Trip Report They're coming over ... and we're not going to WDW??

Ok, some of you (I specifically remember @riverside and @Laurenciaa) asking if I'd consider doing a trip report. I'm more of a "behind the scenes person" but as so many of you have entertained me with amazing trip reports, it would be really impolite of me not to give back to you all. I'll do my best, because I hadn't thought of doing one before I left, so I didn't take any notes, and there are some huge holes in my pictures...

Without further ado:

WHO: Me, my DD C (14), my sister, and my BIL.
WHERE: POR Royal Rooms
WHY: Tiana is one of my absolute favorites!
WHEN: 28 December - 4 January

Some background:

Ever since our trip over in 2009, just before C started school, we've always combined a trip to visit my family with a trip to WDW as well. And each trip has been with my sister and my BIL. That year we went around Easter-time, because it was what worked best with my work schedule. And then of course C was in school, so I tried to be "correct" and take her during the summer holidays, but it was just too oppressively hot. Not just in Orlando, but up and down the entire East Coast where we visited family and friends. So I said NEVER AGAIN to summertime visits. And until she started junior high, I had a bit more leeway taking her out of school for a week or two outside of school holidays, citing such things as wanting her to experience unique cultural celebrations when we went back one year for Thanksgiving (huge cultural fail: C doesn't care for turkey, does not like stuffing, and does not like pecan pie!). On another trip, I was able to take her out a week before the Christmas break, allowing us to go to WDW around 15 December. But then C started junior high and things got complicated. Even taking her out for a day created all kinds of problems (and this was only for us to get to DLP early enough to get our bibs for the 5K race - held on a Friday evening - during the half marathon weekend). Luckily, that year (2017) I bundled my "request" for that one day and 2.5 days after Christmas together with a reason the school really couldn't refuse. So I said never again at Christmas-time...

But back in January-February 2019 I started to think about spending Christmas 2019 at my sister's (well, at one of my sister's). But C had exactly 2 weeks vacation and I did not have a reason the school couldn't refuse, so I told my sister we were coming for Christmas but given the fact that it is the busiest, craziest time at WDW, I thought we should skip it this time. My sister agreed. Since she and I were always the two planning/pushing for our trip to WDW, I figured that was the end of it. But then on Skype calls I'd hear my BIL say "they are really coming over but we aren't going to WDW"? And C would chime in occasionally with a "yeah mom, really?" So one day when it was just my sister and I on Skype, I mentioned that it sounded like my BIL really wanted to go ... and he's someone who rarely expresses emotions/desires. I told her it would be crazy, and there would be NO WAY I'd set foot in a park on New Years' Eve. But if everyone was willing for a more laid back trip, then I'd be ok with planning one. And so it was decided.

But in order to go away on vacation, we first had to bring Indiana and Caraïbes to kitty camp. And because I know you like kitty pictures:

This is a very rare picture of Indy. 1) she pretty much refuses to look anywhere into a lens (telephone, camera, or computer monitor) and 2) she is almost in constant motion so you have to take about a dozen pictures to finally get one that is only semi-blurry. This one is a unicorn: she is looking directly into the lens AND she is not moving!

Indy.JPG

This is Cara. Pictures of Cara are a dime a dozen. Cara will look directly into a lens. And while she may have her 10 minutes of running around like a crazy cat, outside of those 10 minutes she just sits/sleeps (or goes to the door and meows loudly for us to come home, even though we call out to her that we are in the living room).

Cara.JPG

Once the kitties were safely delivered to kitty camp C and I could actually pack a suitcase without constantly removing one or both cats. And I was officially on vacation. C still had one more day of school. And what does a 14 year old ask when you driving home from kitty camp just about the time all grocery stores are closing? (And before you think it was really late, grocery stores close at 7 pm weekdays. 6 pm on Saturdays. They are not open on Sundays.)

"Mom, do we have any bacon?" No, we're leaving tomorrow after school. We don't have much of anything in the fridge. Why?. "Because we decided to do a breakfast in class tomorrow morning, and I'm supposed to bring something typically american". Ummm, not sure what to tell you kid, because even if you ran to the grocery store when it opens at 7:30, you won't be able to cook bacon and get to class by 8:00. "Oh. But what should/could I bring?"

And this is my problem why??? Because I'm a mother. And I love my daughter. And I was probably feeling guilty about all the times lately I stayed in the office until after 7 pm so that I could try to get things off my desk before the end of the year... How about pancakes? I'm pretty sure we have some Aunt Jemima at home.

I made most of the pancakes ... starting at 6:30 am ... on my day off. In C's defence, she did get up early, and she did make some, but I realised that there was no way she was going to get to school on time if she continued making the pancakes. So I made most of them.

And after school (and after my hair cut and getting my nails done), we called a taxi and C and I were finally off. Don't let the smiles fool you. I am a VERY nervous flyer. I just "pretend" I am relaxed. C on the other hand loves flying.

Waiting for our first flight to Paris:

And finally the next morning for our transcontinental flight:

UP NEXT: After an atypical Christmas celebration, we make it to Port Orleans Riverside

Love that you got to do the beignet fun run. I know there are several resort runs, but I've heard that one is particularly good. Cute that you get the mask on the beads as race bling. I'm sure my family would also do the same if I ran one of these. I'd be meeting up with them at the room afterwards.

Oh yeah...also a big fan of the hoodie!

It is good - and not just for the beignets. I had seen pictures of the bling, and I thought the mask would be cardboard but it’s made out of sturdier material (particle board maybe?) I don’t know about the other fun runs, but it’s pretty short, and the grounds are beautiful. I was out for drinks Friday night with my bestie and her husband; we‘re looking at going to WDW together in 2021, and I’ve told them we will have to look into which fun runs we can do.

Glad you got to do the fun run, hope you ate the beignets while they were still warm, yum. They’ve upgraded the bling since we did it a few years, used to just be a medallion, love the mask.

We did eat them still warm and they were delicious... but I’m very glad that I never found time to go back over there for more, because I wasn’t running enough to burn off the calories they would have added 😉

So after my Fun Run and the beignets, I grabbed a quick shower because we had plans. Each time we go to WDW we make reservations for the Gospel Brunch at House of Blues. This trip would be no different ... or would it?

When the reservation window opened for getting tickets to the Gospel Brunch, my sister took care of getting them for us. If you have never been, you choose your seats at the time of your reservation - which is important if you want to make sure you are seated at the table with a view of the stage without having to turn your chair. But then near the end of September my sister received an email from the manager, informing us that there had been a "venue buyout" and she offered to refund our tickets for the 10:30 seating and provide us for discounted tickets to the 1:00 pm seating. It was clear to me that we weren't going to be allowed to go to the 10:30 show, but my sister was less clear (or maybe she wanted to see if refusing the offer would mean we could still go?) and she wrote back telling the woman the 1:00 pm show would not work into our schedule. The 10:30 seating was definitely not an option, but 1:00 pm didn’t work well for us, given that we planned to go to Hoop-dee-doo later that day. I was mostly hesitant about show really wasn’t going to work for us.

Then, out of the blue (no pun intended!, the manager wrote back to my sister at the end of November, offering us a 50% discount on the new Bayou Brunch being offered on the other side of HOB from the Gospel Brunch stage.

So, quick shower finished, we were walking towards the bus depot around 9:30ish. We didn’t have a specific time we needed to get restaurant, but we were hungry. We get to the bus depot and it is packed! Shortly afterwards a Disney Springs bus arrives .., and no one is moving – either towards the bus or parting ways to let us get to the bus. We finally push our way through (having asked and found out that people were waiting for other buses) just as the bus is starting to pull away. A snarky CM gets the bus to stop and the driver, thinking he was funny said “didn’t you see my big bus here?” to which we answered yes, but we had trouble getting through people who didn’t want to get on that bus. Shirley status confirmed, we did the rounds of all the other bus stops, and not a single person got on at any of them. At the last one, the driver told us he had been asked to go back to the first stop to pick up another family. Turns out they too had been at the bus stop at the same time as us, but with young kids it had been even more difficult for them to try to get through the crowds. The snarky CM apologized to the family and slightly louder than under my breath I said she should have been apologizing to the bus driver for not doing her job organizing the bus stop. Luckily, it was the only bad experience at Riverside getting on a bus; other CMs were better at organizing and crowd control.

Soon we were at Disney Springs and finding ourselves in front of HOB:

Although I didn't take a picture of the long line of people waiting to get into the Gospel Brunch, from the looks of the t-shirts, I'm pretty sure it was bought out by a high school choir group participating in the Candlelight Processional.

The food and the music made for a delightful start of our trip. The music was a mixture of Disney and other songs, but all given a jazz twist (we arrived to a Beatles song, and the jazz twist to it threw my DD for a loop).

The pictures make it seem really dark inside, but I didn't have that impression when I was there - but then again, most of the artwork was done in bright colors.

The ceiling above the middle was white plaster portraits of musical artists:

The band:

The trombone player was also the singer.

Soon it was time to waddle out of there and say goodbye to HOB until our next trip. My sister, BIL and I really enjoyed this brunch and said we would maybe choose it over the Gospel Brunch. The food is very similar, and the fact that it is not a show makes it easier to come and go (not just for getting the food, but deciding when to leave the restaurant). My daughter said she preferred the other, but I take that with a grain of "I'm a 14 year old and must have my own opinion" salt ;)

So until next trip:

People had clearly woken up and started their day by the time we left the restaurant at noon - Disney Springs was pretty packed!

Up next: More Disney Springs fun.

That was quite a disaster that bus line! Glad you finally made it to DS and enjoyed your Brunch!

Luckily it was the only time like that; other CMs had other ways of dealing with crowds/pressure, but this girl, not so much. She was a college program CM, and while many of the CPs I encountered were wonderful, there were a couple like her who were not (the kind who believed they were “better” than the job they were given so only did it half-heartedly). There was one a day or two later who was fantastic at organizing the bus stop - did with a smile and got everyone to follow along.

That brunch looked great!! I will definitely have to go there sometime. As I was reading your bus saga I was trying to figure out why you d
didn't take the boat but then it hit me that they don't start running until 10 :banghead:

I hope you took it on the return though🤞

It must have been about 9:40-9:45ish, and on the monitor it was saying “use boats“ (watercraft maybe) but my sister said she had looked earlier and it said the boats didn’t start until 10.

The bus came just a couple minutes after we had arrived at the depot, so in that respect it was all good. It was just trying to literally push people out of the way in order to get to the door that was a bit frustrating. And I’m an experienced public transportation user - I take the bus nearly every day and only take my car when absolutely necessary - so I’m usually really good at pushing my way through crowds and getting on the bus. I think the problem at WDW is that most (many?) people aren’t public transportation users - several times my DD and I commented that our buses at rush hour are way more crowded than WDW buses ever got.

As much as I like the depots at Riverside the South is a total nightmare during prime times & very rarely is it organized even with a CM “directing traffic” so to speak. They almost need to have queues to keep it more organized & fair but I guess it would kind of take away from the look of the resort. BTW—don’t hate me—I’m not a public transportation user;):hilarious:

The queue line is one of the main reasons, besides price, why I like the value resorts. It makes me feel less anxious being in an actual line for a bus then at just one bus stop with sometimes people vying for position for getting on the bus first.

One morning a CM (CP) did create lines and it worked really well. Oh, and another morning there was a CM that looked a little bit like E!

I would never hate someone for not being a public transportation user. I happen to live in a city where it is really well developed and for most places I have to go, more convenient than driving. I used to take my car to work and I would get home before I decompressed from work and traffic and I would find it really difficult to have to be a mom right away. And then because of some roadworks I started to take the bus because it was a pain to get in and out of my garage and I realized that it added about 5 mins to my morning commute but I gained 10-15 mins in the evening AND I was able to decompress on the bus and be ready to be a mom when I walked in the door 😀.
