The World's Most Magical Celebration - Walt Disney World's 50th anniversary

A lot of those subscriptions are coming from India.

This is leading to lower revenue per subscriber by nearly 30%.

It is coming into question if Disney will be able to hit the 5 year target they themselves set.
Their original 5-year guidance was 60m subs, which they far exceeded. ARPU im Q3 was back up again after a dip in Q1 and Q2. Their new target is aggressive - we will see if they make it or not - but their content push slowed the second half of this year due to covid delays last year. Next year is a huge content year for D+ - I don't think there's anything to worry about there.

What a strange day it was, some good, some bad. First, I was very excited I got to park for free. Woohoo, $25 saved! I was very disappointed that the trams still aren’t running. It would’ve been great to have those back for the big day.

I had no idea about the free photopass. I would have gotten some pictures if I had known. It’s harder to get nice pictures when you’re there by yourself. I just looked at the one photo I did scan from Splash Mountain and it doesn’t even have me in it, even though the one I scanned did. 😕

Wifi signal was down for most of the day. That stunk. How can you use My Disney Experience when you have no access to the internet? I don’t have the latest phone and the greatest data service either, so wifi would’ve helped a whole lot.

I barely waited for any rides. Splash Mountain, BTMR, and Space Mountain were walk ons. I thought the wait time for Space was great at 20 minutes, but when I got inside, there was only a handful of people loading into the vehicles. This was a day for people who don’t long waits for attractions.

I didn’t buy any merchandise. Most of it doesn’t appeal to me. I got into Big Top around 10 am, but everything was overpriced, even by usual Disney prices. When I picked up one of the ladies shirts to look at it, the sleeves were stuck to the back. I’m not spending that much on a shirt when the design is sticky. The one thing I did want from the Cinema wasn’t in stock, so I guess I’ll head to Disney Springs for that.

Food was terrible and I’ve eaten at Columbia Harbour House and Pecos Bills in the past. I don’t remember them being this awful. I could pay a lot less for fast food and have a better meal. I thought about trying some of the new snacks, but will probably do that in a few weeks when I have family coming, so I can share them with somebody.

I met @Figments Friend who was very nice and gave me a couple postcards and a sticker. 🙂 I’m glad there wasn’t a line for that, but there should’ve been more people to come and meet you, because your postcards are so cute.

Main Street filled up quickly for fireworks and why, I’ll never know. Enchantment wasn’t worth it. I think in the future, I’ll use that time to do other things in the park or maybe leave early. I wish I could have stayed until 11, but my whole body was tired and it was a long day. It was a decent day for rides, but as a 50th birthday celebration, it was a letdown.

Very nice to meet you too!
Thanks for the compliments.
🙂

Your write up above reviewing your experience yesterday mirrors my thoughts pretty closely....right down to the annoyance of not having wifi service at the Park, and not knowing about free PhotoPass photos.
That explains the huge lines I saw later in the day....at the various PhotoPass spots near the Castle.
Wish I had known....but, yeah, no wifi service!
Had to walk over to the Contemporary and take a break in the lobby to get online and chat with my Disney friends.

Regarding the food offerings -
Columbia Harbor House was a fave spot, but yes, the food quality has taken a slight decline.
I also noticed that the drink cup sizes in the Park were half the size they used to be.
A 'large' cup is now in reality a 'medium'.
Exspecially noticed this with any 'specialty drinks' like slushies or the like.

Been talking to my Disney friends while on Property.
It has been interesting listening to them talk....and vent about things.

I'm being told that some Cast in Entertainment are hoping the 50th is a flop so that Chapek will be driven out of the Company.
Lots of dislike there....I was feeling the anger.
Lots a bad feedback regarding 'Enchantment'....that's CM feedback, not Guest complaints I should clarify.

Sounds like it was a flop in some respects, and from what I witnessed in person yesterday I'd agree from a anniversary day-of event.
Disappointing, but sales from merch will just solidify and encourage similar courses of action.
That is what yesterday was all about - buying stuff.
Right up Chapek's alley.

For me, the best part of the 50th was the addition that was made to the Electrical Water Pageant. We were very happy that we watched it last night.

Agree.
I mentioned this a couple of days ago here, but yes.
Full agree this is the best thing yet to come from the anniversary.

Show if that Show some love means a lot.
And the '50th' segment looks really nice.

A must see in person, in my opinion.

Some answers to why Disney is not busy:

1. Large and Small Conventions are not happening right now.

2. Brazilian travel groups are not visiting

3. The Florida Resident 3-4 day promotion ended a few weeks ago outside of the one that runs all the time that is more expensive.

4. No Florida resident discounts on hotel rooms until December.

5. Schools are back in session. This is the return of the slow season Disney used to get.

6. Annual passes lost a huge perk with free fast pass going away.

7. No real concerts at Epcot Food and Wine

8. Velocicoaster and Hagrids Coaster is a much bigger draw locally than Ratatouille.

9. No recent animation hits recently that drives visits like the Frozen years. Onward, Soul, Luca, and Raya aren’t driving theme park visits. Animation hasn’t been great since Lasseter has been gone.

10. People are waiting for parades and fantasmic to return along with other live entertainment.

11. People are waiting until Guardians and Tron open up.

12. Covid and fear of crowds by many, including families that are also not going to movies in person because vaccines aren’t available for kids younger than 12.

The wait times at the other parks, especially DAK, make it look like a ghost town, I’m actually kind of curious to see a report from people around the rest of WDW. @Figments Friend’s talking about the Poly was fun to see.

My first full day here (Sept 29 ) I noticed a lack of crowds.
I visited MK with a friend and was honestly surprised at how empty the Park seemed to be that first half of the day.
I kept telling my friend how empty it felt...being so used to crushing mobs.

Oct 1st at MK was naturally busier.
Today felt busy, but it's the weekend.
Will be interesting to see how crowd levels at Epcot will be on Monday.

Ok…those popcorn buckets are cheap and ugly looking …

I guess no one else noticed hopped up on dust. It’s like real life Zootopia

Yeah, if have to agree...not really understanding the recent obsession some have regarding the various popcorn buckets.
I mean, I get it : some of them are kinda fun or are a neat novelty, but some of them.....big question mark.
We all like different things...but yeah.
Not getting the whole obsession.

Saw many hoarding these the other day...walking around on October 1st at MK with five of them around their neck.
I don't care how much they try to resell these for on eBay - why would anyone want to carry all that weighted plastic around their neck on a warm day on Magic Kingdom's 50th Birthday?
Why..?
Is it that much of a status symbol now?

I believe that not only CM here who complained, but some west coast friends who didn't visit MK or WDW, even Disneyland employees, gave a bad feedback about "Enchantment" because the firework show does not have a tribute to the WDW parks and rides. I suspected that they only knew the existence of RDCT and didn't much know other firework shows at DL except of course Disneyland Forever, which have little to do about Disneyland, so i hope friends in west coast see that show in-person before deciding yourself.

Look I’m not going to argue back and forth with a pixie duster.

Your right.

Disney is doing great!!

They have just had a disaster of a 50th.

Two new nighttime shows that that did not go over well at all.

Kite tails shows the future of entertainment is going to be 6 flags quality.

Just when the bad taste of all this is about to wash out of your mouth…

Here comes genie+ to remind everyone that it’s all about the guest experience!

All of this good news must be a sign of an effective and visionary CEO.

All is well in pixie dust land.

I feel like D23's gonna be hit with protests next month.

Not necessarily. Mickey’s of Glendale (WDI Store) releases pins at Destination D that can be flipped for a bunch of money. So when registration for this opened, a bunch of “merchandise” people signed up and people who were used to attending a more laid back, Disney history weekend weren’t able to register. I would expect a bit of a different D23 crowd for this. One that has many more people who only need to be shown where to queue for shop access.
