What were the complaints about RSR?
Too bad the search engine in this site sucks. The biggest problem people had was why use so much land for the worst IP Pixar had at the time? People hated Cars 2 & 3 and didn't understand why Disney would create an entire land around it. The reason was because merchandise sales for "hot wheels" Cars did really well. Kids loved them.

I wasn't posting on sites in 2012, but I was reading them. Consensus seemed to be immediate that RSR had legs to be an all-timer Disney attraction for the resort. There were definitely a lot of people questioning the decision to build Cars Land, which was absolutely warranted (not helped by Cars 2 "the film that killed Pixar" coming out before the land opened) and it's honestly a miracle Cars Land is as good as it is. Most of the negativity directed towards the actual land was focused on Luigi's Flying Tires IIRC.

In replacing the Flying Tires with Rollickin' Roadsters, Cars Land may be the only land at DCA that has definitely gotten better over the past ten years.

My question was more in regards to the reaction to the finished product. I guess I can understand some of those concerns before the land was built and people saw the finished results. I’ve since come to find out the concept art wasn’t the best.

That is my memory too. It was the thing that saved DCA along with the BV street. We where shocked how good it turned out considering the subject matter. The concept art was worst than the MK version. The flying tires took some practice but most people where never going to master it. Adding beach balls made it feel like a party instead of a frustrating experience.

My only complaint of Carsland is imagineers and John Lasseter should have created another fictional town with mountian backdrop based on Red Rock Canyon. LOL

Wow, that jogs a memory. There was a specific argument that rock formations, like those that form the background of Cars Land, don’t exist in California. As a matter of fact, they do.

I think Rise of the Resistance and Disneyland's Mickey and Minnie Railway knocked it out of the park. For Disney World though Mickey has a bad stain for management stupidly replacing the great movie ride with it. For us it was a great addition that didn't remove any attraction.

Hmmm in regards to MMRR at DL I’d say it’s a great addition but I don’t think they knocked it out of the park. With that said I think it’s pretty 50/50 amongst us theme park folks when it comes to MMRR. Where 50% think it’s really good and 50% think it’s kind of Meh. I’m sure 90% + of casuals love it.

This board is by far the most negative place I've seen in terms of reception for Disneyland's MMRR.

Great queue, check. Fits thematically, check. Replaced nothing, check. Good capacity, check. Fun experience for all ages, check. Except here, where some people act like it's no better than something like Winnie the Pooh.

There is a fair amount of criticism of the WDW version for needlessly replacing Great Movie Ride, but virtually none for the DL version. Most people love it. Except here.

It is all those things you mentioned. It can be all that and still not be a home run. “Knocking it out of the park” is high praise. I’d reserve that for attractions like POTC, Indy, ROTR, RSR etc. It’s a commercial success if you will but perhaps not so much a critical one. Like I enjoyed Jurassic World Rebirth and understand it’s a commercial success but also understand it’s not a perfect movie and could have been better.

I’ve laid out my issues with MMRR plenty of times so don’t want to bore everyone with that again but I think half of the scenes feel empty with most of the theming on the walls. I think it could have been a lot better.

The two complaints I head most often about RSR is 1) The race is too short and 2) The dark ride portion looks and sounds too much like what it is: a big warehouse space. I like RSR, and it’s probably the last time I was amazed and delighted by a Disney project, but I do agree that those 2 issues hold it back a bit.

RotR and GE do nothing for me because I can’t stand the sequel trilogy (though I think GE is technically impressive). A recent discussion on Capture the Magic put GE’s wrong trilogy issue perfectly: It’s like ordering a nice, juicy steak—and you can’t wait to taste it—but then the chef decides to serve a vegan alternative instead.
