Your brother-in-law's co-workers are entirely correct.

It is this seat, where the girl 'victim' (here a female CM) is sitting, that gets emptied:

Here you see the full elevator, going up:

And here you see the same elevator, going down. Note the guest in the middle of the back row (the female CM seat) has been emptied mid-ride!

What's more disturbing is that the guy in the Yankees shirt has become a women.

No, it's powered by Rod Serling's ghost.
I thought it was powered by the person taken from the middle seat in the back row (which would explain why they don't get taken on every ride. There are only so many giant hamster wheels in the basement, so they need to wait until one of the people can no longer run, then they just make a call to one of the CMs that they need another)....and we come full circle.

For a so called "dark ride" it's rather well lit :/
Unless you mean dark as in "creepy." By that extent then yes. Yes it is. Especially the knock off version ._.
Actually here's the textbook definition of a dark ride...
A dark ride is an indoor amusement ride where riders in guided vehicles travel through specially lit scenes that typically contain animation, sound, music, and special effects.
There's a handy dandy non-complete list of dark rides here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_ride#List_of_dark_rides
It lists these Disney attractions as dark rides:
  • Alice in Wonderland
  • Buzz Lightyear
  • Dinosaur
  • The Haunted Mansion
  • Indiana Jones Adventure
  • It's A Small World
  • Living with the Land
  • Monsters, Inc. Mike and Sulley to the Rescue!
  • Mr. Toad's Wild Ride
  • Mystic Manor
  • Peter Pan's Flight
  • Phantom Manor
  • Snow White's Scary Adventures
  • Spaceship Earth
  • Splash Mountain
  • Toy Story Midway Mania!
  • Winnie the Pooh
This list is very incomplete though....

Ah, didn't think it quite qualified since most of the ride is actually pretty well lit. Just simply thought it was a boat ride with animatronics ^^;

What nobody else has heard of the murdered miner at Big Thunder Mountain? Look closely in the bat cave.....there's a skeleton of a miner on the floor with the business end of a pickaxe through the back of his head, and a stake-claim ticket still clutched in his hand. It was put there as a tribute to POTC....
