How do you not see what I’m saying in your picture? Mickey has evolved like other characters in a more modern way but he hasn’t fundamentally changed. Aside from going from a black and white cartoon to color they did not fundamentally change his looks. Pretty much a change to the eyes and then colorized. This casting is changing the fundamental look of the character. Few characters are as established as Disney characters. People are allowed to care about a change to the character of Ariel as created. It would have been avoided with a new character. It’s wrong to call it bigotry if people don’t want a fundamental change to an iconic character.

People complain all the time about casting. Like Scarlett Johansson as an Asian character. Heck people now say that gay characters cannot even be played by straight actors. It’s an opinion not racism.

As the smallest minority class I object. #justiceforgingers

They have not said Ariel will no longer be a redhead so you can stop feigning outrage over it.

Personally I don't see the Ariel casting choice any different than the evolution of a character over the years like Mickey.

Mickey’s been pretty consistent over the years up until his latest rendition. This Ariel is just another interpretation entirely. One that will more than likely suck like the rest of the remakes. Can we just have another topic? This is so pointless.

The difference is no less extreme than what that between the two Ariels will be.

I disagree that it is another interpretation entirely.

I do agree it is pointless and should be a non story.

Not outraged and I’ve been pretty clear I want a pale redhead that looks like the cartoon. I want animated Ariel to jump on screen in the live action.

I’m a human panda bear on the edge of extinction and we deserve representation. #justiceforgingers

Can the argument be made that it is inappropriate (e.g. culture and/or race) and does not match expectations? As it took place in Denmark and Atlantis, those places were dominated by white people, no? Sorry for any ignorance beforehand. Just wanted to put that out there. I am not sure that has already been discussed.

Disney’s The Little Mermaid doesn’t take place in Denmark/Atlantis.

As it took place in Denmark

It did not:

The author was Danish, yes, but the original film wasn’t set in Denmark. Eric’s kingdom, which is in any case an unplaceable fantasy realm, has a Mediterranean rather than Nordic feel, as John Musker himself explains in the video commentary:

“That exterior of the palace Roland Wilson designed. He was a great draftsman; he designed the prince’s palace. He did a drawing that we loved that combined these sort of Mediterranean elements, uh, made it a palace unlike any other sort of Disney fairy tale palace, and uh, with the white-washed stucco, and was really going for a warm, southern Mediterranean feel that he thought would be attractive to a mermaid who had been stuck all her life in the cold ocean.”

The live action remakes have been pretty good so far (except Dumbo), y'all are haters. They're better than the billionth superhero sequel.
Jungle Book was interesting and fun in a theater, but doesn't hold up well. The others are bloated, forgettable retreads, and not a single one is superior to the animated film it's based on. They're not the worst films ever made (except Dumbo), and are mostly harmless fun. But enough is enough. We all know dang well why Disney's doing this, and "art" or "originality" don't factor into their decision at all.

This outrage against the live action remakes is the outrage I expected but never materialized against the MCU 8-9 years ago after they made the same movie for like the 10th time.
The MCU had the benefit of direction and a single narrative. It’s a theatrically released TV series. Now that it’s story is over, I fully expect interest to greatly decline. We’ll see what’s in store come D23 (or maybe even sooner at Comic Con), but nothing we know about is going to pull in audiences, I suspect. I mean, a Black Widow movie that has no bearing on the overall story? Come on. What dolt wants that?
