The Princess and The Frog

I'm interested because as someone who visited New Orleans frequently as a child (not so much anymore), I laughed my butt off at all the inconsistencies in the "Haunted Mansion" movie. The family had a front-bumper license plate, they talked about going to "the Lake" (what lake? the one that's been closed to the public for decades?), and they drove through beautiful forested areas—none of which exists in NO.

Let's see if this movie is more correct regarding the local culture and city.

By that, I hope you mean the in past. The film takes place in 1920's.

I think this will do great simply because every person on Deviantart who complains that there's too much CGI will come to see this XD (That's alot of people)

I was looking around IMDB and I found a new description of The Princess and The Frog.

When the free-spirited, jazz-loving Prince Naveen of Maldonia comes to town a deal with a shady voodoo doctor goes bad and the once suave royal is turned into a frog. In a desperate attempt to be human again, a favor in exchange for a fateful kiss on the lips from the beautiful girl, Tiana, takes an unexpected turn and leads them both on a hilarious adventure through the mystical bayous of Louisiana to the banks of the almighty Mississippi and back in time for Mardi Gras in New Orleans.

An unforgettable tale filled with music, humor and heart where two frogs—along with the help of a 200-year-old voodoo priestess, a love-sick Cajun firefly, and a trumpetplaying alligator—discover that what they want isn’t as important as what they need.

The Princess and The Frog will feature Disney’s first African American princess, Tiana, who lives in New Orleans during the Jazz Age. Other characters include Louis, a trumpet-playing alligator, and Ray, a love-sick Cajun firefly.

The Princess and The Frog marks the return to hand-drawn animation from the revered team of John Musker and Ron Clements with music by Oscar®-winning composer Randy Newman (Monsters, Inc., Cars, Toy Story).

I think this is really sounding like something special. Can't wait.

Aint it cool.com has a report from WonderCon. Apparently, some shots from The Princess and The Frog were shown. They also make a mention of the future of 2-D animation. Check it out.

Anyway, the footage wasn’t much. It was essentially three shots from the movie at different stages. The scene is the Prince going to visit the villain, a Voodoo priest named Dr. Facilier.

Three shots:

-Prince POV on Facilier behind his desk, doing card tricks with his tarot deck.

- Angle on the Prince as Facilier’s magic is worked, the chair’s arms turning into snakes and his transformation to being a frog begins.

- Prince POV on Facilier as the evil man seems to grow huge (of course, the prince is shrinking as he turns into a frog).

We saw many versions of these shots, from the rough storyboards to the rough, but instantly classic Disney pencils of the characters going through their motions, then the close to final versions.

Of the examples given, the one I liked the most was the Prince’s transformation, which is hidden in a cloud of swirling green smoke. It looked like it had it’s own light source because we could see flashes of the Prince’s silhouette as he fought with the snakes binding him to the chair. It reminded me a little bit of the magic stuff from SLEEPING BEAUTY and SWORD IN THE STONE.

He also mentioned that Disney’s animation plan is to have a digital animation film out every 18 months and a traditional hand-drawn animation film out every 2 ½ years.

So I'm not sure how reliable this site is but they are claiming that Princess Tiana's prince will not be African-American:

http://www.blackvoices.com/blogs/20...sneys-first-black-princess-has-a-white-prince

If this is indeed true it will be interesting to hear reactions. Personally I like the decision. Good for Disney! Mix things up a little bit. Also, he doesn't look white to me... he looks more Hispanic actually.

Looks Latino to me as well, plus they said the guy who voices him is Brazilian.

I am definitely looking forward to this.
I think it comes out in December 2009 in the US and I am in the UK and we are always behind with the Walt Disney films so I would think around February/March 2010 for us unless it is released all around the world on the same day or something like that. :)

This is keeping in the New Orleans Creole tradition, which is a mix of Spanish, French, and Black (including Caribbean, not necessarily "African") heritage.

I don't get the controversy over the prince being white. Being only half black myself, I think it's great that Disney not only is giving us their first black princess, but is also giving us a mixed relationship. There's totally not enough of that in animation (or media in general)

I'm enjoying the Prince debate to be honest. I agree with you on your points, but either way I would be happy, so long as the story is interesting and well told.

For me it just makes more sense that the Prince wouldn't be black, unless we are talking about an African prince (regarding the era that the film is based in).

It would be interesting to know more about him to be sure of where "Maldonia" is supposed to be... Don't know if we'll ever know for sure

Edit: Don't know if anyone has mentioned that Naveen is an Indian name? Just pulled from the first few "baby names" websites listed on google. Naveen means "New".
