Things "taken " from room??

We had some strange things lifted from our room during a stay at the Wilderness Lodge about a year ago. One day during our trip I realized I was missing a bottle of lotion. And then when we returned from our trip I realized I was missing a t-shirt. I'm usually pretty organized, so I don't think I misplaced them or forgot to pack them up, so I just assumed they were lifted from our room. I thought it was an odd choice of things to steal though. I never mentioned it to the management at the Lodge though, because I really had no proof that they were stolen and also because they were such inexpensive items.

Other than that, I've never had anything stolen and we've visited WDW about 11 times in the last 10 years. I always put valuables in the safe or carry them with me.

Edit: Funny, I just noticed that the t-shirt that went missing is the one that I'm wearing in my avatar. :)

He He ... I have a shirt just like that one...he he I found it at Disney ...he he :lookaroun

This kind of pilferage exists even at home.
There's someone in our dryer who keeps stealing socks, but just one sock from the pair.
I'm convinced of it.

You THINK you're the only ones that have a key. What makes you so sure that the renters before you didn't make a copy of the key? They could be staking out the house just waiting for the opportunity to take advantage of the vacation traveller.

Because it's actually not a key, but a code that is changed each time the home is rented (like a safe lock).

We always try to "hide" our valueable stuff like our laptop.
The camera is always w/ us, so we don't have to worry about that.
I also don't take any expensive jewelry on trips...I am always afraid of losing it more than someone taking it.

Stolen on the day of my wedding!

That's right... my wife and I had a Disney Fairy Tale Wedding, and the night before our ceremony, my brand new in-the-box tuxedo shoes were taken out of my room at the Grand Floridian. Unfortunately for me, I did not discover this until 3 hours before our wedding! Of course I was frantic, doing everything possible to try and recover the stolen shoes through the proper channels, front desk at the Floridian, all the offices of the housekeepers, etc... not the way I wanted to start my wedding day! My father was completely prepared to let me wear his shoes, but I still felt bad, because no matter what, one of us was going to lose out a little bit.

30 minutes until the ceremony and they still hadn't found my shoes... but they managed to save the day anyway! They went to costuming and got a pair of tuxedo shoes that the tap dancers use on Main Street USA. The soles were designed for soft-shoe dancing, but hey I wasn't complaining! For my troubles I was able to keep these shoes (which to me is actually pretty cool!) :)

Well last nite while on another (yes I know gasp) site when I came across a thread on how someone's 2 laptops and cell phone and camera we're stolen out of their room at Saratoga Springs over the weekend..Now this puts Such a pit in my stomach, well one we're going there in couple weeks and two does this happen more often than we think?? I know the person and numerous others had said that there were phone calls to the room while they were there but when they picked up nobody answered on the other end....LOVELY!!! And from what they said Disney really did'nt do a whole lot..So does this happen that often? Anyone ever have anything "taken"from their room?? And also what do you do with say your portable dvd players or laptops and such?? I know there is a safe but they are really not that big... I know we never (cross fingers and knock on wood) had a problem , always left change out and dvd players, but what do you do with them?I really can't see bringing them into the park with you...Any insight would be great!! And yes I know crime happens EVERYWHERE , I know disney is not an exception, would be nice though!!
Makes me glad to be in an RV in Fort Wilderness next year.

1. Never bring anything valuable that you don't need with you to a hotel (I leave the definition of "need" up to you - in my case, I need my cellphone for various reasons whenever I travel; when on business travel, I need by laptop but on personal vacation travel I don't so I don't bring it. I don't travel to WDW with any jewelry other than a couple of pairs of earrings and a watch, but at other times I do....)
2. Lock up anything valuable that will fit in the room safe and take the key with you. You'd be surprised how many times people lock things in the safe, then leave the key in the room!
3. If you have valuables that won't fit in the safe, have them locked in the hotel safe. This also holds true for things that are extremely valuable even if they fit in the room safe. Yes, it's a pain, but it's the safest route. All suitcase locks are easy to break - I've done it several times (when I left the key at home ) without tools, and it takes just a few minutes. With the proper tools anyone can get past any suitcase lock in seconds. And the room safes offer a moderate amount of protection, but are not foolproof - there can be an extra key or two to those floating about.

Last year we were at OKW and we came back to the resort and found out they had checked another family into our room and the other family called the front desk to have my stuff removed. I had my laptop, camera, wallet and most of our personal belongings laying out since we had just checked in ourselves and were late for a ADR @ Chef Mickey's. Normally I lock everything up. Nothing was stolen, except for my room and this was the day before Thanksgiving and there were no rooms on the property.

Need I say I will not stay at OKW again.

So how did Disney handle that? Did they give you something to make up for it? How did they explain it?
That's a rather serious error.

Tks.

Back in 1998 we had a bag of prescription/OTC meds and a digital thermometer stolen from our room at the Contemporary. The hotel staff couldn't have cared less. My lesson from that is use the safe and trust no one working at the resort.

They found us another room, but after I thoght about it I did not want to continue my stay at OKW so I asked them to find me a room in another resort. I was told there was no more vacancy on property. I later found a room in the Beach Club and called the manager to arrange. I spoke to them the next morning and the manager of OKW told me that the person I talked to was incorrent and there was no room and I would have to stay at OKW. I flipped out and got back on the phone with central reservations and found a room in CBR and this time got a reservation number and held the room with my CC. I went to the main desk at OKW and handed the manager the ressie # and told her to take care of it. She looked in the computer and looked back at me and said the ressie number was no good. I pulled out my cell phone and proceeded to call central reservations with her standing there and she said hold on I found it. She then finally took care of it. BTW this is a short story and I ma leaving out alot of the bad details that actually happened.

To answer you first question: NO I did not get anything except my room moved to another resort (Finally) which is actually a large downgrade to what I had. I have sent letters to just about everyone I could and only had one response which was by E-mail and was not satisfactory. I was not looking for anything monetary, just want to know that a proceedure was broken or a glitch in the room assignment software. I just wanted to know what the heck happened!!! So I could feel comfortable going back.

This was not as Disney, but we have been assigned to a room where some else was already staying. It took a minute to realize that there was someone else's stuff in the room. The hotel was not overly helpful, but they did find us an empty room. I am just glad there was no one in the room at the time...

Not to burst your bubble, but it's pretty naive to think you and the landlord are the only two to have the only access code. I'd be pretty sure that they have a cleaning service which has the code, plus those people assigned to cleaning the house. I'd be willing to bet there is a maintenance company that also has the code plus those workers assigned to that facility.

Unless this house is owned by a personal friend who can guarantee you have the only codes, I wouldn't believe that the two of you are the only ones that could get in while you're staying there.

Most of the time I take a laptop with me. However its not mine, it my jobs. I use it every so often to check eMails (its not a vacation to me if I come back to work on Monday with 300+ emails to answer) It also comes in very handy to store pictures from my camera on.

I have never had a problem with things being stolen. Somtimes I leave it out, but most of the time it goes away and into a drawer.

Next week I will be WDW-Cruise-WDW and I am debating taking it or not. there will not be much email to catch up on (its a weekend trip) and on the ship my cellular modem is not going to get a signal. But, I plan on taking lots and lots of pictures. It would be nice to be able to clear the memory stick each night, but I don't think its worth the risk. I am almost positive the laptop will stay home this trip
