In case you can't tell, I'm really bored. Being the history geek I am, I figured I'd start an This Day In History thread. I'm sure you guys know what to do, just post something interesting that happend on the date you post the fact, starting a year ago today, October 12, 2006 and all the way back.

Now...
...On This Day In History, Elvis and the rest of the cast and crew travelled about 100 miles east of Los Angeles to the town of Big Bear in the mountains for shooting Kissin' Cousins.

While in the army, Elvis got the first of many letters from his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, assuring him he was doing everything: "to keep your name hot over here".

Interesting!
I've never heard this story.

I remember something else about this. From what I remember, he was delivering a speech when he was shot. He got back up, claimed, "It takes a lot more than THAT to kill a bull moose!", and finished his speech before receiving any medical attention.

As I recall, when I heard about this on The History Channel, I think the speech was actually around 2 hours or so as well.

October 15th, 1971: LIFE magazine presents an article on the newly opened Disney World in Florida. A photo of 1,500 Disney employees, posing in front of Cinderella's Castle, is featured on the cover. The issue also includes a pull-out poster (sponsored by Eastern Airlines) of the new Magic Kingdom.

Wow... I was thinking 5 minutes to wrap up, tops.

I went and double checked, it was a 90 minute speech he delivered after being shot and they never removed the bullet because it posed no threat to his internal organs. It passed through a 100 page speech and his glasses case before entering him and managed to only be a minor wound. He didn't want them to attempt to remove the bullet because McKinley had died in surgery after he had been shot.

Today in Disney History:

October 18th, 1967:
Disney's 19th animated feature film The Jungle Book
has its general release. Rudyard Kipling's classic tale of
the jungle is the last animated feature personally
supervised by Walt Disney (who passed away during the film's production). Directed by Wolfgang Reitherman, the film features the voices of Phil Harris as Baloo, Sebastian Cabot as Bagheera, Louis Prima as King Louie, George Sanders as Shere Khan, Sterling Holloway as Kaa, Bruce Reitherman as Mowgli and Clint Howard as Junior. The song "Bare Necesseties," written by Terry Gilkyson, will be nominated for an Academy Award.

On This Day In HIstory...

In 1926, Chuck Berry is born,
In 1961 West Side Story Opens,
and in 1968 John Lennon and Yoko Ono are arrested for drug possession.

And in Elvis History...

On October 18, 1956, Elvis was booked on charges of assault, battery, and disorderly conduct, together with 2 others. Apparently Elvis stopped for gas at a pump station and was surrounded by fans. The man from the gas station didn't liked that and told Elvis to move on. There was then a fight, bada bing, bada boom, the man pulls a knife and WHAM! My boy Elvis gives him a black eye.

And in Elvis History...

Elvis picked up 12 TCB-pendants in Beverly Hills from Schwartz and Ableser, Fine diamonds and Jewelry.
These pendants were made from a design sketched by Elvis and Priscilla. The 14 karat gold charm consisted of the letters TCB over a zigzag lightning bolt. Over the years many explanations were given but its meaning is:
