebrate the graduation of his son, Luke, from Boston College.

Russert joined the network in 1984 and quickly established himself as the face of the network's political coverage.

In 1985 he supervised live broadcasts of the "Today" show from Rome, negotiating an appearance by Pope John Paul II -- a first for American television.

OMG I just saw this too  I loved Tim Russert, I thought of all the political analysts he had the most open mind and was a great journalist!

I could not believe this when I read it on yahoo. :( What a shock! I have his show on every Sunday in the background as I'm getting ready for church. In the same way that local news achors and Today Show anchors have become a "part our our household," so did he. My goodness... how very, very sad.

I just read about Tim Russert's passing. :( Of all of the broadcast news reporters in the U.S., I found Russert to be the smartest and most fair. In this day of incredible computer graphics technology, it was cool to watch him on election night with his whiteboard and marker going through the possible electoral vote scenarios. He seemed to genuinely love his job, too, and that made him all the more captivating to watch. He will be missed.

This description of Tim's style from Politico.com

Russert, who served longer than any other moderator of the longest-running program in television history, started his Washington career as a Democratic congressional aide and rose to become the gold standard of Sunday television news show hosts. He was a relentless interviewer, feared by officials and politicians, yet his show was a highly prized forum because he was so respected.

His interrogational interviews forced candidates to clarify sometimes purposefully vague policy positions, while his analysis helped define the conventional wisdom of the horse race – occasionally earning the enmity of the campaigns.

The bold is what I think defined Tim...he was expert at sniffing out "politi-speak" and dogged, while courteous, in trying to break through it.

If this thread hadn't already been started, I was going to start it....

Russert was from Buffalo (my hometown), and was still very active in the community, despite not living here anymore. He was very gracious and always made appearances and such here at home when he could.

I really used to love how during the Super Bowl years and in 2006 when the Sabres were in the Eastern Conference finals, Russert would take a few seconds to root for his home team. It made him human to his viewers, and endeared him even more to a hometown that adored its "son."

Our local NBC affiliate used the entire 5-6:30 news broadcasts to talk about Russert, and they spoke to Tom Brokaw as well....it was very fitting and extremely sad.

He will be greatly missed - who could forget him and his little whiteboard during election night?!

I loved how he was always fair, but always able to bring out the truth.

RIP Tim! :(

I am watching the NBC special on Tim right now and saddened.I never got much into politics until I started watching his Meet the Press show.He was straight to the point but would say things and smile and make you laugh even during a difficult topic.I will miss his wit and wisdom.Watching him on a show being interviewed by the likes of a Jay Leno you saw how much passion this man had for many things in life.MTP will never be the same for me nor will election night and his trusty clipboard.

RIP Mr.Russert you will be missed

A special edition of 'Meet the Press'

Tom Brokaw will anchor a special edition of "Meet the Press" dedicated to the extraordinary life of Tim Russert on Sunday, June 15.
-----------

What brought me to Tim was his fairness and asking the tough questions. He held everyone accountable and would grill them about their past statements. I will never forget the erase board during the 2000 elections.
