Trip Report The midnight ride to MNSSHP and a whole lot of people

Well, after being back for a while, it is about time to start up the trip report. For the past few years, my daughter has been beating me up to go to Mickey’s Not So Scary, but with her dance schedule and school, we have never been able to get there. This year with a Monday holiday at school and a weekend off of extra practices, a quick check of the party schedule was in order. We were in luck. Friday October 11th looked just perfect. We decided to stay at the Contemporary, which actually is one of my favorites. I love being able to walk to the MK gates. Once the Hotel was booked and Tickets bought, I realized that this could be our first experience with Fast Pass Plus and decided to check it out. Yep, I’ve read all about how it kills being spontaneous and people don’t like it, but what the heck we would give it a shot. More about the experience later. Also on this trip would be a chance for my daughter to explore her new hobby, photography. In last years trip, her and I were doing one of our extended hour jaunts through the Magic Kingdom when she decided to start taking pictures with my DSLR. Jokingly I said maybe we need to get one for you. Fast forward to the Christmas list…… yep top of the list. Now while I was excited about this, my wife was probably thinking oh joy now I have two of them to deal with. Santa delivered a Canon T3 to my daughter and even more to my surprise was how much she stayed with it. Even taking a photography class during her summer break. All joking aside, I was really excited to go on this trip and spend time with my 9 year old daughter both doing the things we love, spending time at Disney and photography. So the pictures for this trip report will be a combination of both of us.

We’ll jump ahead to the leaving day. So that my daughter would not have to miss an extra day of school we decided to leave on a Thursday evening. Delta had a flight that left at 6:00 pm and arrived in Orlando a little after midnight. Both my wife and I kinda cringed at the after midnight part, but it was better than flying all day Friday and then being tired for the party. As this was going to be a short trip, we figured already being there on Friday was a plus. Our flight out was without delays and went really well. We landed just a little after midnight and this is where the fun began. I had decided that we would just grab a cab to the hotel so we wouldn’t have to wait for a bus. Well the waiting part didn’t go away. It was about a 30 minute wait for a cab, little did we know that would be one of the shortest wait times for the trip. We finally got a cab and off we go. About half way to the hotel, we started to realize that our cab driver was using all available lanes at the same time. I didn’t realize that the new e-ticket for Disney was the cab ride to the hotel. A whole lot of swerving going on. If there were any sleepy eyes from the long plane ride, they went away by the time we got to the hotel.

Check in was smooth and off to our room we went. We had figured to sleep in a little and then hit the Magic Kingdom around lunch time.

After a few hours of sleep, (only a few, it took that long for me to wind down after the cab ride) we were up and ready to go. While waiting for my wife and daughter, I decided to take a quick look at facebook and something caught my eye. Much to my surprise a fellow blogger had just posted that they were there too. Now, being that he is much more eloquent than I, I will let blackthidot describe the fun of the crowds. Something tells me his version will be a little more elaborate and entertaining than mine.

We walked over to Magic Kingdom each of us equipped with our customized wrist band and looked forward to a day of fast pass plus, lunch reservations at the Crystal Palace and then eventually our first MNSSHP.

Once in the park, there is an ongoing tradition with me and my daughter that our first ride is always Pirates. Every trip has always officially started with a walk through that que and hopping into the boat for leisurely cruise through the world of Captain Jack Sparrow. But not this time, as we walked up, the cast members were informing all of the good folks that the ride was down. Hmmmmm, now where do we start. With cameras ready, we decided Haunted Mansion was our starting point.

After a few rounds of Haunted Mansion and Emily realizing that dark ride photography was not as easy as it looked, we were off to see if pirates was open.

After Pirates, we had fast pass plus for Space Mountain. As we walked up, my daughter asked what time did I think we would get and I made the attempt to explain that we didn’t have to get the paper and come back. Needless to say, she didn’t quite understand at first, but caught on pretty quick as we swiped the band and were on our way. I do have to admit that I like the fast pass plus concept. During this trip, as busy as it was, it made it a lot easier to get on or favorite rides without having to fight with the crowds to get the fast pass and wait for the return time.

After space, we wondered over to the new Fantasyland. All of were excited to see it, since the last time we were there the walls were still up and really didn’t see much of anything. My impression is that it is really a great addition. I think it will be really impressive when the mine train is done and you can really experience the whole addition. We had FP+ for Under the Sea, but were a little early. When I looked at the wait time, it didn’t seem to bad, so we decided to do stand by and if we liked it, we would just ride again at our appointed time. This allowed for Em and I to take pictures of the que.

After our late lunch we caught a few more rides and then it was time for the party. We headed back over to the Contemp to let Em change into her costume and for me to reload my camera bag with the stuff for the night. If my daughter keeps the camera bug, I guess I’m gonna have to look for a bag that can carry two tripods.

This was our first experience with the Halloween Party and we all though it was really fun. It really is a very unique experience to see the Magic Kingdom with the lights and effects for the party. We walked around taking in the sites and letting Em do some trick or treating and then headed up to main street for the party. We watched from the very end of the parade route and really had a great view. From the photography part the lighting was pretty bad but we still had a lot of fun.

Em was really excited to shoot Hallowishes and so was I. Since we had two tripod setups and really had not staked out a place to shoot from, I decided we would just follow the crowd as everyone moved down main street and set up right behind them. It wasn’t overly crowded, so we set up at a pretty good distance from the castle. Hallowishes is definitely worth the price of admission and we both got some pretty good shots.

Once the fireworks were done we grabbed all the gear and headed off to the side so I could tear everything down and repack it. This gave enough time for Emily to look at her pictures and get excited about how they looked. Once all packed up it was back it to ride a little more before walking back to the hotel.

Love the fireworks pictures! And even more so, I adore that you and your daughter both share interest in photography and had your tripods setup next to each other. That's so awesome.

Wonderful photos. Honestly, your fireworks photos are the best. Kinda making me think of taking my DSLR out of the closet and get back to that photography hobby I started a long time ago. Wonderful that you are sharing this with your daughter. Enjoy the experience and cherish the memories.

Thank you both. I think the best parts of the trip were when we both were shooting fireworks. We both shot Wishes the next night and I think I'll use her photos for that post.

Well, after a significant delay in day 2 of the report, I guess its time to get going again. I had decided that I had until Blackthidot finished his to finish this one since we were both there at the same time. Eventhough he was there for like a month and I was there for 3 days, it was logical to me that I had all of this time to finish it up. We left off after the Halloween party. The next day we were off to Animal Kingdom and this is where we started to figure out that the crowds were a little heavier than expected. We started the day at Everest and were able to ride it a few times with not horrible waits but it was obvious there were a lot of people in the park

Since my daughter’s patience level for lines cuts off at the 40 minute mark, (needless to say she was not overly impressed with any of this trip) we decided to head down to It’s a bug life and catch up on the insect world

It’s amazing how quickly the morning goes when the lines are nice and long. It was lunchtime and Flame Tree was calling us. I love the view from here.

After lunch we decided to head over to Epcot. We had FP+ for Test Track and eventhough we were early, we have never seen any part of Food and Wine.
12751010123_d8571a5dd6_c.jpg

Upon arriving at the gates, yup you guessed it, wall to wall people. Not knowing much about it, we kinda bumbled around and ran into Duffy.
12750876695_8113de01af_c.jpg

We walked down to Mexico and got Mom an adult beverage and Em some nachos. In the chaos of F&W it was refreshing to find a place where there was absolutely nobody around and we grabbed a bench to relax. I’m not much of a monorail photographer, but when it came by I figured I would see what I could get.

Once the nachos were finished, it was time to head over to Test Track. This was the first time seeing it since it was refurbished. It is kinda cool and we liked the new layout.
