Continuing with our Walt Disney World 1966 thread theme, the task that @MonorailRed and myself will have to face in Year Six is to design a Walt Disney World International Airport.

When Walt Disney revealed his master plan for Walt Disney World, the airport was one of the coolest aspects, and (while he didn't make an unbreakable vow for it;)), it is our task to design the airport for the Walt Disney World 1966 project!

Boardwalk.jpg

Disney's Boardwalk Resort is a Deluxe Resort at Walt Disney World, and has a variety of restaurant options for their guests to dine at, from Flying Fish Cafe to the ESPN Club. However one location in particular, Trattoria al Forno, has changed hands many times over the last few years, from Cat Cora, to formally Spoodles, and so on.

This ever-changing location will be home to Disney World's newest signature dining experience, "The Walk", which will hopefully remain for decades to come. Themed to an exclusive style "club" on the 1920s Atlantic City Boardwalk, the restaurant will be decorated in dark woods, giving off a intimate and classy atmosphere. The restaurant's menu will include a variety of everything, however they will specialize gourmet beef tenderloin, a signature "Walk" dish. With the closed setting, fireplaces situated in different locations, and low light ambiance, The Walk will be the Boardwalk Inn's 2nd signature dining location (next to Flying Fish), paralleling Disney's Grand Floridian Resort and Spa with the multiple signature dining experiences.

The Starlight Gala Restaurant

Welcome to the all new five star dining experience at Disney's Hollywood Studios...

The Starlight Gala Restaurant will be the park's first signature dining restaurant, and will transport guests back to the days of lavish Hollywood premiere after parties. With a similar dress code and "elegance level" to Tiffin's at Disney's Animal Kingdom, The Starlight Gala will be the first restaurant in the theme park industry to have separate entrances and dining rooms for in-park and non-park guests. That way, it makes the restaurant accessible to those looking for a nice, romantic dinner or a filling meal after a day at the park. The two entrances will lead to separate dining rooms, with both sections sharing a large kitchen.

The restaurant will be located along the path currently leading to Tower of Terror and its exit/gift shop. The path will be extended to the restaurant. In addition, a path from the park entrance/boat dock will lead to the other entrance. Both dining rooms will offer a wonderful view of the river.

The theming of the restaurant will take diners back into the days of the 1920's and 1930's, in the heyday of Hollywood. In addition, the menu of the restaurant will feature a wide variety of sea foods, meats, vegetarian options and more.

This will be somewhat shorter than I intended so if @MonorailRed comes at this guns blazing as I'm sure she will, I shall concede the loss:p

Walt Disney World International Airport (WIA)

Opening in 1966 along with the rest of the Walt Disney World Resort in this new timeline, the Walt Disney World International Airport will take influence from the 60s space race and pursuit of the moon with a spaceport, futuristic theme. Walt Disney had said that this would be an airport of the future, and its architectural design and modelings will be just that.

Since the Magic Kingdom has not opened yet in this timeline, and Space Mountain was never invented, Walt took an idea he had for a "space rocket" attraction and used that as the basis for the airport. An airport that felt like you were entering another "world" - Disney World. Stepping out of reality and into the future.

Airport Map
newark-airport-map.jpg

The Airport itself will be as expansive of some of the most heavily traveled airports in the country. Much like Newark International Airport, it will have connections to all sorts of outbound areas, and truly be the central hub of WDW travel. Connecting Monorails, cars, taxis, and more for quick and easy access to other areas of the resort.

Arrivals Timeline
latest

Many guests will travel from their homes to WDW, so the experience upon landing will have to be inviting while at the same time an experience in and of itself.

The tower of the airport in the center of the layout will be reminiscent of the Space Mountain facade in the Magic Kingdom. With white accents and a beacon of futuristic travel, this will be the icon of WIA. It will be the sign for guests flying into Walt Disney World that they have finally arrived.

For guests traveling to WDW, after disembarking they will enter the main lobby concourse of the airport.
first-of-its-kind-airport-in-the-world.jpg

The main concourse will be decked out in a very contemporary design. It is here where guests eager to go to start their vacation can quickly head towards the monorail pick up (we'll come back to the lobby for the departures timeline descriptions)

When traveling to the monorail pick up after disembarking, guests will travel through a vortex tunnel akin to the scene in the attraction (and echoing Chicago O'Hare's Rainbow Tunnel upon exiting)

Guests luggage who are staying on property will be taken to their rooms much like the Magical Express of today. For guests coming into WDW for Epcot, or who live in the city, they can proceed towards the luggage department.
maxresdefault.jpg

After picking up your luggage you can travel to the monorail that will take you to 4 major stops: the parking lot/WDW entrance of the airport, the industrial park, Epcot, and the Resort area.

These monorails travel at speeds of up to 45 mph and are state of the art for the time period that we are in. The round trip time from airport to the resort will take around 20 minutes.

Departures Timeline
When arriving at WIA for your departure from Walt Disney World, your final glimpse into the world will be in the main concourse lobby waiting for your flight. Here there will be many small places to eat, shop, and dine with a distinct "Disney" and Floridian flare to them.
8cdbda9e4ac00982b8ea42e89e9b9673.jpg

Along with the futuristic, designs, there will be plant foliage around the main concourse area, as well as some waterfall areas and D-zones to relax before the flight.

The airport itself should be a gateway between the real world and Disney World. Providing a happy medium and transition from reality to fantasy. Without overdoing the decor and design and throwing Disney in your face, this will be an easier transition, but still feel as if you're in another "world: so to speak. One in the future and one inspired by the space and futuristic travel interest of the 60s.

Eventually over time, the airport will have to undergo renovations, but we will leave that to the 1966 thread.

Also, just for @Voxel...in the airport, there will be a plethora of...runways:geek:

Despite the Magic Kingdom's multitude of dining experiences, it has never quite had a Club-33 style restaurant. That changes now.

Walt's is a pass-holder exclusive five-star restaurant, dedicated to the man who started it all. Pass-holders will dine in a calm atmosphere lit by dim ceiling lamps. The walls are coated with sketch-work of Walt Disney's finest cartoon creations, including Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and Mickey Mouse. The main courses include a variety of pork, seafood, and a large variety of wines.

A new five star restaurant is pulling into the station right next to the transportation and ticket center. "The Locomotive" is themed to an early 19th century steam train with guests eating in the dining cars and dining on delicious foods and wines inspired by European delicacies. Wait staff will wear time period specific attire and help guests feel as if they have gone back to the time as railroads as king. By adding another restaurant to the Magic Kingdom and resort monorail loop, WDW guests have another dining option at their disposal. Guests can use two dining credits if using the meal plan.

Caver's Motto - A Hufflepuff Submission

Located on the Mysterious Island at Tokyo Sea, a new restaurant has opened up, guaranteed to be a five star dining experience. Boarding on the "sea", Caver's Motto offers spectacular sea-side dining that perfectly blends into the rock work already in the area.

Specializing in surf n turf with a kick, this little hideaway is perfect for the adventurous explorer eager to escape from the hustle and bustle of the crowd. Limited seating helps keep this area as intimate as possible, and even if the water side seats are unavailable, there are several cozy tables located inside, and even a bar that offers an array of spirits.

In Caver's Motto, the wait staff will tell you: "Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints, kill nothing but time", and relaxing in this unique restaurant, guests will certainly spend a lot of time admiring the cave rock, gazing at hanging stalactites and leaving with nothing but pictures, full stomachs, and a memorial dining experience.
