The Stitch theaters would be the only abandoned attraction space but there are others. There is abandoned retail space in Adventureland that was boarded up when Aladdin’s Flying Carpets was dropped in. Tomorrowland Terrace and Tortuga Tavern are under utilized. The Galaxy Palace Theater space is now parking. I believe Princess Fairy Tale Hall only uses part of the Snow White’s Scary Adventures Space.
Still all used. Only Stitch is abandoned at the moment

Outside of Stitch - which is pitiful that it is closed and unused, but is not a particularly large space - what other spots in MK are "abandoned"? Seems to me that most anything to be built in MK would need to be an expansion or a replacement of something existing unless I'm forgetting someplace there.

Tomorrowland Terrace was my other thought for Tomorrowland itself. Not technically abandoned, but a complete waste of an excellent location. Not that it's attraction space.

The Stitch theater was what I was talking about, though. There's an abandoned attraction space just sitting there and instead of actually using it for something they build something new that doesn't really fit the location.

With that said, at least Tron actually is something new instead of tearing down Space Mountain and putting Tron there as a replacement like they've done in EPCOT and DHS.

EDIT: I'd also love to argue that the Tomorrowland Speedway is abandoned space, since it's a tremendously outdated version of an attraction with hundreds or maybe thousands of better incarnations scattered across the US, thus making it somewhat embarrassing for Walt Disney World. That would be a bit disingenuous though since it is open for guests.

I agree that Tomorrowland Terrace (and Tortuga Tavern for that matter) should be open regularly for food service. That is a somewhat different issue than where to build attractions though.

Regarding Stitch, I'm totally on board that that space needs to be reopened as a new attraction. It's pathetic having that sitting there unused within the busiest theme park in the world. Even a "lesser" attraction would be of value - think something like the Cars Racing Academy attraction at DHS - by providing another thing that can occupy guests. That space though is pretty small and wouldn't really accommodate a "major" attraction, certainly not something like Tron that despite the naysayers on here will be quite popular among many Disney guests.

But anyway my point going back was simply that MK doesn't really have abandoned space the way some of the other parks do. Underutilized perhaps, but since they actually finally reused the 20K plot, the choices for attractions (outside of Stitch theater) for new attractions at MK would either be construction on new space or replacement of existing attractions. I think most all of us would agree that MK really needs expansion and new capacity over replacing existing stuff. And the park - all WDW parks - have the space, they just need to use it.

It's just sad that they often will figure out out to add more guest areas to DLR and increase the already high attraction count there, but constantly replace things at WDW even though there is crapload of rooms to add more. In some cases (replacing the very large and outdated Backlot Tour) I can understand, but a lot of them (GMR, Energy, Maelstrom, SWSA, etc) it strikes me as pointless just spending money and running in place instead of making substantial improvements for guests.

agree, and laugh floor is shut down as well, (maybe I missed it if that was mentioned?), so you have a land that has its whole main corridor closed, and peoplemover closed,,(for now).....and years of overdue needed show updates/refreshes to those or carousel of progress or buzz for that matter etc...happy 50th!

Well, Laugh Floor is a COVID casualty like a lot of indoor shows, not a permanent closure, right? And it's definitely one that works better with a larger crowd as it would be more people to "pick on" and submit jokes. But yeah hopefully that will reopen sometime soon, at least by the 50th.

It's really terrible.

As for the Backlot Tour -- I don't know that it was really that outdated. The bigger issue there was that they were no longer using the area as a working studio, which made it pointless (unless that's what you meant by outdated). I don't blame them for replacing it under those circumstances. It's just too bad they replaced it with something significantly worse.

I am actually surprised they are not calling Avatar part of the new attractions for the 50th Anniversary... It is sad we are not getting any of the other nice things Disneyland got for their 50th...like the amazing Enchanted Windows on Main Street... Instead they are going to make the Confectionery larger and plainer...and the window displays are all very old ...

Meanwhile, Walt Disney World still has the old Mickey and Friends models still displayed at Magic Kingdom designed by John Leland.

Well, y'know what they say... if something isn't broken, don't fix it. Then again, Disney doesn't seem to understand that phrase themselves...
