What’s it about, then?
Well, other things, it seems.

Bob Iger was president during a very successful time for the Company: at the box office, at the parks, and on Wall Street.

Many of the complaints here ignore or dispute this, with no evidence. Some are angry that Iger didn’t do things he actually did, others are super upset that he did things he didn’t actually do.

Again, there’s plenty to disagree with, and it’s super easy from outside and with hindsight to criticize. So many complaints seem to be made out of ignorance:
  • “Disney+ isn’t profitable!” (It wasn’t planned to be until the end of this year)
  • “He should thin the ranks at ESPN and ABC!” (He did)
  • “There’s nobody in the pipeline to take his place!” (There are several)
  • “Bob claims to be an artist!” (No evidence of this)
Bob is a grown man, he can take the criticism and deserves accountability. I have no desire to defend him. But when people give reasons for disliking Iger that aren’t based in reality, it leads me to think maybe their frustration is about something else.

Iger has a bullseye target on him many times over. Ever heard of Brian Roberts? When the critics of Universal parks and resorts are unhappy do they target billionaire CEO of Comcast , Brian Roberts ?

We used to blame Bill Gates for every little annoyance that was added to Windows back in the old days. It's really no different today. People *need* someone to blame for something, even if it makes sense or not. Iger is just taking on that role, just the same way Eisner did before him.

Unless I can access all the live sporting events through this app that still appear on traditional cable, rather than the extra crap (usually) they send to the apps, not really interested.

edit: wait, it seems this is what they would give??! Linear sports networks??

A lot of posters are angry at the business culture which has come to dominate corporate America and Wall Street since the late 70s. Iger is a very standard (very competent) product of this system. He embodies its beliefs and its substantial failures. The same culture drives every other entertainment corporation. Iger is not uniquely terrible and it is unlikely his replacement, who will spring from the same system, will be better. It’s understandable to be angry about this culture - I am. The problem is when posters either don’t understand or won’t acknowledge that the issue is far, far bigger than Iger.

Also, as you suggest, some posters are very upset about… other things.

This could be a game changer for many. Lots of people hold on to traditional cable due to live sports alone.

The biggest issue is the lack of CBS in terms of dropping cable -- that's a bunch of NFL and college football games, the Masters weekend coverage (although the Masters simulcasts it on their website so this is available to stream anyways), and large parts of the NCAA tournament.

Here's my issue. Universal has gone through the same issues after COVID but are basically back to investing into their money maker, which are the parks. Iger spent all the money on Hulu, Fox and pouring it into D+ that has yet to prove it will be a big money maker. Being profitable and being a big revenue generator is two different things.

Huh, interesting. This is not going to result in ESPN's desired infusion of cash. My immediate thought is antitrust. How are regulators going to take this?

How often do you go to Universal? I go a lot and I still love it… but the parks have new management and their direction is disturbing. Significant cost cutting measures are impacting the guest experience. The most recent additions, Dreamworks Land and Minions Blast, are very cheap and very disappointing. Prices are rising fast. And the new park, while it looks fantastic, is underbuilt. Universal is subject to the same exact business culture as Disney.

And Comcast, like every entertainment giant, has a cash-sink streaming service. It’s doing worse than D+.
