Nobody remembers the other time Disney did Oz?

In fact, at Eurodisney...

I knew it. Where in the world is it going to go? The Circle D Ranch area? I know you can't answer me, so I have no clue why I'm asking.

Professor Marvel's, aka the Wizard of Oz's, circus show thingy in the Kansas part of the movie would fit in at the Thunder Ranch BBQ area, and they used this area for a Pirate movie premiere, so I bet they put in a temporary display to help promote the film. I bet this is what is being discussed, though they also have the Lone Ranger stuff to promote as well. I don't think they'll put in a Wizard of Oz attraction in Disneyland, especially in Frontierland, considering that Oz has nothing to do with the Frontier. Though, obviously, the queue could be Professor Marvel magic show and sometime during the ride you are transported to Oz via tornado . . . still on parks maps it would have to be listed as a Wizard of Oz ride in Frontierland, for guest reference.

And also considering that the Oz film will probably only break even . . . Lone Ranger looks like it will be the tentpole next year, not Disney's Oz.

I really loved that movie when I was little. It pulls a lot of it's story from my favorite Oz book (Osma of Oz). It's certainly not the greatest movie Disney ever created but still enjoyable. That's really neat they have that at EuroDisney. I take it that it's just decoration and not really tied to anything? What little characters are at the fron of the castle? I can't tell from the picture. :(

What if they were to create a new land, based on Oz? Not just an attraction. Obviously Oz doesn't fit the Frontier/Western theme but if created a land based on the film then it wouldn't really matter where it would go. I'm still kinda iffy on Lone Ranger but at the same time, I wouldn't be surprised if we got either.

This is what I was thinking too. A seperate "Land of Oz" would make a nice bridge between Frontierland (Kansas) and Fantasyland (Oz). Plus the locations in the books/movies provide many varied backdrops for attractions, shops and eateries.

And yes, there was that other Disney Oz movie. At least with the new movie being made there's hope for a Blu-ray re-release tie-in of that.

Exactly, and I'm guessing it's going to be a land because the rumors always stated the Land of Oz. Not just an attraction based on the movie.

I tried to watch that version of Oz but it was a little too creepy and scary for me.

I was never a fan of the original wizard of oz as a kid but really liked return to oz. I can't wait to see this new movie. I love Franco especially and the rest of the cast should be okay.

As far as a oz land in Disney- please, NO.

I remember seeing "Return to Oz". One of the reasons why it was such a huge flop for Disney was that so many people were preparing themselves for a sequel to the 1939 musical only to find that it was closer to the Oz books which were a bit darker in tone.

Since the original film has become a huge part of our pop culture, most of the audience was shocked to learn that there was an entire series of books written about the Land of Oz that had little to nothing to do with the movie that they had grown up with. Even then, people weren't reading as much as they used to.

Since this new "Oz" is a prequel, it stands a better chance since it probably won't attempt to re-introduce characters like Dorothy and the Scarecrow. Whether or not it will inspire a theme park attraction (as always) depends on what kind of cash it produces.

Anyone else notice the house getting caught up in the tornado with the balloon? Guessing the story of The wizard and Dorothy happen simultaneously?

No, this is a prequel happening way before Dorothy comes in. This movie is going to be about how the wizard comes to Oz and becomes the wizard. That house was probably just a little shout out to the original.

Some things from movies are both popular/beloved by fans, and work great in theme parks. The best example would be Hogsmeade at IOA.

I haven't seen much of Oz's buildings from the trailer, what we have is rural Kansas and Avatar like landscapes, a "porcelain village with a living porcelain doll" that looks vaguely like the munchins village from the original, and Emerald City seen in the background.

Would they build a small part of the Emerald city?

The Wicked Witch of the West castle?

Munchins' Village?

I don't know if Disney is hoping for a franchise here, but if the film is mostly forgotten in four years, will people recognize the stuff specific to the Disney film which isn't in the original? Look at the Return to Oz display in Paris Disneyland's Storybook Canal Boat ride, I'm pretty sure 99% of guests to Disneyland Paris are more familiar with the original film, and Disney is still pushing their version which sort of bombed.

I just don't see Oz the Great and Powerful have the sort of popularity where a land could be based on the film, maybe a generalized Oz land which depicts things which are familiar with the original film and Wicked and the third film being made by WB.

The thing is that the new land would require a dark ride, I guess, and if they used characters from the Disney film, guests wouldn't get why they aren't the same as the originals or as the ones which will be depicted in the upcoming Wicked film. The Great Movie Ride in Orlando specifically uses the classic film which everybody recognizes, if they used just their Return to Oz characters from 1985 guests would be scratching their heads.

This is what I was thinking. Or maybe use the book illustrations as a source for character design? So long as key elements are made recognizeable I think you can get away with not exactly copying one version or another.

Even in the SBL display you can still make out who is who.

I loathe the original movie. Liked the play Wicked. Would be discouraged if if this made a bigger presence in the parks.

For my part, I loved the original movie, and as for Wicked...well, I've never seen the stage show, but after reading the first few pages of the book, I heaved it into the trash... :D

Is this "Oz" movie going to be canon with the original film or with "wicked?" Or is it sort of a "what if" like "Wicked" was to the film? (Or was "wicked" canon? Lol)

I can assure you that "Wicked", in NO way, shape or form, is canon. In my opinion, "Wicked" was a case of what happens when a created work goes out of copyright. Gregory McGuire took a children's classic and warped it, because he could, and unfortunately a lot of people go for that sort of thing. :p Makes me nervous about what would happen if Mickey Mouse ever goes out of copyright... :O

The book is so completely different from the Broadway show. It has some of the underlying plot, but only some, but they changed so many elements...and I'm saying that in a praising way. All the changes they made were, IMO, definitely the right choice. I love the Broadway show but I didn't like the book at all. Unlike you, I managed to get all the way through it but it felt like a chore reading it. I probably should have thrown it away but I'm stubborn ;) If you ever have the opportunity to see the show, I'd really encourage it. Again, it's really radically different from the book.

And thanks for the pic Bairstow!

Oz is being considered for DL as a new mini-land, but much will depend on the box office ... and how it compares with another tentpole that is much more likely (from industry observers) to have franchise written all over it.

But this has nothing to do with WDW. Enjoy all the new timeshares and wait and hope for Avatarland and then 2021 because you KNOW Disney just has to do something then, right?
