Trip Report The Worst Week: A December 2013/January 2014 Trip Report! *COMPLETE*

You all know the week I'm talking about.

The week that all the guidebooks and fan sites warn about...the parks are packed, Soarin' hits a 4-hour wait, and there are phase closings left and right. It's the week between Christmas and New Year's - the worst week to go to Disney World.

What kind of idiots would book a trip during this crazy, insane time??

Hi, I'm Shannon. Nice to meet ya.
WnDEdit-387.jpg

See that guy in the picture with me? That's my husband, Will. He's sort of my favorite. :inlove: WDW is my favorite place. :inlove: I like to be in my favorite place with my favorite person. :inlove: :inlove:

But there's a catch. You see, this favorite person of mine is a teacher who coaches tennis. So for all of you that smugly say stuff along the lines of, "why not go during off-peak times," (is there even such a thing anymore?!) well, some of us can't. Seriously, like we wouldn't rather go during some random week in February or whatever??? In our case, it's summer or Christmastime for a longer trip. Those are the only options.*

We did the summer thing in June of 2011. It was hot and crowded, and Will swore we'd never do it again. The heat and humidity were too much. I agreed and set my sites on Christmas 2013 pretty much as soon as we got home from that hot, sticky trip. Yep, this trip had been planned (or at least thought about) for about 2.5 years! I'm ridiculous.

But this is where my crazy OCD planning began to shine. Right at the 11-month mark I had our resort reservation secured - no discounts are ever out for that time of year, but I was able to rent DVC points, which saved a RIDICULOUS chunk of change. We still had our APs and Tables in Wonderland card from earlier in the year, we booked flights on rewards points, and thanks to saving up our points on our Disney Visa we had just about enough rewards dollars to cover our food for the week. So as far as Disney trips go, this one was relatively cheap. And I of course woke up early at our 180-day mark to make reservations (19 ADRs! But would we keep them?! o_O) and grabbed some FP+ reservations at the 60-day mark or whatever. I also pored over the few Christmas-week trip reports on this and other Disney boards from fellow *idiots* like me, which were pretty hard to find...because most threads started with someone asking about traveling during this week didn't have actual USEFUL information, just snide replies along the lines of "cancel and book another week."* Um, thanks?

ANYWAY...I planned for and thought about this trip more than any other trip we've taken, and that's really saying something. But I'd say it paid off overall. :)

*Yes, I'm a little bitter about it. It just got really old to read how stupid people are for going during this time over and over. I promise the rest of the report won't be like this! Let's be friends? :geek:

Holy crowds!!! We have some good friends who were there at the same time and she mentioned the massive crowds, but she also was a first timer so I couldn't really gauge it from her description. Your pictures now give me some real perspective on what they experienced. YIKES!

Glad to hear your Citrico's experience went well. It's on my short list of signatures I want to try. The breakfast over at BW looks great too!

WOW! All caught up again. Great TR! Loving all the Christmas pictures.
Really like the picture of the balloons at GF ... cool shot!
DH & I did not care for Citricos ... Our entree & server were both sub par (only went once ... won't go back) ... BUT we did love our desserts :p
You were lucky with your ADR cancellations & not being charged ... we were not so lucky (in November).
I hate the new cancellation policy :(
DH & I are in the same situation as you. DH is a school teacher ... so holidays and summer are when we can go too, kinda stinks, but we do it
I'm sorry you didn't have a good experience at Citricos. :( It left me a little underwhelmed when we were there in 2011 but it more than made up for it this time!

Originally when the ADR cancellation thing was announced I didn't bat an eye, but this trip we did move a lot of stuff around and canceled a few reservations, which we've never done before. I'm just glad the ones I did cancel were made before the new policy was in place.

Ah, another teacher! They should have a special "teachers and family-only" time at WDW. That would be ideal. :)

Holy crowds indeed! I hope your friend still had a good time. I couldn't imagine going there that week and having that be my first visit. I think it only worked for us because we knew what we were getting into and didn't have the mentality that we had to do EVERYTHING...we've been there before and know we'll be back. If that makes any sense.

Thumbs up for Citricos and the Boardwalk Bakery! Definitely 2 of my faves.

After our tasty, tasty breakfast we headed into the Boardwalk loddy. I know I've mentioned it before, but we spent our honeymoon here in 2009 (also my first trip as an adult after a 15-year WDW hiatus) so I am very, very fond of the Boardwalk. :inlove: Lots of good memories here.

I was so surprised to see the little sweet shop set up instead of the gingerbread gazebo!

There was another tree set up out back. I'm not sure what the small stage was for, maybe a NYE DJ?
WDWHolidayEdit-236.jpg

After re-visiting the Boardwalk we slowly made our way around the lake...

I was soooo sad...when we came up to the Yacht Club there were no people on the path, so I tried to take a people-less shot really quickly. Of course I had some kind of camera issue (wrong settings, or maybe something as dumb as forgetting to take the lens cap off) so I missed my chance. Boooo!
WDWHolidayEdit-244.jpg

Pretty Yacht Club tree:
WDWHolidayEdit-245.jpg

I'd really love to stay here someday but I think we'd need a pretty significant discount for it to happen. :(
WDWHolidayEdit-246.jpg

The Yacht Club's main Christmas decoration was this little town and model train set-up!
WDWHolidayEdit-247.jpg

It was incredibly detailed. I wish I would have taken my time and gotten better pictures.
WDWHolidayEdit-248.jpg

Instagram video!

The last stop on our Epcot Resorts tour was the Beach Club. They had their usual gingerbread carousel:
WDWHolidayEdit-249.jpg

This looks familiar!
WDWHolidayEdit-255.jpg

They also had some bonus Little Mermaid decor!
WDWHolidayEdit-250.jpg

I think their tree is definitely one of my favorites on property. It's so bright and fun, and I love the "Under Da Sea"-like theme. :D

Geez, I am late to this party!!!

That is quite the death stare Archie is giving you on his way to doggy camp. He makes such expressions, that dog--he's obviously half-human. o_O And totally adorable. :)

Sorry you both were sick, looking forward to catching up with the rest of the report to see if you got better before you had to head home from your totally relaxing race-less vacation.

I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your Artist Point meal. It used to be a favorite of ours, but our last two meals there have been bleah, so I haven't booked it for either of our upcoming trips. I want it to go back to being amazing.

And I love the photos of the WL Christmas decorations!! Especially the little lumberjack tree. How cute!

With you on the buffet dining...we just don't eat enough to justify the cost of buffets.

Lovely photos of SSE!! And that is a magical shot of Grand Flo.

Citricos is our new favorite restaurant. Glad you enjoyed your meal there. I think the short rib is the most popular dish on the menu--the last time we ate there, our table was right next to the staging area, and I saw plate after plate after plate of short ribs get served up. And I think we've had John as our waiter, too.

All caught up!! Great photos of the Boardwalk area. I love BW too, and we'll be staying there for our anniversary in May.

Oh, and back to the topic of breakfast--since we are DVC members there's always at least a toaster in the room, so we usually pick up a package of bagels and buy or bring a stick of butter, and that's breakfast. Or we might buy a package of bacon and cook it in the microwave. We've never really been anxious to get to rope drop, so that works for us. :)

-First off, EXCELLENT trip report so far, I'm enjoying it!
-I'm sooo sorry you didn't feel well during your vacation...hopefully, you eventually felt a little better!
-I hate to admit but I'm one of those people who say NEVER to go at the time of year you went! I don't mean for it to come off mean and negative though. In all honesty, it's busy ALL.OF.THE.TIME anymore which is good because that means they're making money to stay open but it's also bad because sometimes it makes for a less enjoyable vacation. I say go whenever you can and make the best of it! It's WDW how can you not have fun?
-Your dog is adorable, what kind of dog is he? I can totally sympathize with you as far as leaving your fur baby behind! I have a cat, Sterling, and I HATE leaving him! I miss him so much while we're gone but I LOVE going to WDW so I make it through!
-The Garden Grill is for sure delicious but I agree that it is very expensive. I never knew you could ask for the macaroni & cheese! I LOVE MACARONI & CHEESE! I could eat it all day, every day!
-I love WDW at Christmas, it's so magical! You got some excellent pictures of the resorts!
-We went last year in April and September/October and I don't get to go again until November of this year......thank goodness for these trip reports though, keeps me sane until it's MY turn to go!

Can't wait for more...

loving your report! So sorry you guys were feeling under the weather. We just missed you guys. We left the world or Christmas eve. We did a split stay between the BWV and AKL. It was our first stay at BWV and I quickly fell in love with it! AKL is one of our favorite resorts. Its so peaceful IMO. Heading back in May and doing a split between BC and AKL.. Can't wait.

I showed Chandler your pic on Main Street. He shook his head and said, "Good God. How?" LOL! It did sound like the CMs really handled the flow well so that's a good thing. Sad you didn't get to see the fireworks, tho. I would've been right with you. Stay in the mob or get the heck out? I'd be out. :)

No gingerbread gazebo? Sad face. The Boardwalk is so pretty. We would've already stayed there if not for that darned slide at the pool. The boys are so freaked out by that thing. Maybe when it's just me & Tracey for a pre-cruise night or something. LOL!

I hope you do get to stay at the Yacht Club sometime. We really, really loved it there. So relaxing. I hear people say it seems stuffy...much like what is often said about the Grand Floridian...but you gotta stay there to really gauge it. We found it more relaxing than anything. ;)

Love the peek at all the Christmas decorations! So pretty!

I know your feeling of the Boardwalk as well :inlove:

And holy moly those crowds! I thought the 40th anniversary of the Magic Kingdom was bad....

That was my thought also! The problem with the 40th anniversary crowds was that there was no crowd control. No CM's to direct traffic at all. It was every man for himself.

Great pictures by the way! Can't wait to see more. I enjoy hearing about all of the signature restaurants. I would love to try some of them, but I'm enough of a picky eater that I'm worried I wouldn't find anything I like.

Really enjoying your report!

Grateful for your insight about the Wishes dessert party. I was dreaming of booking for our next trip, but the price for me & the hubs +2 kids+2 grandmas = I can buy some tasty treats at The Confectionary ;-)

Bummer you were a sicko, but it looks like you really WOman'd up!

Looking forward to the rest!

It totally looks like a death stare but I assure you that he was very excited to go to doggy camp! :) I'm not totally sure how much he loves me pointing his phone at him for pictures...too bad because I won't ever stop doing that!
Sorry you both were sick, looking forward to catching up with the rest of the report to see if you got better before you had to head home from your totally relaxing race-less vacation.
Thanks! Will was feeling better by the 2nd or 3rd day, but still needed to catch up on the sleep. I think it was totally gone for me by the time we had a day or two left. :(
I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your Artist Point meal. It used to be a favorite of ours, but our last two meals there have been bleah, so I haven't booked it for either of our upcoming trips. I want it to go back to being amazing.

Yeah, me too! We were really looking forward to trying Artist Point. :( Oh well.

I was super impressed with ALL of the deluxe resort decorations. They were all really great!
With you on the buffet dining...we just don't eat enough to justify the cost of buffets.

Lovely photos of SSE!! And that is a magical shot of Grand Flo.
We have NEVER come out of a buffet feeling like we've gotten our money's worth. We just can't eat that much!

Thanks for the kind words on the photos :) The GFLo one is one of my favorites.

I totally believe that the short ribs are the most popular dish! That is absolutely what I'll get the next time we go back! Isn't John awesome? I thought he was so sweet when he was our server in 2011.

Yay, happy early anniversary! Ours is in May, too! :)

Since we were in a DVC studio I'm sure we had the toaster, too. Totally should have taken advantage of that. We're becoming less and less anxious to make it to rope drop as we visit WDW more and more. :D

Thank you so much for checking out the report! :)

Haha, I DO get why people say not to come this time of year. Believe me, if there was some way we could go any other time (except summer) we'd do it! You're totally right that it's all about making the best of when you
CAN go.

Why THANK YOU for the kind words about the pup! :D He's a beagle/Cavalier King Charles spaniel mix. He has sort of a split personality...very stubborn and loud at times but also very sweet and kind of a lap dog. :inlove: Is your cat your avatar?? He's SOOOO pretty. We think about getting a cat quite often but Will is sometimes allergic (just depends on the cat, it's weird) and the dog would totally have a heart attack, I think.

Hooray for Garden Grill! Yep, I read beforehand that you can ask for the kid's meal items, so I thought, "why not?" Totally worth it!

Thank you!! How funny, we did the same split stay (AKL/BWV) a couple of years ago. Two really great resorts!! How did you like WDW at Christmas time? I'm sure the crowds were just starting to ramp up before you left...

May is a great time to go! That's when we went for our honeymoon in 2009. It was a little rainy but otherwise nice weather without the insane crowds. Flower and Garden festival is nice too.
I'd be out. :)
Chandler - GREAT question! :hungover: Haha! The CMS were great. I totally could not do that job.
No gingerbread gazebo? Sad face. The Boardwalk is so pretty. We would've already stayed there if not for that darned slide at the pool. The boys are so freaked out by that thing. Maybe when it's just me & Tracey for a pre-cruise night or something. LOL!
Yeah, I was surprised - I didn't know that they really changed up the resort decorations at all. And yes, that clown slide is TOTALLY freaky. I get it!
I hope you do get to stay at the Yacht Club sometime. We really, really loved it there. So relaxing. I hear people say it seems stuffy...much like what is often said about the Grand Floridian...but you gotta stay there to really gauge it. We found it more relaxing than anything. ;)

Me too! Some day I will make the Yacht Club happen! And I know you and I are on the same page about the GFlo (NOT stuffy despite what others say) so I'm sure I'd love the Yacht Club too. I just need a great discount to make it happen.

I'm so glad we made time to look around at the Christmas decorations. Really was not interested in too much park time on NYE so this was a great way to spend our morning. :)

Yep, I totally thought of you when I took those! :)

Seriously, the most crowded I have ever seen a place anywhere. It was nuts!

Thanks Jess! Going to the Signatures is probably our favorite part of our Disney trips. I'm pretty picky too but I like to think I've been getting a bit more adventurous lately. You should try one sometime, I'm sure there will be something you will enjoy!
Really enjoying your report!

Thanks so much! :)

I'd never tell someone to not try something just because it didn't quite work out for us, so if you REALLY want to do the Dessert Party, go for it! I think I said earlier it was about $60 total for both of us (so $30ish apiece with tax included). We did have some kind of surcharge too because of the time of year. If you really love dessert and want to be somewhat shielded from the crowds it's probably not bad to try once. :)

You bet I woman'd up! ;) Haha!

We just got back from our trip 12/27-1/1 and it was crazy. I could go on a whole rant about waiting 2 hours for the crystal palace on new years eve which we had reservations for. Positive side is that it was the first time I had ever had a 10:00pm dinner. Anyway just wanted to say it is good to have someone to sympathize with.

P.S. your bloody nose probably did help hurry the room along. Judging by the fact that last year my brother had a stomach bug from UNIVERSAL FOOD and when we got to the Beach Club they had a room for us ready at 5:00 am. How I love the Beach Club
