The Old Disney Channel

I don't understand why they just can't air all the old stuff late at night like they used to. Their target audience isn't going to be watching tv at 3 am (well, they shouldn't be up anyway) so why can't they air it then. That's what they used to do anyway. In the summertime, I used to stay up all night watching Vault Disney. At least now if they did that we could all Tivo it.

Yes, my wife and I very much miss the old Disney Channel too... especially the Late Night program line-up and Vault Disney.
Why can't they bring at least some of that back?

I was just watching Pocohantas on the Disney Channel and I thought about something..........I know I'm 29, but Heavens do I miss the old disney channel when they use to show the classic cartoons, classic movies (The Ugly Daschund, The Love Bug, The Parent Trap, etc.) I can't stand all this Hannah Montana & Jonas Brothers crap!!!!! I know it's the generation, but I would love to be able to watch all the old cartoons somewhere. I've put several in my Netflix queue to watch, but I miss the classics like The Old Mill, etc. Does anyone else feel the same?

I watched it too, and I am 25!!! I agree the disney channel is nothing compared to what it was. I remember watching the classic cartoons when I was younger. I think there was a wake up mickey show...
I do know that on youtube there are a lot of the old classics now. I've watched the little blue car, and the tug boat along with all the classic mickey cartoons. I watched the one where they are ghost hunters the other day with my niece.

I agree that a channel devoted to Disney Classics sounds like a really good idea. I grew up on the only Disney Channel and would love to relive some of those old cheesy classics.

That said, I can't imagine that some of that stuff like Kids Incorperated was any better quality than Hannah Montana is. I'm sure that if that show was on today we would think.. "my gosh that's bad." I loved the Smurfs as a kid. Now that I have the advanage of seeing it threw the eyes of and adult, thanks to Boomerage, I can't help but notice ... its bad... really bad, and not in a funny Super Friends kind of way.

I wouldn't say Disney Channel is a complete departure from what it used to be. Yes they do not show the Mickey cartoons anymore. That's why they made Toon Disney. But take the '90s. There was still a lot of 'tween programming (even though that term didn't exist yet) with shows like Flash Foward, Brotherly Love, Growing Pains, The Famous Jett Jackson, and The All New Mickey Mouse Club. All those shows were supposed to appeal to their target audience.

Although, I do miss Vault Disney. Since Disney Channel's younger audience is asleep when Vault Disney was on, I don't know why they didn't keep it going instead of just rerunning the current shows at midnight.

But, I doubt Vault Disney would ever come back now that they sell all those shows on Walt Disney Treasure DVD sets. Although maybe those shows will make a comeback if and when they decide to go ahead and stream the episodes online.

Thats why I think the lobby's in the hotel's are awesome. They play old reels of cartoons on the t.v.'s. I have never seen any Hannah Montana or Jonas Brothers materials in the reel.

Disney Classic Channel

I completely agree, I wish they would create a Disney Classic Channel. They have plenty of material for it.

Bring back Disney's inside out show off the park a little.

Movies for the whole family, my niece has no idea about the Apple Dumpling gang, Petes Dragon, etc etc. makes me sad,

I grew up watching the Disney Channel and my wife and I constantly lament the loss of the old programming. Kids today are missing something great.

i also grew up on this and other cartoon channels. I remember great animate shows like Darkwing, Talespin, Gargoyles, and Ducktales. Now-a-days most animated series stink compare the ones in the past. (with some exceptions: Phineas and Ferb, Spongebob, and a few others). Of course, Disney Channel is plage with live-action series (sorry i am bais towards cartoons. i hate live-action comedies), but who are they going get when they are going do Disney Channel Games.

Yes!! A Vault Disney Channel would be great!! They already have a few different channels...what's one more that adults and even kids would like? My 4 yr. old loves Rescue Rangers!! Ch Ch Ch Chip n' Dale!!

Funny story about The Gummi Bears. I mention it from time to time and my hubby thought it was my imaginary friends that I made up...even though my father said how he used to like it and watched it with me every Sat. am. Anyhoo, we were at Blockbuster and they checked their computers and it was not there and the people working there all thought I was crazy even though I sang the song to them. So, I checked Disney store online and it was there. I was going to order it but saw it on Amazon fro $10 cheaper so I bought it there. My 4 year old watched a few episodes of it and got bored. I don't care...I like it!!:)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't think Smurfs was Disney. And I know Spongebob isn't. Plus Spongebob isn't that great. IMO, anyway.

I, too, will add to the many who miss the old Disney Channel greats. You and Me, Kid....that was a good show. Oh, and KIDS, Inc. was a combo skit/music video show that used popular music of the time and averted drama based plots. HM, on the other hand, IMO, is a dramedy (drama/comedy) based teeny bopper show built on poor music, and marketed to children years younger than the actors on the show.

That, in my opinion, is the strangest aspect of the new Disney Channel. They are purposely marketing TV programs portraying 13-18 year olds in 13-18 year old situations, to 10 year olds. That seems like a fundamental disconnect to me. When I was 10, it seemed most programs I was interested in, showed kids my own age, in appropriate situations. With the exception of the new MMC, probably cause I had an older sister who watched it. Or I was watching what I refer to as the last golden age for TV kids cartoons. Darkwing Duck, Rescue Rangers, Talespin, Ducktales, the new Winnie the Pooh, Goof Troop, not too mention the good work put out by other studios, such as Batman, Fraggle Rock, Ghostbusters, GI Joe, Transformers. Ok, I'm getting too nostalgic. :(

Not being a parent, I can't say for sure, but does it seem like children these days just don't watch as many cartoons as they used to?? The Disney Channel doesn't even seem to ever show any movies that aren't HSM or CR anymore. It's really become a shell of it's former self. It's really unfortunate.

EDIT: After looking at the schedule for this evening, and it being a while since I looked at their schedule, I completely agree with the previous posters that they could at least show some older programming overnight. Kim Possible is on at 2:30 AM, for example. That makes absolutely no sense.

As a teacher....I can definately say that kids watch waaaay too much tv. Some of the new shows out (Spongebob and the such) are not very appropriate for children to be watching...but they watch it. They are less creative than we were when we were kids.

As a parent...I def. monitor what my son watches and I will not allow shows with violence or inapprop. language. I also limit the amount of time, too. The shows we used to watch on DC were a bit more geared towards our age level and were not so violent.

I absolutely loved Mickey Mouse Club and Adventures in Wonderland!!! Not to mention Kids Inc., Mousercise, Under the Umbrella Tree & Fraggle Rock!

I can actually recall being so excited when they would run the free weekends of Disney Channel, before my mom finally caved in and ordered it lol.

If they could bring those shows back, I would definitely pay to watch them as opposed to having the Disney Channel free with what shows they have now :brick:

Ah yes the good old days of Disney Channel...Sadly when it first came out our cable system didn't have it until they had one thing I'll always remember and hope you will too....The Disney Channel Sneak A Peak Week when they had a chance to show a bunch of specials & movies during the week and then throughout the timeslot it would change to a Contribution-esq-order the cable channel thing..

And who here Remembers Nancy an Operator at the Disney Channel? When they did the week long previews to order the channel they would give you something like a Mickey watch, Doll or a shirt or a $10 Disney Store gift certificate..Check about 1:15 into this video to find her!

Here's what programs use to be without 4 hours of mind numbing Cory in the stupid house!!

But this is the thing I really miss the most...The Mickey arms Bumpers

They did have one of him on a dark ride..But sadly it's not on this one.
