I remember when this figure came out last year to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the attraction. I think it helped demonstrate how poorly Disney was handling the ride even then. This piece could just as easily be a 'Song of the South anniversary figure', nothing about it sets it apart as a Splash Mountain piece. It should have had something iconic to the ride itself- the riverboat, the America Sings figures, or a recreation of a vignette from the ride. I mean, I still bought it- but it's a darn shame Disney wasn't able to merchandise the ride better over the years.

I think they dubbed it as Splash just so they didnt have to call it Song of the South and reopen the can of worms

Josh promised us a chance to say goodbye to Splash before the change occurred.. is it evil of me to hope Disneyland doesn't reopen anytime soon, so they continue to lose money, and ultimately end up cancelling the project due to insufficient funds?

Or, you know.. just cancel it and open Disneyland tomorrow?

I literally hope Disney is either:
1) Broke long enough that current leadership changes before their parks reopen
2) Sold to another company

Unfortunately that'd be up to the idiot board members, who thought it was a great idea to have $hapek as their CEO in the first place. And $hapek is too cozy with Iger, which is a lose-lose situation.

I'm still bitter over how they removed Captain EO tribute without warning. They said the Guardians preview would be temporary but it never came back.

Sometimes Disney just doesn't care and a movie preview is better to them than an attraction featuring the world's most famous entertainer.
Like 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and Rocket Rods, which are totally just closed for refurbishment and will be reopening in a few months.

I had an interesting conversation with a friend last night who knows some people in WDI, or is a friend of a friend type stuff. A lot of what she said lined up perfectly with the rumors we've gotten from insiders on here- WDWPro's stuff was spot on- but she did add a tidbit or two that I hadn't seen on here.

There was a hope among some in the company that the election and a new president might help things 'calm down' in regards to Splash/Song of the South being in the spotlight. And with Walt Disney World actively fighting the retheme due to the thematic issues it would cause, which would negate planned savings on duplicating the attraction's set pieces on each coast with both coasts footing the bill for attraction development plus getting two 'new' rides to market for each resort- this retheme is very much not a done deal. Not to mention the additional cost of having to retheme Critter Country into TianaLand, which would then necessitate developing an attraction to replace Pooh. At a time when Disneyland has no revenue and WDI's workforce and budgets just got slashed.

And again, very very little actual development work has been done on this retheme.

There are some in Disney who hope enough time goes on that people forget about the rushed announcement that was made a few months ago and Disney can quietly shelve the idea for the time being.

Honestly, any chance this thing is shelved is perhaps the only positive rumor we've gotten in a year.

I mean, it makes sense. A Biden presidency would most likely put an end to the racial tension narrative in the media which would calm people down around the country. Not that it’s all just a “narrative” and Trump certainly fans the flames but I’m not sure he fans them as hard as the media. So this in conjunction with Disney’s financial situation for the next few years make it more than possible that this project will get cancelled or at the very least shelved for a few years.

Thanks so much for giving me some legitimate hope that this will get cancelled. I theorized that they couldn't justify doing it now, and I am glad that some of the insiders are thinking the same thing.

Once Disney does become more financially stable, they will want to invest in actual new attractions to increase attendance numbers instead of overlays which never have much of an impact on attendance.

Fingers crossed...

Ya think there's any truth to the rumor that Disney orchestrated the petitions to retheme the ride in the first place?

Not sure that will happen. The next time there is an incident, it will flare up again. BLM was founded during the Obama administration and there was plenty of demonstrations as well.

If they cancel or delay a changeover it will be financial IMO. I believe that even if they put it on the back burner, Splash's days are numbered. No need to go back to root issue of the changes, but Disney wants their attractions to be based on movie and TV shows they can promote. They simply cannot promote Splash's source material in any way.

I think you’re right about Splash’s days being numbered, especially now that people have learned that it’s based on Song of the South.

I would love and prefer for Splash to stay, and I can definitely see this project being shelved. However, I don’t necessarily believe that means Splash is saved in the long run.

We’ll see.

Disney never tried hiding that Splash was based on Song of the South. Song of the South is written on the Riverboat in the finale, and they even used to say the ride was based on Song of the South in the ride description on the Disneyland App. They also mentioned it was based on SOTS during The Imagineering Story.
