The Spirited Back Nine ...

Sony could use some good PR right now... Publicly succumbing to a threat regarding the release of one of your movies doesn't improve that PR issue.

And the continued financial costs associated with this are a drain... they can just cut and run and try to move forward. Sony as a corporation has no interest in being a martyr and paying the price for it. The stock market isn't going to give them a pass for holding the line.

Except Sony had no choice since Theater companies decided they would not show the movie.

That's not even the same thing. Chains not showing a film is not the same as Sony refusing to release a film (as there are more than one avenues of course.. and independent theaters as well)

So what's next? People threaten to media organizations because they don't like a story there news is doing? Or go after a themepark company because they don't like an attraction? Where does this end?

It's fear and foolishness, plain and simple. We've given into the monster that lives underneath the bed.

The difference is... NK can reach out and hurt people or organizations... badly. The monster under you bed is a fear - the risk here is real.... as they've already demonstrated.

These are threats the government can not protect private companies from... they are threats that are global and can reach people anywhere, anytime. This isn't like someone threatening within the confines of a legal challenge - this is the wild west where each side can act with almost impunity. There is no hiding behind the US government, or borders.

You guys know there is still a good chance ex Sony employees did this to get back at the company after being terminated in this year's layoffs, right?

I don't think industry people would expose that much of the 'hidden' hollywood. They'd know they would be blackballed. Payback isn't worth it when it ruins you as well.

Ok the Sony situation and movie theaters: I work at one so this is what went down. Hopefully the back and forth on the issue can b subsided...

There were reports that movie theaters showing the movie would be bombed. Theaters didn't want to risk anything especially after the whole dark knight incident, so theater chains started telling Sony they wouldn't be playing it in their theater. So many chains and locations backed out of showing it so Sony then came out and just said they would not be releasing it.

@flynnibus , what do you make of SPE's CIO comments on underinvesting in IT security?

He's not the only one. The problem is people generally don't comprehend just how much exposure there really could be. They think security isn't relevant to their industry.. or think they can hide behind security through obscurity. People take digital communications for granted now and have a hard time stepping back and grasping "imagine if everything you've ever said in private was out on a billboard..". Between the Snowden situation and now this one... it might start to get people to comprehend the various ways information leaks can be harmful to a person or business. It's not just about protecting your designs, or the latest project plan... it's also about not having every action, discussion, or comment being laid out naked for the world to see without context.

The sad thing is... it's not like there is a solid alternative that would make this not possible. There is no perfect security, and security is still way too overbearing for most people's tolerances. Add in the resources of Nation States and one can feel they are fighting a battle they could never win. In that case, many people would just prefer to stay 'out of the crosshairs' and in turn will be even MORE risk adverse and try to avoid confrontation.

Eventually you might see a pushback on using technology... but its very difficult to extract yourself from it or people taking what you do and digitizing it without your knowledge.

You might find a lot more people making phone calls instead of emails/txts :)

I get that... but I feel the other side is going to do bad stuff no matter what. Why cave to their demands?
