The Sorcerer's Apprentice Season 5: ENDGAME - Hype Thread

Oh man...talk about a Direct with two really good bookends supporting stuff I'm just completely not interested in. It's not that I don't appreciate JRPGs from an artistic level, but did we really need to spotlight like 4-5 of them? As someone who's not a fan of the genre it really left me as a puzzle/platformer fan feel left out in the cold. As someone who knows nothing of Fire Emblem outside of Smash that Three Houses trailer felt like it was in a foreign language to me with how little I got out of it.

On the otherhand...Mario Maker 2 is long overdue and I'm stoked for it. Very glad it's a full fledged sequel and not yet another port. Link's Awakening is a HUGE surprise but a welcome one. Weird opinion, but it's my favorite Zelda game simply because of how streamlined it is. Again...not a traditional RPG guy haha.

They should have advertised it as an rpg direct. It wouldn't be the first time and it would have been better for both fans of the genre and people who aren't into them. Mario Maker and Zelda could have been easily held off for another more general direct.

I think the problem with straight up calling it an RPG Direct is that it's been almost half a year since any kind of Direct. To tell you the truth, I'm completely satisfied with this just based on the BIG strength of the two games that book-ended the presentation. I would have liked to have seen something on Pokemon, and that rumored Retro Studios Star Fox racing game still eludes me, but all it all it wasn't a bad Direct by any means.

Direct Review:

  • Mario Maker 2 looks really good. I find it fascinating and kind of ironic that they made 3D World a 2D game for this, although a 3D Mario Maker would probably be very complex and probably impossible.
  • The new Boxboy looks pretty good, hop they release that Boxboy Amiibo that never left Japan.
  • Smash Ultimate 3.0 looks cool, and I'm certain the first blurry picture is Stage Builder. And the Joker model looks really good (also, where's that Persona 5 port? Weird to have a character from a PlayStation exclusive in a Nintendo fighting game, but then again Cloud made it so the sky's the limit #KratosForSmash)
  • Why'd they spend 3 minutes talking about Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age: Definitive Edition?
  • The Tusm Tusm game looks good, but it will probably be very overpriced, my guess is $40-$50
  • What on Earth is Rune Factory and why is there 5 of them? I've never heard of it before today.
  • Oninaki looks neat.
  • Three Houses looks good, I love Harry Potter! Also, why does the collectors edition come with a calendar, why would you need a calendar halfway into the year? Why would you want a calendar with a video game?
  • I'm gonna download Tetris Battle Royale right after I post this.
  • The dogs censoring the Deltarune trailer was hilarious.
  • Hellblade was made by Ninja Theory, aren't those guys owned by Xbox now ? 🤔
  • I really hope Final Fantasy 7 gets a physical release so it can be on a cartridge as a bit of irony.
  • Astral Chain looks really, really good.
  • The Link's Awakening remake is everything mankind has led up to, it looks like perfection.

As an RPG fan, I was satisfied but not blown away with the direct.
As someone who never had the pleasure of playing Mario Maker, I'm extremely excited for Mario Maker 2.
Fire Emblem looks fantastic as well.
Dragon Age XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition VII Deluxe Mega Edition has me intrigued.
I'd rather see some of the 2D Final Fantasies ported over instead of 7 and 9. i just find them more pleasant portable experiences.
Astral Chain for Game of the Year?
Not even a title for Pokémon? No Persona 5?
