You're right. The company that produces the fertilizer has stated that it IS NOT explosive.

Yep, both the Walt Disney Company and the Orange County Sheriffs dept. called the company to check if it was explosive, and they were told it is not a hazard (as in its non-kaboom manure).

Wouldn't be great if someone stole it thinking it was the explosive kind, only to find out that it was not!!! Suddenly they are stuck with all this fertilizer!

Anyway, I hope the "authorities" are telling the truth (as opposed to just calming fears). I hope it truly is not explosive.
I am sorry, but that was my very first thought!

If it was cow manure, or some other animal manure, the crooks probably would have figured it out right away (stinky-poo). There are many different type of chemical fertilizers, but there are only a few types that use the base chemical needed to create an explosive, as It-hambone commented on in his post. It is only the base: other chemicals need to be added to create anything dangerous.

It sounds like some landscaper found a way to save some money on a project.

Mmmmmmm, sounds like Disney needs to employ a decent security company, or at least, one whose staff remain awake during the night :p

Interestingly enough, the area of Disney where this stuff was located only has random security patrols after the day shifts go home. It is so remote that most folks, unless formerly employed by Disney and had access to the area for job purposes, wouldnt even know where to find it.

Inside job - Definitely
Disgruntled employee - maybe, maybe not

Unfortuantley, there are always people who will take advantage of an employer if they feel they can get away with it. Are they disgruntled, probably not anymore than anyone else. Ever take home some copier paper or other office supplies form your employer? That is also theft. Its just not worth prosecuting. These folks just did it on a bigger scale.

I believe the area it was taken from is near where all of Disney's greenhouses and horticulture areas are...you know, where they grow those cool bushes that look like dancing hippos and the like. Anyway, this area is not restricted and is freely accessible if you know you way around Disney property. There is a little road near the gas station and bus carwash next to the Disney Speedway in front of the TTC. If you follow that road, it takes you way back to where all the greenhouses and the wastewater treatment plant are and eventually it becomes the back entrance (cast members only) to Animal Kingdom.

BTW...any first year chemistry major can tell you that ammonium nitrate (fertilizer) mixed with fuel oil (diesel) will make a very powerful explosive commonly referred to as ANFO. Its not a secret. Most commercial fertilizers now add ingredients that limit the explosive force and also make it easily traceable back to the manufacturer to make things easier to track down for the FBI and ATF.

 I can't believe that that much could be stolen! Wouldn't somebody notice the truck carrying out that much fertilizer? Plus, you would think that it would take some time to load all of those bags? I think it's time for Disney to increase their security.

Everyone has to keep in mind the size of Walt Disney World. The Disney property itself is twice the size of Manahattan. Now add in the area immediately surrounding the property and you are talking about quite a bit of land and perimeter to protect.

1. You can't possibly watch everything all of the time. Does your city patrol every inch of their jurisdiction every minute of every day?

2. The amount of products consumed at WDW is astonishing. Trucks come and go all the time. In many cases delivering to more than one location on property with a single loaded truck. Does your city stop and inspect every truck and its cargo manifests?

3. How many police officers does your city have? I would venture to guess that Disney has more security and other folks watching the property than most cities.

Unfortunately, as much as we would all like to think otherwise the world is not inherently safe and humans on occasion do things that are wrong. Disney World is safer than most places its size on the Planet but still not without its faults.

How much security is enough? They could have very easily instituted vehicle checks post 9/11 for everyone traveling onto the property. How about forcing everyone including guests to weardisney designed uniforms while on property that make it hard to conceal anything?

Thos are just a couple of ideas. Where do you stop? Bomb detectors and metal dectectors at the turnstiles? Body searches? How much freedom do you take away in the name of safety? More importantly, would any of it be effective?

I agree.
Another thought--You guys keep calling the security guards 'Dumb'...What would you be calling the 'man in charge' of security if he overly secured a pile of manure? Cameras, check-points, and three security guards on duty all the time around a pile of rotting dung..Wow, forget the poor little kids getting lost in the Magic Kingdom, a pile of sh*t needs much more of our man-power!

Seriously guys, it's fertilizer. It isnt explosive. I bet it was a very mean-spirited prank type deal, alot of people where laid off...Stop being so hard on the security guys. They do darn good job..this is the first real problem I've heard about in awhile
