Thoughts on Monorails; Why They're Dirty, Not So Magical

Though personal trips to Walt Disney World for me began in the mid 1990s, I have noticed a steep decline in monorail 'show quality' in this period of time. Though this argument may have been made, hear this one out.

As a frequent visitor of these parks, I have begun noticing slight declines in upkeep throughout each park. In regards to our monorails, their exteriors often seem quite unclean, however, their exteriors are no match for their interiors.

I understand, these monorails have been in service for quite some time, however, certain upkeep issues intrude into guest experiences. Many monorails have developed quite a terrible stench, due to heavy usage in combination with air conditioning condensation that develops mold (apparent near bottoms of compartment walls). However, little remedial work has taken place, as it seems it has been deemed too costly or time consuming.

Though each of these issues intrudes into guests positive experiences, it bothers me to a higher degree that guests pay exorbitant room rates to stay near certain resorts which have monorail service, sometimes unaware that this service no longer warrants such high rates as it is subpar in quality.

To wrap things up, these issues stem back to a corporate culture of cost-cutting, a culture choking out everything that made this vacation destination the "Most Magical Place on Earth".

Well, now that you've seen how I view this issue, I would be delighted if you would share your thoughts on this topic too.

I don't really care, but, you will be bombarded very shortly about the fact that there are active threads already addressing the Monorail and the perception of some of the public. I'm thinking it might be a good idea to check through the existing treads and save a duplication of effort. What you are looking for has already been beaten to death there.

Only one thing about the futuristic monorails...And I'm sure I'm not the only one...Just as you step in...Take a deep breath...and...

The monorail is no longer an attraction like it was when I first visited in the late 80’s through 90’s.
Due to the volume now it’s putely seen as basic transport in Disney’s view much like the buses.
The buses have never been different or an experience but serve the same purpose.

I’m not disagreeing with you but the the fact they serve high end resorts doesn’t count for much as we all know you have to spend plenty of $$$ to stay in the Yacht club and there’s no special transportation, just the buses and boats to get you from A to B.

Can’t see them doing anything about it anytime soon and a massive overhaul would cost them too much as it’s seen as basic transport at best it seems.... :(

And this is the first time I’ve ever commented on a monorail thread so suspect this may of been said elsewhere by the sounds of it :cautious:

The condition of the monorails is one of the few things that I agree with the perennial pessimists about.
Their condition is a disgrace, and inexcusable in my book.
The condition of the NYC subway cars - which I ride 5 days a week - is far better.

Even the T in Boston which I ride is far cleaner and better maintained than the Monorails which at one time were one of my favorite attractions especially the EPCOT line where early and late in the day you would see deer and other wildlife below you. Plus the ride through EPCOT. I could and would spend several hours each trip riding them and I have all my 'pilots licences' from both coasts.

You should have seen how Vegas maintained the Monorails they got from WDW when it first opened....
