After hearing people rave about the creme brulee at the food and wine festival french cart I decided to try it out.

I have to say I was extremely surprised. I think the only reason it is popular is because more sophisticated tastes have not had jello pudding. That's all it tastes like and really all it was.... jello pudding burnt on the top.

Too funny. Really most of Disney food is bland but you make your mind to believe it is the best you have ever had. Mostly because someone is serving you and some that you didn't have to pay for it if you have free dining and I bet most of their food is bought in bulk from a supplier to all restaurants and they just tweek or burn it in your case to change it up.

We have tried the Creme Brulee all over in WDW including Fulton at DTD and are not impressed at all. I would rather have the Jello Pudding with some fresh cool whip on top. This is just a way over hyped item. If you want to try something really good, have a crepe at the stand in france made with stawberry preserves or a waffle in Norway. Now that's something to brag about.

Pretty funny...and a good thing to know! :p

I tend to want to try all the desserts at the World, and now I know one I don't have to bother with!

Creme brulee is a hot item right now. Everyone seems to love it, no matter where you get it, or how good (or bad) it is.

I find most of the ones that I have are too sweet and "pudding-y" as opposed to more of a custard. So much of it is made at 10:00 AM and kept in the walk in. When orderd, it gets a sprinkle of sugar, a ride in the salamader, and then out to the table, where it arrives half melted, half frozen, and not all that great.

It's not something that is limited to WDW. It seems every other place serves a creme brulee, and people go ga-ga over it.

I am glad that I did not wait in the long line at the cart in France then. The Napoleon in the pastry shop was probably better anyway.:)

I completely agree! We had a pretty bad meal at San Angel, neither of us complained - pretended it was good (I mean it was kind of edible right?) but it was free so who cares what the heck it tastes like!

I do have to say we had that creme brule, and although it wasn't the best I've ever had, I would go back and have it again! Another one bites the dust :ROFLOL:

The Pastry Shop in France is a MUST stop! My wife and I have so much fun having something from there each time we go and share!

it was the "Festival" version referred to

I'm pretty sure the OP was referring to the creme brûlée that was available at the Paris Food & Wine Festival booth (and not at Les Chefs de France) - I would agree that the Festival booth version was not very impressive.

(and as for where the 'raves' were coming from, it did have a decent ranking in the AllEars Festival Food Booth rankings - with 73% ranking it a "Winner").

I didn't make it down to the F&W Fest this year, so I can't comment on French booth's offering, but...

I love creme brulee. If it is on the menu, I'll have to order it. And yet, when I do get it, I am almost never happy with it. It drives my girlfriend nuts. She'll ask me how it is, and I'll respond with "meh, not very good." Ordering it for me always seems to be an exercise in disappointment.

But those few times it is done right, it is heavenly.

I don't like when chef's try to jazz it up either by adding things to it. I didn't even like Jiko's pistachio creme brulee with a chocolate-layered bottom, and normally for me, chocolate improves anything.

So it sounds like I avoided another disappointment by not getting one of these mass-produced ones sold at the F&W.

We tried it... and hated it too. The top wasn't even crunchy! There was no satisfying hard caramel to tap your spoon on. Just some partially melted sugar, and some loose sugar grains. Blech.

On the other hand, we LOVED the creme brulee at Wolfgang Puck Express in DTD. I was skeptical, because, come on... alluminum pie pans? But there were vanilla seeds plainly visable and everything in the custard. Much better... and better on the wallet than the ones in France!

Was it like a fancy milk chocolate pudding with a crispy sweet top? Yes.

Did I love it anyway? Yes. :slurp:

Guess I have simple tastes.

I had the milk chocolate creme brulee at the Food and Wine last year and this year. Is it glorified chocolate pudding? Yea. But I still think it is delicious. Everytime I have had it, the sugar on top is carmelized and has a good crack to it. The "creme" is very creamy and not overly chocolate-y, which is probably why I like it bc i am more vanilla than chocolate.

It is fancy pudding, but it is still very tasty :)
