The Meaning of wOOt!

So being a person who came of age during the days of DOS operating systems, and for whom the mandatory computer programming course during college was an introduction to BASIC, COBOL and so forth, I am not aware of so many things.

You who in moments of glee announce, "Such and so happened today! wOOt!" have perplexed me. I could guess from the context that this curious expression, perhaps word, was an expression of happy exhuberance, but I did once ask in a Chit Chat thread, "Just exactly what does 'wOOt' mean?"

No-one answered. Crickets chirped in empty meadows. The subject was changed to discussions of pantless people, people who stow things in pants or other vital topics of the day. And I went along in wonder as to the meaning of wOOt. . . until now.

Being a sharing person, I am only too pleased to share with all of you:

THE MEANING OF WOOT

Many will laugh and point and say, "of course, MKCP, we all knew this," but if one person's knowledge is expanded by this sharing, I deem my efforts worthwhile. Bringing the light of wisdom to all I encounter, THAT is my purpose! wOOt!

Yes, this definition page even includes interpretations of pronunciation, but I personally cannot verify any of the included are correct, and I am especially leery of the first sound and would recommend you skip it and go directly to numbers 2 through 7. ;)

wOOt on, wdwmagic!

woot i didn't know it went back to hackers and Dungeons and Dragons tabletop role-playing game.

Woot originated as a hacker term for root (or administrative) access to a computer. However, with the term as coincides with the gamer term, "w00t". hehe

Thanks. I know it is a silly topic, but isn't that what chit chat is here for? The people on that site who tape recorded themselves pronouncing wOOt is so funny to me - each one of them SOOO authoritative, and so different from the others!

I never said "woot" when I played Dungeons and Dragons. I usually said something along the lines of " - dead again. Why can't I roll more than a one or a two?"

I did Warhammer, does that make me less-hardcore? I never remember saying w00t. I remember thinking "why does nobody in Games Workshop use Deodorant?"

:D  :D  I love that word (or expression) "!" I heard it in "Bridget Jones' Diary" and thought it was hillarious. I know....We Americans are easily amused.....well, at least THIS one is. The older I get, the more I laugh. It's either laugh or cry.....so I laugh!
