Trip Report There's Something About Mary...and it's called DRAMA!

I think it's time to get this thing started...hoping it will help my mood and sanity levels. For those that missed the PTR (http://forums.wdwmagic.com/threads/lawdy-lawdy-look-whos-turning-40-ptr.867181/) - the early pages should help you catch up on the bulk of the big details, and for those that missed our problems from day 1 of our trip (http://forums.wdwmagic.com/threads/how-not-to-start-your-wdw-vacay.873853/ )...well, it kind of speaks for itself.:( I am going to try and keep this as upbeat as possible, but we have a very long road ahead to fix things...so, please bear with me as I vent in between some of the magic. :)

September 18th

I left work early on the 18th so I could pick up the girls at school and have them with us when we took our dog to get boarded. This is our Daisy Doggy...
074.JPG

What's really funny, the pic above was taken with Sammie's Fisher Price plastic kiddie camera!

After getting the dog situated at boarding, we went home, had some dinner, and the heavy duty packing started. I'd actually started packing my things on the 17th, but now it was time to really focus on the girls. I let them sleep in the guest bedroom that night so I could pack all of their stuff without keeping them up...i.e. so I could pack all of the surprise outfits without spoiling anything.;) It was A TON of packing, but I finished up around 1am. I had thought about setting up the outfits and bags in the guest room for the reveal, but Sammie got up to use the bathroom right around that time- soooooo, I decided to wait until just before the big reveal.

September 19

I guess I got close to 4.5 hours of sleep (good for the night before a travel day)...and at 6am, it was finally time to set up and reveal the big secret. I got everything set up and then DH came in to help me. The video I took is pretty awful and sleepy girls don't make for really good surprises, but this is the vid I took and I swear...they were REALLY happy.

You can all now probably appreciate what it's like getting these two up for school each morning.

Actually, the girls were super quick to get dressed once it really sunk in what was going on. They were even good with posing for pictures before hitting the road...
9924749463_db7fbda884.jpg

We loaded up my SUV and hit the road...sadly, we wouldn't get far. The accident took place about 2.5 miles from our house. I really don't want to rehash all of the scary details, but when we realized we'd all be able to walk away from this horror - we had to decide if we'd continue with this WDW trip. While the girls' initial screams and cries were from the accident itself, they morphed into cries that they wouldn't get to see their grandma and grandpa. We usually try and visit every 3 months, but we pushed it a bit longer b/c of this trip. It was for this reason DH and I decided to push forward with the trip even if the odds weren't in our favor. I guess I just figured getting everyone to "the most magical place on earth" could be therapeutic. Don't get me wrong...I love that the EMTs and lead sheriff on the scene were super lovey with the girls :inlove: - they really needed something super positive...so, Disney it was!

So, after I took care of the most important initial phone calls, I got Southwest on the line (at the scene of the wreck) and started working with them to rebook the outbound flight. We were yelling over ambulance sirens and traffic, but after about 20 min, we were rebooked from our 9:15am departure to a 3:55pm departure. They also said DH could ask for a blue card for pre-board (we were now in group C after paying to be in group A on the original flight)...while it's gotten better, he had some leg pain that day and was limping from the aches. The timing also worked well since it gave me time to go to the collision center, talk to the various insurance companies, etc. My wonderful MIL was also kind enough to pick up DH and the girls from the scene. This enabled him to get his car and she was able to love on the girls for a while until we were ready to regroup and get travel plans rolling again.

While our flight out of Houston was delayed close to 3 hours due to weather and mechanical issues (not helping Kendall, who was now terrified that the plane would crash), but we got off the ground a little after 6pm and we were on our way...

9924756273_281dbbc4e9.jpg

Sammie sat with DH on the way to FL-- with Pooh, of course...
9924657494_bc33e6d210.jpg

I had Kendall...
9924579545_9f192d5e78.jpg

...and we spent the entire flight doing this big word search on her tablet.

9924651404_e1738fda8b.jpg

We flew into terminal A and DME is in terminal B. It was after the girls' bed time, so we opted to just get our baggage. Soooooo, we went down to terminal A baggage and then lugged it over to DME in terminal B. Thankfully, Kendall has overcome her fear of escalators, so minus losing her shoe for a while on one of them  we were in good shape.

I think the CMs manning the DME entrance could read all of the stress and worry on my face, because they promised me pixie dust and magic from that point on. :D We had our Magic Bands on at this point, but I had my vouchers out so in the interest of time and sanity, they just used those. They directed us to the line for AKL and while we were let on the bus right away...we were so late that the bus was accommodating a number of resorts from various lines. Still...Kendall and I wound up with this prime spot!

9924661334_a5f37400c7.jpg

I swear, I got choked up when I looked up and saw the screen...like that "we're really on our way" moment.

9924619886_389c274cb7.jpg

It took a while for them to load up the bus since they were waiting on people to come in from all of these late or delayed flights, but it wasn't long before we were off.

OK, I was going to post tonight, but I'm getting error msgs trying to directly upload pics from my computer. Sooooo, looks like I'm going to start the long process of uploading to Flickr. I'm going to try and get all of the 20th uploaded over the next few days, so that should be a good start. In the meantime...if you care to read my current vents about the accident nightmare...feel free.

START VENT

So, DH and I are finding out that very few drs here are willing to see you or willing to take your medical insurance if you want to get checked out after a car accident. I have legit medical insurance from a big name provider that is through my employer, we are not seeking heavy duty pain meds or anything like that...we just want to be checked out. The dr we tried to see yesterday wouldn't even take my HSA card...she wanted cash since it was for an accident. SHADY! We've got appointments tomorrow with another physician- hoping this goes better. At least there were no issues having the girls checked out by their pediatrician and thankfully Kendall's minor back pain appears to be muscular rather than spinal. I'm also ticked about the police report. I know it can take up to 2 weeks, but since this woman is disputing my statement, nobody will do anything (not even inspect the damage) until they see that report. I tried to expedite things by calling the police station today. I was told the report was ready and I could come by, fill out some ppwk, and get a copy of the report. Turns out I have to fill out ppwk, wait for them to print the report, wait for a call to come by, and then pay for the report. I guess I'm just mad that I wasted time after work that could have been spent with the girls doing all of this. Even more frustrating, the guy at the desk didn't know if I could fax the form to the fax number at the top. UGH!!!! And lastly, the guy at the collision center called twice- wondering why nobody has come by to look at my vehicle and I again had to tell him that we're in limbo waiting on the police report. Oh...and while I'm happy I'm in a truck for a rental...I really don't like it. The engine isn't as powerful, the cabin feels cramped, it doesn't have remote keyless entry, and the steering/turning radius isn't to my liking.

END VENT!

On board! Great start to the report after a not so great start to the trip...
I echo everyone's sentiments and am glad things worked out!

Onward!

Thanks! I was hoping to post more tonight, but it doesn't want to cooperate with direct computer uploads, so I'm going to have to start the Flickr upload process. I'll hopefully have more to post by tomorrow night.

Did someone say cakes?

Yes, yes we did :) I've got a ways to go before posting on those, but there will be cakes.

Ah, the good old Mickey towel on the bed. That's always a splendid sight to see after a long trip.

Anyway, I think you made the right call. I would think that it was definitely not an easy decision to make. But I mean, a car can be replaced. Time with your family, on the other hand, cannot. They always say you should never take anything for granted. It was a devastating blow with the wreck granted but a lot worse could've happened.

I look forward to reading the rest of the report and seeing the pics. For some reason, I don't read/comment on trip reports as much as I want to but I'm coming around with that!

You're right...not an easy call, but it felt we made the right call. None of us knows just how much time we have and emotional health can have just as much of an impact as physical health. So, that really helped guide me.

I go through phases where I don't comment as much on reports...for various reasons. Either way, I appreciate you reading :)

Good gracious! It sounds like your nerves are going to need another vacation! Praying for an expedited resolution and all around healing!

BTW: Venting is extremely therapeutic!

I know! I started looking into one today - even if off in the distant future. Thanks! Yes, the venting helps.

The other driver is contesting? On what grounds?

Sucks about the insurance thing, I've heard that before. Usually if you don't have a GP you see on a regular basis, it can be a pain. Hopefully someone can see you soon though. And glad to know Kendall is good.

The police suck at expediting things, I swear. I had a report for harassment by an officer, and it took two months to get through my local department. It was a nightmare.

Stay calm, it'll all work out!

I don't know how you contest plowing into the back of a stopped vehicle, but she thinks I was changing lanes erratically- forcing her to hit me. I at least have good news on both areas today which I'll be posting on in a moment. :)

An update on my vent...

DH and I both got into a dr today... a good dr, with a very reputable organization. They put it through on my medical insurance and DH and I both have prescriptions for muscle relaxers. I really don't like being on prescription meds, but if it helps loosen things up to lessen the long term effects...so be it. It should also help me sleep. I declined anti-anxiety meds...I mean, as on edge as I am, I'd really like to get past this naturally.

We also got the police report today. It's too late to fax it off to the insurance co, but first thing Monday morning they will see that my statement matches that of the police. It sounds like the guy I spoke to at the station yesterday didn't have all of the info, but I got a call this morning- literally within a couple of minutes of faxing my request- saying that the report was ready.

Now let's hope these 2 positive happenings signal the beginning of all of this progressing in our favor.

And I did upload about 200 of the 650 pics from the 20th last night, so I'll have an update a little later on this evening. :)

Glad things are starting to get worked out.

The good news for us is, the muscle relaxers could help make for a great trip report. :D

Yeah- I'm kind of wondering whose muscle relaxer is going to be better in that regard.:p DH was given a prescription that he can take up to 3x a day. I was giving a slow release prescription that that is only taken once per day, but can also be doubled up if need be.

Before I get too far ahead of myself, I wanted to explain the title of the report. As many of you know, I am a big Mary Blair fan. I am always in awe of the mural in the Contemporary and her art for Small World is my absolute favorite (although, I love the stuff for Alice as well). My 40th bday cake design was to pay tribute to her beautiful work and I’d even booked a 1st night ADR at Cali Grill so I could see all of the Mary inspired décor and reproductions. While you’ll have to wait on the cake details, you can probably guess by now that we didn’t make it to Cali Grill. There’s actually a bit more to that story…

About 2 or 3 days out from the trip, I got nervous that weather delays might keep us from making our 7:20pm ADR. I also worried that a, 8:55pm ADR at a signature spot on a travel day was probably a mistake with 2 young children involved. So, I dropped my ADRs. The new plan was to head to MK to get our tickets, meet up with @Jessica Meier , and pop into Cali Grill for a few drinks at the bar before heading to Kona for a 7:05pm dinner ADR I was able to book last minute. I figured this would put us in great position to just watch Wishes from the Poly beach after dinner and get the boat back to MK to catch a bus to AKL. So, obviously – none of my wonderful first day plans happened. I felt so sad texting Jessica about our issues since I was really hoping we’d be able to meet up.

There will be other nods to Mary Blair in the report + a number of Mary Poppins’ nods too…so, I felt the name was fitting…even had it in my head before the trip. I just wasn’t expecting the drama tag on the end.

One other trip side note before I delve into day 2… As some of you know, Sammie is 4 and Kendall is 7- and both are pretty tiny for their respective ages. Still, with Sammie being close to 5, we decided to take our chances and make this a stroller free trip. I’d like you all to know that it was a success!!! We had a few tired feet complaints here and there…but I am proud to say that this WDW loving mom now has 2 kids who are OFFICIALLY 100% STROLLER FREE AT DISNEY!!!!! And man is it liberating!!! It also made the room feel much more spacious than our room at WL felt back in 2010. Of course, it also helps that I decided to fully unpack- I NEVER fully unpack, but it made a big difference (that, and bagging the girls’ respective outfits).

My stress is pretty overwhelming right now. I had to play tooth fairy the other night for the 2nd time in less than a week…and well, let’s just say I forgot, and then made a really poor recovery (forgot to take the tooth). So, with stress and muscle relaxers- this could become a very interesting report.
I think I also forgot to tag people... @ThatBrunette @figmentfan423 @real mad hatter @Jessica Meier @mishel635 @bethymouse ---and I'm sorry if I forgot anyone else that hasn't already popped in. My brain is just on serious overload. Doin' my best :)

OK- so, back to Sept 20…

The girls woke up shortly after me and were eager to check out all of the sites from our balcony.

We had quite a few love bugs out there, which don’t bug me from my FL days and the few we see in TX, but the girls took some time to adjust. Ultimately, we sat out there for a good 30 min just taking pics and observing animals and taking in the peace.

My 3 favorite animals in our section of savannah (Uzima) were these guys (and no, they're not doing what you might think they're doing)…

Apparently, they’re Somali Wild Donkeys and they’re critically endangered. We initially thought they might be zebra-ish in nature due to the striping on their legs, but confirmed later on that they are most definitely ultra–rare donkeys. The AKL fansite says they are brothers and were added to this area back in June. They were a real riot to watch since they were constantly “horsing around.”

We had no zebras or giraffes in our section of savannah, but we could see some peaking over the fence from a neighboring savannah...well, the giraffes that is.

Feeding time? Or clean up?

9961103385_6d369b4954.jpg

I still don’t know if I’d pay full price for a savannah view room, but I don’t know if I could stay at AKL again and not have a savannah view. I did, at the last minute, decide to do online check in and maybe that helped since I requested a room near the lobby and also had the option of requesting savannah views on 2 different savannah areas. Obviously, I got my savannah view and we also weren’t too horribly far from the lobby. We were in 3467, which just meant walking straight back through the lobby….hanging a right and another right…and just head a short ways down that hall. So, a super quick walk without even needing any elevators.

OK, back on track….

The girls were getting antsy and were begging for pool time. I’m not big on eating before swimming (and they were sure to point out me changing my own rules:rolleyes:), but I wanted them to get some food before we hit the pool. Soooooo, we headed down to the Mara. My big camera is a Canon DSLR, and while it’s an entry level model, it still doesn’t go to the pool- so camera on my phone would have to do…in other words, not getting my usual flood of pictures. DH wanted more sleep, so he promised to meet up with us at the pool at some point.

I must say that I was REALLY impressed with the options at the Mara. This was a really welcome change after my disappointment with YC and BC counter service. Kendall got really mad at me b/c I was standing back from the line trying to decide what to order…told me I was doing it all wrong, but I hate being that indecisive person holding up the line. Kendall couldn’t make a decision, so I ordered her Mickey waffles with bacon. Sammie just wanted bacon:hilarious:…but she too got Mickey waffles with bacon.

9925753945_18ec72f989.jpg

I got the bobotie platter. I loved the bobotie…could have eaten a whole plate of that…but the pap and chakalaka weren’t my thing. I’m not fond of polenta or grits, so I wasn’t sure if pap would be my thing…and it wasn’t…but that’s not the pap’s fault and I’m very big on trying new things. The chakalaka was tasty, but I think I’d prefer it with meat or rice.

9925912843_631326a83c.jpg

As you can see by the pic below, the girls weren’t overly hungry for waffles, so we took a snack back to the room. I guess at least we had a fridge (just thinking back to all of the fridge drama a little while back)...

9925831254_913ec0bcbc.jpg

After breakfast, we took a quick walk over to the Uzima Pool and set up our stuff on some lounge chairs near the zero entry section. The girls are still working on their swimming skills, but put on some life jackets so they could have a more enjoyable pool experience.

9925824524_3a353ba5af.jpg

I also decided to join the girlies in the pool. Mind you, the temps were still very warm (although not insanely hot IMO- upper 80s/low 90s in forecast), but it felt really cool that morning…well, at least walking into the pool. The girls played for some time…even made a couple of friends. DH eventually joined us and also froze in the water until he got used to things. We ended up having a nice chat with another dad in the pool about crowds and such. At some point in all of this, the lifeguards came on duty and the slide opened up. Sammie was raring to go, but one problem- she couldn’t find the darn thing.:in pain: I got out of the pool and had to track her down…she was over by the hot tub and the flamingos. OY! Once she found the entrance...She LOVED sliding!!! She took another 3 or 4 trips down the slide before we got everyone out of the pool for lunch. Kendall, on the other hand, was just too fearful of going down the slide. She’s timid to begin with, so it may have just been her, but you’ll hear me blaming (or at least partially attributing) the accident for a number of her fears this trip.

Coming up...our trip over to Kidani Village for lunch...

Yay for your stroller free trip!! I can't wait for our first one in June. I know I will miss having the basket under the stroller to carry things, but I definitely will not miss pushing them through the crowds and having to park them. AKL is so beautiful! I really want to stay there one day. Can't wait to read more!

That's sounds like a real pain. How can someone that rear ended you not blame herself if you were already stopped? She probably doesn't have insurance that's worth a hoot and she definately doesn't have any morals. I would say it's time for an attorney to go after this lady. Good luck.

The first time we went to WDW as a family, Alex was 6 and Sterg was 4. Day one we were pushing them around MK for 10 hours - got back to our room and Val and i collapsed on the bed while the two little buggers were jumping up and down around ( and on ) us.

Next day and for the rest of the trip - no strollers. By the end of a long day in the parks, it was the kiddies that collapsed on the bed. :) Good for you for going that route!

Pictures look sharp so far and enjoying all the details! AKL is beautiful.
