Yes, Universal has a long way to go before its parks are as stagnant as Disney's, but I'm sure with a decade of poor management Universal can finally equal Disney at that.

I think you took totally out of context

I was (rather specifically) speaking of the ambiance and organic nature of AK. To further it, Uni cannot compete with World Showcase experience, not at all! If you will, really spending time in each Country, looking at the exhibits, sampling the food (and drinks), talking to the CM's, even the movies, is something you can't find in many places other than the countries themselves. Cynicism has its place in WDW but lets give credit where credit is due...

I like how the hotels are so compartmentalized. Too sterile for my taste. What helps give the resorts variety at WDW is the fact that the resorts vary in size and shape of its footprint. The layout at HKDL looks like each resort is carved out using cookie cutters!
Well that's because it is. Creating Hotel Row, as it were, was a really smart decision, along with others, on the part of the planners of HKDL with the limited land they have. The existing and forthcoming hotels each have their own unique layouts and themes so I can't see much reason to complain there. After all, they could have been All Stars, but Disney would never want to present that side of itself internationally.
Coming back to your point of the new hotel being compartmentalized, I was surprised to a degree to see the new hotel only takes up half of that expansion pad. I had expected a hotel with a large room count, perhaps one the size of what was announced with room for expansion on the entire plot, that was more spread out with a large themed pool like FQ. When I think of WDW hotels with unique footprints, I tend to jump towards Dixie Landings and Port Orleans with their layouts firmly rooted in their themes in a way the other moderates aren't. I wonder if we'll ever see those themes travel to an international Disney resort like HKDL.

Side Note: I recently came across this image from the nineties of the HKDL landfill master plan. I would love to know more about it and if we'll see them pursue this idea in the coming decades. It's worth noting that Hong Kong International will expand its footprint with the construction of its third runway and terminal expansion.

Agree. Our family had a great time last October but we were done with everything by about 4pm. Seuss land and all since we went with our toddler. I realize we went at a slow time and and I like repeating my favorite rides but IOA could use a couple of more "must do" attractions. That park is exceptional in some areas like Potter, Spiderman, Mythos, and POE. It just needs more quality filler. But with the Potter train/quasi mandatory park hopper ticket (if I wanna see Gringots) on the way, IOA won't need more stuff...at least for now until IOA expands again.

Also, Starbucks just opened an off the shelf store in Port of Entry. It litterally looks like the one at my local mall. They made no attempt inside to theme it to the area at all. For all the crap we gave starbucks on MS and Epcot, at least there was an attempt to make it appropriate to the area/land. We should be fair no? Just thought I'd throw it out there...

MS at least it kinda blends in with the theme. Epcot however not impressed with at all, its as sterile and bland as can be, they didnt even try to make it unique or special in any way. But then that seems what they are going for anymore with Epcot. Might as well be at the mall really.

I see what you're saying, but DAK and World Showcase are way past their expiration date for me.

If I want botanical, organic ambiance I'll go to Leu Gardens or Fairchild in Miami or, perish the thought, a national or state park.

And I've always thought World Showcase is the most overrated area at WDW, especially now with the restaurants' prices. It's good for the locals who live in the parks (bless their hearts), and it's nice to stroll around. But the attractions are sparse and dated, if quaint. Replicas of world-famous monuments and "exotic" color aren't the high point of Disney theme park design, IMO.

So, yeah, if Universal never tries to do their own DAK or World Showcase, I think it'll be better for it.

Potter is the last big gun that Universal has, and it will be fired in 2014. Disney has Star Wars, The Avengers, Avatar and Frozen for the future. I also think that the Seven Dwarves Coaster will be a real crowd pleaser in 2014.
Well they don't have the Avengers.. Can't use them in WDW... Frozen cannot compete with Potter, sorry.... And after all, what are the talks about Frozen? An overlay (probably cheaply done) in Maelstrom... Yep, that is on the same level and in the same chamber as Potter... Star Wars is all they have to leverage... Avatar? Nah... Only Iger thinks so...

And i agree with your last statement.I dont go to WDW for Uni and vice versa. I love Uni for what it gives me in rides but I love Disney for what it gives me in atmosphere. AK and WS still do it for me. I have been to Disney at least 3 times every decade (not counting when i worked there) so I guess I just take each section for what it is.

I go almost every time with a first or2nd timer and without fail the afternoons we spend in WS is always at the top of their list.

Exactly I find myself out of IOA by 2pm at the latest which is around how long I spend at AK... It's fine though because then I finish off my day at US, but both Uni parks are "half-day" parks in my mind

Spirited President's Day Musings:

Yes, Martin Van Buren makes my toes tingle. Wanna make something of it?

There seems to be a lot of angst in the Twitverse over the fact the Mickey Monitor is calling the new kiddie coaster the first attraction that can be seen all around (360 degrees). Yes, it would seem that whomever wrote that forgot a long list of attractions starting with the Carousel that would shoot that down. But what makes you think the writer has even set foot in the MK before? Or has the thought capacity to realize that is one BIGTIME boo-boo?

OK, I am done with House of Cards and I am done with House of Cards. And, after speaking my anger to an industry friend, I realize that I am not alone. I'm not going to spoil anything for anyone except to say that Frank Underwood ends Season two exactly where you would expect him to ... in say season 4 or 5 or 6. My friend compares the rush to push storylines based on the whole Netflix model. It was also why Arrested Development was so bad in its comeback despite the talent associated with it.

... It all comes down to binge viewing. It's sorta like the OCD fanbois that must have every piece of EPCOT ephemera ever produced. Folks watch an entire season in a weekend so you can't develop a show normally. You have to move at warp speed to account for the fact that the vast majority of your viewers are going to be done with the show in ... at most ... a month. And you don't want them cancelling their Netflix accounts ... So, what I termed poor writing and holes you could drive a triple wide MK guest through after watching the first five hours become something more. I'm sad and disappointed because Spacey and Wright are so damn good. But at the end of the day, this type of writing does not serve them well. I know my opinion won't be the popular one, but that never bothers me and won't now.

Oh, that also convinces me that Iger's bulge for streaming mass quantities of content all at once is a very bad model, whether or not it's the kewl thing in the industry right now.

Wondering if HKDL's financials plus expansion plans (and you have not heard all of that yet!) will get the USA fanbois, who will never visit anyway, to stop dissing the park. It's already a lot nicer place to visit than the MK, even if it doesn't have as many attractions. I know, I lived in the city. I've been to the park many times. I wanna go back!!!

Any thoughts @WDWFigment ?

On HKDL, the new resort will take some design cues from Aulani and DAK Lodge, but it is a very different product overall. A friend termed it 'the Adventureland hotel' and I think that is the best way to describe it.

So, WDW has a new parade and a new kiddie coaster that are supposed to open this spring. Doncha think it is about time they gave us dates?

Oops, in my quickee post earlier today I forgot to mention that DL actually has FOUR E-Tix down this holiday weekend. The subs are already history in my mind so I somehow excluded them. ... But seriously, can you imagine if MK had that many attractions closed? That point slams home the superiority of Walt's Park in multiple ways.

Going back to hotels, I suspect that UNI will be announcing No. 5 when it has the media in for Diagon's debut.

Comparing WDW fanbois and figure skaters ... so many jokes that write themselves.

So, George Kalogridis has been WDW Prez for over a year. How often do you see or hear fans, cast or guests talk about (or tweet) seeing him, meeting him, posing for a pic with him? You do realize he is just the designated fall guy (with all his millions) for NGE, right?

If you have a problem with a company, the best way to deal with it (if you are capable) is going to the top. Any company.

So, the networks have basically decided not to counter program the Olympics even during February sweeps.

You guys/gals see the surfing piggy?

If done right, Avatar will be better than Potter. It will even have it's own unique night time elements. Avatar is number 1 movie in the world and a lot of people liked it. Sure the characters weren't memorable but the world of Pandora was

Went to MK and DAK today MK was packed, I'd say an 8 out of 10. DAK as well, it was open till 9 though! I wish that park was open at night more, it's so beautiful, such a shame most people don't get to see it. Oh, Everest had over an hour wait around 8 PM.

I know. I love DAK after Dark. It is so beautiful. And Disney put in a very pricey lighting package that most people never get to see in use. A bit surprised by the 9 closing, but guessing their projections were very high.

I'm enjoying True Detective, though I'm disappointed that last week's show didn't follow through with the awesome visuals that ended the previous episode.

I'm two episodes from the end of Season 1 of House of Cards. Just watched 11 chapters in 24 hours. Blown away by it. Simply amazing.
It reminds me so much of The Wire.

You should give it up or get better taste ... to be fair, though, the show was manufactured for folks like you who will watch 11 hours in a day. Not my kind of TV. I'd rather sit a week and wonder what will happen and then see how it all plays out.
